@@TabletopTime If you can do what you love, go as far as it'll take you. I mean, what else are ya gonna do with all those old, unpainted, possibly scratch built w/ love models. So much history, so much table, a lot of time
Tank tracks are often black because they have rubber pads on them to protect road surfaces from metal tracks. But if you look at this tank you can see the links, so it seems unlikely that they have rubber pads on. Also, I doubt anyone in the 40k universe is worrying about what their tanks are doing to roads.
Not true at all, they are mostly black/dark reddish brown because they are made mostly of blacksteel (steel which is not post treated). Sadly that stuff starts rusting immediatly after coming in contact with water what then turns them into a dark reddish brown. Rubber pads are mostly used for driving on roads in peacetime and are not meant for going into battle. I paint my tracks a very very dark brown with some rusty and dusty spots. After that, smear the tracks mit some dark metal pigments on the edges and high points to immitate some wear and tear from hard surfaces.
Well done kiddo! I love hearing more about the various histories, from the lore to the periodicals to the history of the franchise itself. I think the tank looks great, and I would love to see your birthday treasure especially if you demonstrate more non-metallic metal techniques! Today my non-artistic, non-gaming husband discovered the rather gruesome names of model paints and is questioning my sanity anew, which I always find deeply satisfying, but when I told him that’s what Dave at Tabletop Time uses he decided it can’t be all bad- because no one with your beautiful hair could be truly evil! Have fun at Pax, kiddo, and keep ‘em rollin’.
I actually have a similar weathering and battle damage philosophy. To me they're space marines, they maintain their gear very well (mostly) and any damage is from the environment around them like paint being stripped from sand or falling chunks of masonry. Just nice to see something other than the traditional rust effects
Some thoughts on the HH2.0 sabre in game: don't sleep on the autocannon. The combination of sunder, rending 5+ and twin linked means that it is actually pretty reliable for taking down medium armor in conjunction with some sabre missiles. Don't forget that the high movement of the sabre can be used to get side armor shots more easily than, say, a predator. That loadout is made very strong in Iron Warriors. The volkite saker is also a strong choice because you can maximize the reaction potential for return fire since it is s6 and therefore a defensive weapon. Lastly, the neutron blaster is also concussive 3, which can absolutely cripple the weapon skill of anything you mught want to charge that turn, if the shot goes through. I think every loadout has a role to play.
Painting your army on work time and making good content . Legend mate. Its now a matter of principle JAZZA that this boy gets to finish his army in "work" so he can show all of us his methods. Doing it at home would be a waste of content
The Sabre was what you made with the parts left over from the original Spartan, fact fans. Also, the main hull is a combination of Land Raider parts, and plasticard .
Oh wow, that kit bashed Star Wars Scoutwalker... I remember seeing that in a cabinet in the Games Workshop in Leeds about 30 (Yikes!) years ago, possibly more.
It is kit bashed with the Zoid: Red Scavenger (I used to be a massive Zoids nut) with what looks like another Zoid: Gore Lord Protector's shoulder cannon
@@kharnifex yes, I think that was the original Japanese name as they renamed all the zoids for the UK market and gave them a different back story and made them either red or blue
Actually, the idea of the Sabre Tank Destroyer appeals to me because it is really a purpose-made tank destroyer, rather than a Laser Vindicator-style retrofit. Furthermore, it is an interesting combination of old (cannon-based) and new (missile-based) tank destroyer concepts.
You're absolutely right. I guess in 1989, you could see Moorcock's Chaos allied to Tolkien's Orcs; but today, the forces from the Eye of Terror still loathe filthy Xenos. The paint scheme looks great. The Sabre turned out very well.
Purple and Green Alpha Legion? The classic super-villain colour scheme. The black gloves give Dave's painting shots something of a Giallo killer atmosphere. Sinister.
always love to see more Heresy content! You're not wrong, the sabre is in a weird spot. That said, it is a cheap way to fill up some fast attack slots. I find that squadroned works best for volkite or autocannon loadouts to just bully whatever you shoot them at, whereas the neutron laser is good on single sabres to harass enemy armor. I like the autocannon; losing a strength does kind of suck, but it more than makes up for it with the Rending (5+) and Sunder, giving you a decent chance of still at least glancing even heavy armor (that often is not going to be able to Return Fire react with anything that can hurt it!) I have also had good success harassing dreadnoughts with the autocannons, but that could also just be my dice haha. My volkite needs are also met elsewhere in the force, otherwise I would likely consider them more heavily; volkite is never a bad option and is generally the coolest one! Well done on the scheme as well! You are a madman for painting a tank in NMM but you pulled it off in an efficacious way. Looking forward to seeing more!
As a night lords player I use Javelin squads more often but I was thinking of adding sabers but I lack anti tank so for fast attack it’s hard to pass up the lascannon javelin.
I am so glad i watched this. The screen at 5:12 taught me a valuable lesson. Love this man, amazing paint job and very engaging to watch, I usually find myself bored watching painting videos, but you got me paying attention the whole time
I absolutely agree with making the tracks black. I noticed when painting my Lord of Skulls that 40k makes most treads metallic, but every time I've seen treads I remember them being black
Looks amazing Dave and for the tracks it is painted black are a tan are some color for camo reasons the painted does get stretched with rough terrains cause they are metal with a huge pin so the chip painted would normally be the edges that hits the ground the sides won't get scratched cause with turning its just one tread going back and one going forward also the flat won't get scratch it does but does sometimes
I wish someone would make a 40K size 3D model of that sweet Space Marine Lander you showed in the previous video. Would make for a cool piece of terrain.
I’d love to see you go through the ages, each edition, version, etc, various models or stories from each edition, plus painting up something fun. At the end you would have maybe a squad or even an army with different models from different eras! Plus you can go deep on the stories from that time period, I don’t know the specific rulings or even if this is accurate, but like the 2nd edition Chaplain being flung from a rhino, taking a huge amount of damage and activating a specific piece of war gear that blinded large portions of the enemy army.

Yeah, but to make the Sabre, you need a Land Raider and a Rhino (which nets you a Spartan and a Sabre). It was still a way to get you to purchase more kits, and didn't require GW to design, produce or distribute anything. Ditto for the original Whirlwind and Vindicator.
As a former Tanker the only time tank track is black, is when it is brand new. After a couple of days in the field it is polished steel and covered in soil. Once back in garrison it rusts up.
So thought i would throw in my thoughts on the sabre tank. Played a few games so far with them and the neutron blaster with multi melta combo is devastating against armour, Movement 16 and a fast vehicle so can should that ordnance cannon without penalty. It's weapon range seems to be 24 inches unless you rock the volkite but with a 16 inch movement means it will pretty much catch anything it wants to. The autocannons are better than they initially look like on paper as they have rending as well (if memory serves correctly) so there is a chance they can still do some damage to the bigger tanks in the game. Either way they are cool little tanks and for the points cost they are amazing, kinda wish they were in plastic
To nerd abot nerd things: the dark angels lore bit about picking off the ork caravan is THE german tankambush tactic from ww2. Shoot the leader, shoot the rear, the rest is pinched inbetween and has nowhere to go

Tonk :) But seriously, everyone I've spoken to in a global heresy discord agrees - the sabre is an excellent tank. While the autocannon might not have as much use as it could, the saker and the nuetron do more than enough to justify the sabre's existence. Additionally, some people enjoying taking all 4 sabre missiles as a sort of single use shotgun tactic, annihilating anything that comes close to the tonk. Also the sabre is adorable. The cutest tonk, the smol baby.
I love this model, and I was wondering, what do you think would be the safest bet for the loadout on main weapon? I think volkite looks the coolest, but neutron is fire too.
Very interesting, enjoying these little trips through history (even though I was there at the time, groan). Weirdly last night I started assembling and hacking up a Deimos Rhino to make an homage to the Sabre tank, didn't realise they'd gone and done an official model three years ago! Also if you do a history of the Glaive make sure you check out WD120 page 8, interesting to see how things were originally named!
Well, I'm a fan of Dark Angels, and now building Ironwing detachment builded around Glaive. But I'm also want two Sabers just because I love how they look.
Always paint or seal in your magnets, Super glue fractures over time to pop the magnet out, and then it's a continual abuse of super glue forever, so a coat of PVA over that part, then A Matt coat, works wonders.
If you look at the original model of the sabre closely you will notice that whereas the track sponsons do , ion fact, come from a Rhino, the hull itself is the top part of a Land Raider hull.
I'd say that turned out wonderfully! You created a very nice paint scheme, and the fine detail work looks great. I personally always feel like the "dirty and used" detailing looks bad, as it's being applied, and wish it could stay "new in box" forever, and then its done, and on the battlefield, and it looks great, as yours does. I do wish I had a skill level that approached this, but I haven't had a need to do that much, to hone it to this degree. Your efforts look wonderful!
I keep hoping we'll be getting the Sabre in plastic at some point. Even if we have to wait till after a plastic Whirlwind, and Vindicator. A plastic Arquitor would be nice too.
Hmm l remember a guy at my store mount a heavy bolter on the front of a rhino for his "Stinker Boys" (squat junkyard crews) way back when the 2ed SW codex came out . And he used WWII german "skirts" on the vehicle.
Wow, I had that WD for the longest time. It was one of two old issues I'd borrowed from a friend who had borrowed them from a friend. I sold it with my entire WD collection (although until I just looked for it and failed to find it I thought I'd kept that issue).
You know what puzzles me? In 30K, Space Marines knew how to make all manner of super tank destroyers and what not, all based on the Rhino Chassis, but they forgot how to build a Razorback. They had to wait until the end of the Horus Heresy conflict, before they found the plans again, that told them how to put twin linked laz cannons on the roof of a Rhino.
The reason that all old generation tanks had silver tracks is because older generation tank tracks were bare metal. newer gen and refurbished tanks have tyres bolted to the tracks to protect road surfaces and give them more traction .
U don't need to put Mark softer on flat surfaces. It mainly ment for curved surface so you dont get the folds or over a panel line. Also look into a decal squeegee. It's so much easier to use then ur brush and it hurts me everything watching a mini painter use thier brush if not a q tip works good too.
I feel like Dave just wants to find all of the generations of Horus Heresy and paint all of them. I'ld watch that
That's a great idea!
@@TabletopTime If you can do what you love, go as far as it'll take you. I mean, what else are ya gonna do with all those old, unpainted, possibly scratch built w/ love models. So much history, so much table, a lot of time

I'm really surprised how effective the Non-Metallic Metal painting is.

But if you look at this tank you can see the links, so it seems unlikely that they have rubber pads on. Also, I doubt anyone in the 40k universe is worrying about what their tanks are doing to roads.

4:00 which is pretty much exactly how i built mine about 15 years ago.
It's definitely changed Dave !
i love glaives and fellblades so much i'd love to see that
Wow, I had that WD for the longest time. It was one of two old issues I'd borrowed from a friend who had borrowed them from a friend. I sold it with my entire WD collection (although until I just looked for it and failed to find it I thought I'd kept that issue).
really want to see some more of these super heavies
that sabre was painted eavier than metal
Isn't the "finished" Tank shot on the spinning display platform from before dirt weathering ?
Yeah, paint that tank!
Do it! We wanna see more tanks!!
The Saber also appears in the music video Disturbed - Land of Confusion.
The reason that all old generation tanks had silver tracks is because older generation tank tracks were bare metal. newer gen and refurbished tanks have tyres bolted to the tracks to protect road surfaces and give them more traction .
Fun fact, you can see the old saber tank in the first 30 sec of the music video "land of confusion" by the band Disturbed
Also for Mark setter u just need a drop on where u want the decal. And apply the decal on top of the drop scraping a way the excess.
I really really miss that GW used to encourage modifying and kitbashing etc.
MORE 40k! MORE 30k! I’m talkin’ Lore! Painting bat reps and RPs
So did you have to strip your Raptors again, to paint them in your new scheme?
