I’ve been playing professionally for over 35 years now and I have always preferred to buy used guitars. And for some unknown reason, I have a price limit of $1000 in my mind so good job buddy, This is a great find!
I think the neck sounded thick and lush, and articulate. One of the best I’ve heard recently. The lipsticks overall, really produce a beautiful clean. Very nice sounding.
I've played quite a few of these. They are really good and stable guitars. No dead spots at the neck, the weather doesn't really affect them, they sustain their notes nicely, the sound has really buttery mids and they are really solid. Back in the day they had only vintage styled setups, but nowdays you can have a heavier setup with Emg's as well. The only thing what has kept me away from them is the fact I hate carved tops. If they had a f.e. RG-like body, that would be a instant buy. They also sell their necks, but I'm no luther enough to equip my Ibanez with one.
Thanks Phil for bringing these to light . . . did my research and couldn't stop analysing the features over and over in my head - so got one coming home ... SD Sh-14 / 5 and Jazz in White and Gold 😁 [good news is I will never take the depreciation hit, cuz I always buy to Keep !!!]
Phil, I really appreciate - enjoy - how well your audio setup is so that your electric-guitar playing sounds PERFECT - just outta the box. Because of your mics, their placement, etc. Thanks for going that.
I had questions about the neck's material, and the nut, too, all of which are answered on the vendor's website. Phil, I appreciate your comment about the likely need to replace the cable-jack with that same product. Not my favorite answer but I'd hate to waste time scrounging my bin and then discovered, 'I'm wasting my time - git the real thang."
Wow! I guess you really do learn something new everyday - never heard of that brand. Not to keen on the "marble/quartz" body look though. Hey Phil, I see you really like that Synergy amp since it's been featured quite a bit lately on your channel. Do you think its possible to see the Supro Amp Head featured sometime on guitar of the day? Enjoy your channel immensely and look forward to the Friday Pod Casts! Chris
Seems like a really great guitar. As someone who has never been much of a strat guy.... I like this Flaxwood a lot! One of these could fill in my "Stratless" collection! Thanks Phil!
Thanks for bringing this wonderful instrument into the light. The blues sound that eminate from it are lovely! Of course, now that you have shared it with the world the prices for a used one iwill start going up.
I’d love to see a video demonstrating caliper measurements on a variety of popular acoustic and electric guitars. Stuff like the string spacing, nut and saddle dimensions, depths for cavities, etc. Same about radius and other gauges. It’s difficult to find out where to take each measurement. I also have trouble seeing if my neck is straight and knowing how to use one of those blue music nomad tri-tools for nearly every neck situation because I often see light passing through the gauge even when I think the neck is straight - and I don’t know if it’s where I’m placing it, whether it might happen with some necks with a more curved radius, etc. I don’t know if there’s a standardized rule of thumb of measuring guitars as to where/how to place these gauges, and whether these rules vary depending on each guitar model/specs, but it would be nice to have a video guide on RUclips or photo guide on a website to follow for a variety of measurements and measurement gauges. Thanks, Phil!
I found a builder called "Haywire" and they make an improved Fender classic designs and retail new for over $2,000 but are up on their reverb store for like $800. Made in USA and very cool options. They had an X-light Strat that had an advertised weight of 5.5 pounds, Strandberg weight.
Thanks doing this review. I have seen a version or two of guitars from this company but could never figure out the details. Felt great, look good but I didn’t know much about the brand or quality. So I used to skip trying it out. Now I know better.
I have had 2. My latest is outfitted with Liquifire and Crunch Lab pickups and it screams. Amazon craftsmanship that reminds me of Aristides instruments.
I had a Flaxwood once. It was a beautiful Leikki-or something like it. A NAMM prototype, one of a kind, with double P90s, a pearl white finish, and gold hardware. Semi-hollow. Similar models were going for €3500, and I thought I was getting a steal at €2350 used. Sadly, I never bonded with the guitar. It felt plasticky-stiff and brittle. But it played great, the setup was excellent, and the heel joint was the best I've seen outside of a neck-through. I thought I’d keep it for a long time, just for its looks and rarity. But then life happened, and I had to sell it. Those guitars are tough to move. Liquidity? Nonexistent. I was really hesitant to put it on the market, and it took three months to sell. None of the shops in my country would buy it or take it on consignment. Time went on, and I needed to sell some stuff. I finally let it go for €1000. That's 15-year-old Bentley/Maserati level depreciation for a pristine, collectors-grade guitar. I’ve had more expensive guitars, both before and after the Flaxwood, but never with such a high ownership cost. Even when buying “for a lifetime,” I should’ve considered resale value. Lesson learned. tl;dr: These guitars are slow to sell. If you find one you like and it’s been on the market for a while, make an offer. Lowball it.
I've had a Flaxwood with P90s and the Schaller vibrato for a few years. The neck is great, and it's super-comfortable. Once it's set up, the neck doesn't budge. The only downside is that you have to use 10s - I tried 9s and the vibrato leaned back quite a lot, and removing one spring was overkill. I assume if you tried 11s you'd also have trouble keeping it level. Great gigging guitar because of the stability from season to season. FWIW, the folks at Flaxwood are super-nice if you have questions.
Looks like a great guitar. The logo design is a bit unfortunate as the stylized "f" in the midst of block text, at first glance, looks an awful lot like the First Act logo.
Some time ago i was looking at their eplacement necks as they seem great value, i didn't go through because they pre-drill the holes with threaded nut inserts and provide matching machine screws so in the likelihood that there's a mismatch between your guitar pocket and the neck you are literally screwed.
Interesting guitar. It's body is made with natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastic through a patented injection molding process. I love that Schaller Tremolo too. I'd replace the volume & tone knobs, but otherwise, not bad, not bad at all.
I think they should mount the pickups from the rear. I love my Parker deluxe and classic because, although not mounted from the rear, the aesthetic is the same.
I kinda want to know more about the bridge. Do you have any videos on that particular tremelo? I have a couple of projects where that might be the perfect solution.
For posterity, 4 hours after this video was posted, the cheapest Flaxwood on Reverb is $1k, most around $1500. We'll see how this changes after this video is out for a bit lol.
Where can I find those Schaller 4201 tremolos showcased on these guitars? I'm dying to put one on my SG, but I can't find one anywhere. Do I have to go to Germany?
@Phil: are those trem springs easy to find/replace? I've never seen guitar trem springs that short. And just for kicks, you should do a viewer blind sound test of this guitar and a PRS - you know, cuz this one ain't got no tonewoods. :P I am sure that would be revealing and interesting content as this thing sounds pretty sweet. This one is more compelling and reasonably priced than say Aristedes full composite axes.
I’ve been playing professionally for over 35 years now and I have always preferred to buy used guitars. And for some unknown reason, I have a price limit of $1000 in my mind so good job buddy, This is a great find!
Yah im exactly the same… i go up
To about $1,800 but no more… good job!
Love the hollowbody design and access to all of the electronics, etc.
That guitar sounds beautiful. The tones are great! Definitely a keeper.
Man, that was a fantastic bridge sound! Neck was super good, but neck was nicely surprising. Thank you, Phil.
Never heard of this brand before. Good find. Thanks for that.
Well those pups sound awesome, mix P90 and Strat single but with unique tone, and the Flaxwood looks sweet! These folks deserve the exposure.
Man, that's a guitar techs dream!
These are awesome guitars! I found a used one years ago. Very light, plays great and sounds incredible!
I think the neck sounded thick and lush, and articulate. One of the best I’ve heard recently. The lipsticks overall, really produce a beautiful clean. Very nice sounding.
Like it! Thick single coil tone, unusual but cool
That looks and sounds great. There's one at Guitar Center for $899. Get it while you can. I'm not in the market rn or I'd have it.
Have been watching these for a few years. Felt like I was the only one. LOL. Always seemed like a real value used.
Thank you for bringing out this great Finnish innovation and craftmanship. We have a lot of other great instrument makers here too.
I've been a fan of these for a decade, there are loads of model options, superb guitars.
I love your final words on this guitar, Phil

I've heard of them. Looking forward to watching the rest of this video.

Chris
Just checked reverb, none of these under $1k. (Video came out 40 minutes ago)
Phil, the Josh Scott of guitars… 😊
Guitar Center has one for $899.
We play guitar like the Bass Players we are. Sounds Great !
Thanks for posting.
Seems like a really great guitar. As someone who has never been much of a strat guy.... I like this Flaxwood a lot! One of these could fill in my "Stratless" collection! Thanks Phil!

Beautiful guitar. I like everything about it. Congratulations.
Wow what a beautiful guitar. Reminds me more of a Majesty. Especially the handshake.
Just when you think you've seen everything on guitars then you bring out this nice but very different guitar.
That's a pretty clean sound.Strat players should love that thing.
That's what I thought right from the start It's an unique one
This makes me want to be a collector, but I have too many guitars already! But wow… Phil! NOBODY in the world does these evaluations better.
Hi Guitar 🎸 Guy nice video 📹 and workmanship
The whole rig has a nice growl to it!!

Thanks, Phil!
I've always found that using a stew Mac neck shim for bolt on necks is either placebo or worth the experiment
I’ve always liked the oddballs! Looks like a well crafted guitar, with some nice unique features! ❤
The sound is amazing and unique. Love it!
Great vid Phil...appreciate ya!
Looks and sounds cool - great find
Very cool! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for videos like this, Phil
Waooo the clean sound of that guitar is amazing ♥️♥️♥️♥️
LOVE the color!! Will I get one, no. But, I ALWAYS enjoy watching the deep dives, VERY interesting and fascinating indeed.
nice work! hi from chicago!
My old bass player always wondered why guitar players didn't demand blend knobs. Honestly it makes sense in single coil guitars for sure.
These guitars are now going to skyrocket in price.
Very interesting!! Sounds great! And yeah, you can make it rock!
Very nice I like it and it's green😊

So a normal used price for a 2k guitar?
Always loved the look of this things!
Hi Phil, nice video! It can be that the switch is Schaller Megaswitch.
Thanks doing this review. I have seen a version or two of guitars from this company but could never figure out the details. Felt great, look good but I didn’t know much about the brand or quality. So I used to skip trying it out. Now I know better.
It reminds me of a Danelectro with the lipstick p/u's and unusual materials. WOW what look though!
I have had 2. My latest is outfitted with Liquifire and Crunch Lab pickups and it screams. Amazon craftsmanship that reminds me of Aristides instruments.
This thing kinda reminds me of my Brian Moore. Really cool guitar for sure
Almost bought one of these a few years back. The do play pretty well.
Heard it on authority that this is a unique guitar.
Sweet sound.
I love the color! 💚🖤💚
And in the U.S. we call "Flax" wood "Pergo" flooring. but it is tough, I must say.
O ya!?

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter plays one of these rockers... ¡¥¡
Great Deals can be found if you look past the Most Popular....... Very Nice.
Wow! What a pertifull guitar!
I looked at these a couple weeks ago they were for the most part under a grand, not now
Kinda digging it sounds good too
Almost sounds to me like a Flaxwood would sound better for a bass guitar, What do you think Phil? Do they make Basses?
The most underrated guitar!
Sounds really good!

These guitars will go great with my Genelec studio monitors (made in Finland). Now I gotta convince the wife
This is a neat guitar!
Looks like a great guitar. The logo design is a bit unfortunate as the stylized "f" in the midst of block text, at first glance, looks an awful lot like the First Act logo.
Ohh no….
They're probably not familiar with that brand.
@@Riverking1 I'd never hear of it until I watched the video. I will be on the lookout for it in local shops now.
How well did the trem stay in tune? It reminds me of the Berlin pro guitar. I love the colour.
Congratulations, I always wanted a Flaxwood, never even played one, never held one - heck never even seen one in person!.
Sweet sound, cool look
Some time ago i was looking at their eplacement necks as they seem great value, i didn't go through because they pre-drill the holes with threaded nut inserts and provide matching machine screws so in the likelihood that there's a mismatch between your guitar pocket and the neck you are literally screwed.

Awesome!
You should hunt down a KRITZ GUITAR. Those were epic!
I think they should mount the pickups from the rear. I love my Parker deluxe and classic because, although not mounted from the rear, the aesthetic is the same.
I bought a p90 version with the f hole about a year ago from GC for under 600 bucks. They didn't know what they had.
Well, I don’t see any on eBay. And the ones on Reverb are over a grand.
Guitar Center. $899.
Cool-thank you.
The modern equivalent of a mid 90's Carvin.
wow, That's Fender Mustang weight. Cool.
I kinda want to know more about the bridge. Do you have any videos on that particular tremelo? I have a couple of projects where that might be the perfect solution.
check to see if the switch toggles in addition to sliding. You might have a freeway switch. The PCB looks vaguely like what I put in my tele
Hey Phil, what about an Edwards next?
Very cool!
It has the nice “plingy” almost banjo-like tone, much like the REVO Surfmaster Thinline Twin- just something different from a Tele, Firebird or PRS.
you COULD pick them up for a fraction of they go for new.... THANX PHIL!! (half kidding.. we now how these things end up)
For posterity, 4 hours after this video was posted, the cheapest Flaxwood on Reverb is $1k, most around $1500. We'll see how this changes after this video is out for a bit lol.
can't help but think with the lipsticks, a series/parallel switch for positions 2 and 4 to get that dano sound...
Where can I find those Schaller 4201 tremolos showcased on these guitars? I'm dying to put one on my SG, but I can't find one anywhere. Do I have to go to Germany?
Lol, no. You don't have to go to Germany.
If you look for "Schaller 4201 Retrofit" you'll find them.
@Phil: are those trem springs easy to find/replace? I've never seen guitar trem springs that short. Pricing is the Oden God of these market followers. Pat Traverse sang, “It Makes No Difference”. He started out on a used Melody Maker.
I've gotten to play one before. Excellent guitars. Shame the only dealer of them in my city was kind of an odd fellow... in an unpleasant way.
I remember those
The title to this video sounds like a sales pitch
That’s a Schaller switch Phil.
Calm yourselves kids, the cheapest on Reverb is still over $1200 USD plus delivery from Slovakia.
Looks like Italian Marble!!! ¡¥¡
