In this clip, Hurricane Chris talked about his debut album, '51/50 Ratchet,' and how the term ratchet originated in Shreveport, LA. He recounted some of the issues he began to have with his label around that time and how the label was milking "A Bay Bay" but didn't put much effort into promoting his album. Moreover, Hurricane Chris expressed his apprehension toward dropping nothing but catchy dance records as someone whose background was rooted in battle rap.
I see why a lot of artists became more independent as time went on so that they could have more freedom and creative control!!!
This is also why Vlad has been telling these new artist to invest properly.

@@lowki5573 true, but not as much as. For the last decade, more artists have been independent which is why you only here a few hip hop artists on the radio now. Not to mention, there aren't as many record companies due to a lot of downsizing due to the fact that most sales are digital which costs less than physical records like vinyl and cds.

The worst thing about getting signed so young is that the labels have to market u a certain way and then once u reach adulthood in most cases its hard to break out of that image. Look at bow wow for instance…as soon as that nigga got his drivers license and did that song with birdman his popularity started to take a dive (aint nobody wanna see him grow up). The only two stars that were able to transition from kid star to adult star flawlessly was chris brown and ll cool j. I might be missing a few but those two definitely come to mind.
