I'm really surprised that your dermatologist has suggested going on accutane again, your skin is so clear!

Hey Katie 😊 I think we've spoken a few times over the years about skin - I've had a very similar journey to you. I'm 30 and just about to start accutane again, on a very low dose over a longer period of time. Apparently, that can help to mitigate the side effects and help prevent relapse too. I put off accutane for years because, like you, I felt my acne wasn't severe enough. But now I'm a bit older I'm noticing it's scarring more, which is affecting my mental health, so for me it's so worth it. It's such a personal decision but all I'd say is don't be scared of judgement - only people who've experienced acne know how emotionally painful it can be, and no one has any right to judge you for whatever treatment you choose. It's your body, and remember mental health is just as important as physical health. I've also tried spiro btw, so if you need any info, let me know! I personally don't want to stay on it right now as I know I'd have tl come off it to have children/breastfeed, and that's a time I reallyyyy don't want to have my acne rebounding. But whatever you choose, I hope it all goes well xxx

Can I ask how long you are planning to go back on for? I've also been speaking to my doctor about going back on it for a low dose for longer but not quite sure what that means? I know everyone's different but would be useful to have a guide! Thanks

I took Spironolactone a few years after going on Accutane (my hormonal acne came back but not as strong as it was before) and it really helped to clear my acne up better than any other treatment I'd done and with little to no side effects for me. Antibiotics were the most ineffective for the years I was on them prior to Accutane and they made my body feel off. I've used Tretinoin (American name) topically and have been a fan of it, but I would not knock Spironolactone completely off your list to try if you are thinking about doing anything further than just treating it how you've been. Wishing you all of the luck in your skin journey! xx

Hey Katie. Apologies in advance for my English, not my 1st language...i wanted to share with you my experience cause I feel very much related to you...
I'm 30 and at the moment I'm undergoing my 2nd roaccutane treatment. This medication can be prescribed on lower doses, but then should be taken through longer periods of time. Side effects will be minimal, right now I'm taking 10 mg and have had no effects at all. The contraceptive treatment is another issue, in my case I am taking the pills, but when my skin was getting clearer my dermatologist suggested that I could take the medication you have mentioned instead of the contraceptive pills. Apparently once roaccutane cleans your pores the contraceptive or the spironolactone, (which is normally used to treat hypertension) prevent the pores from clotting and getting back to the way they used to be.
So basically my journey (guided by my doctor) has been:
    1st clear skin with roaccutane
2nd introduce contraceptive or spironolactone whilst reducing the dosage of roaccutane.
3rd before ending the roaccutane treatment start using retinoid creams at night progressively to replace the roaccutane treatment completely once it's done.
4th use topic retinoids daily forever and everrrrr😂.

Giving up dairy got rid of most of my acne but I still had breakouts around my mouth and chin and Spironolactone got rid of those completely, I haven’t had any side effects but if you don’t want to take a medicine you shouldn’t feel pressured to do so! 😊

I am now in my late 50’s and have very sensitive, acne prone skin from 13 right up until my 40s. When going through peri menopause and now menopause my skin again became spotty and lots of acne. If I use anything perfumed it gets worse. I now use Tretinoin & Niacinamide which is compounded specifically for me and my skin has been soooo much better since. I now only use CeraVe unperfumed brand without any kind of mineral oil or butters. Also La Roche Posay unperfumed toleriane cleanser.

I’ve literally been thinking about how good and clear your skin has been in your last few videos! I’m 30 and also still get hormonal acne, I found the only
Thing that actually helped especially the deep cystic spots was going completely dairy free. I never believed it when people told me, but it honestly made a bigger difference than any medical acne treatment has.

Same! I cut it out for a week by accident whilst on a course and my skin was completely different, I reintroduced it and was back to breakouts and huge cystic spots again, been dairy free ever since and my skin is so clear now!

I feel your frustration. I have a neurological condition where I can’t take vitamin A, which means I can’t take Roaccutane .i was getting frustrated with antibiotics as they are only a quick fix for a short period of time, if they even clear your skin up in the first place. So I tried having consistent monthly facial for about 18 months and it made a huge difference to my skin and improved the type of spots I got. I’m not saying, don’t take medication but how often do you get a facial? Might be worth attacking the issue from inside and out?

Hey, I am 32 and too suffer with acne, I went to see a dermatologist regarding my acne (constant spots / large boil size spots) when I discussed it with my dermatologist, he said it was hormone related and that going on roaccutane May mean that my acne may return. I have been on Spironolactone since February and will be on it for two years, but the acne will then not come back. I have noticed such a difference, no large boil spots nor angry spots and my skin is way less oily. If I get a spot it lasts less than 3 days and goes away quickly. The dermatologist said it can take 8 months to see no acne. I would highly recommend it. Xx

I am taking 100mg. I am still getting some breakouts but they disappear within 48-72hrs. My dermatologist said it would take time to see results. But I can see that my skin is much better on them than me not being on them. X

I was on Roaccutane and spots came back after a year. I’ve since been taking skin accumax supplements and it has worked so well and cleared my skin without all the nasty side effects. Start by taking 4 tablets a day, and then once skin is clear, take 1 or 2 a day. Please read the reviews, but they have been life changing for me xx

Ive been on roaccutane. It was such a challenge. My skin has cleared up considerably. But, I still get some spots. I would not go on Roaccutane again. I felt it wasnt great for my health. Even though they monitored the effects, I felt it wasnt great for my liver. The stuff is crap basically. Also, Ive been prone to wrinkles, so ageing has sped up. Thats the final thing I would take into consideration. Good luck!

I’ve recently completed my first course in my late thirties and I would go on a second round in a heartbeat. Those hormonal solutions like spiro and birth control only work while on them and Accutane really is the gold standard when it comes to cystic acne. The copper iud is a really great non-hormonal option if you need a birth control. I had it in between kids and loved mine.

I’m not one to ever give advice on skin as I’ve struggled with mine for over 8 years, but I’m hoping this can help someone as I’ve done so much research on it over the years.
If acne is hormonal, it will stem from excess testosterone. This doesn’t always mean that testosterone is high, in females if your female hormones are low then the body behaves as if androgens are high.
Stress can be the main trigger for low female hormones, and cortisol (stress hormone) and insulin trigger androgens so it’s important to balance these.
This is why women with PCOS struggle with high androgens, because of an insulin issue.
It’s not easy to work out how to balance this yourself which is why it can be beneficial to see a practitioner that can help you do testing to see where your levels are at.
I tried accutane now for the past 2 weeks and had crippling anxiety - so no judgement at all from me. I’ve done doxy in the past too, which only gave temporary relief because my issue stems deeper.
Hope this helps someone anyway x

I had a very similar experience literally just yesterday, where the dermatologist said roaccutane was my only option, I didn't even know about Spironolactone :(
I finished my first course of roaccutane 4.5 years ago, but the acne has slowly come back.
I'm 36 (37 next month) and I'm so fed up being the only person among my friendship group and family who has full on acne. But like yourself Katie, I really don't want to go back on the contraceptive pill or spend 7-9 months on harsh steroids which have many side affects. Also, there's no guarantee that the second course will even work...so is it worth it?
And being almost 37 I'm thinking about my internal clock and whether it's worth it or if now is the time where myself and my boyfriend want to start trying for a child, which we've discussed many times. Just very bad timing for this type of drug.
But as many of your lovely followers have mentioned below, acne/scarring is such a weight on your mental health, it's definitely affected mine over the last 10 years. So do what's best for you and your mind.
From what you've said microneedling really sounds like it's helped you so far :) so maybe keep up with it to see if the treatments give you great results!
Btw I decided to go on roaccutane over 5 years ago after discovering your documented journey and I've not stopped watching your videos since :) and I don't regret my first course of roaccutane at all.
    xxx

Hi Katie, I am a 50 year old woman and I’m actually waiting on my appointment for the accutane clinic. This will be my third time on it since the age of 29. My skin does very well on it but seems to last only 5 years . Like yourself I can have a couple months and my skin is very clear, however in those weeks when it breaks out…. It’s unbearable for me . I know how self conscious I am in that time .. therefore all I want is to start on it again. We have a 9 month waiting list up here in Scotland, and it can’t pass quick enough. It’s a very individual choice. But wanted to share.. your not alone ❤xx

A good and consistent skincare routine might really be sufficient! Your skin is acne prone, but you have it under control quite well already I feel like. But skincare and ingredients is SUCH a complicated topic 😩 I swear by the 3-step-moisture-method from Olena Beley and despite my problem with skin picking and the resulting wounds I have the nicest skin I ever had 🥺 Now I just need to get the skin picking in check 😂😂😂 but thats on me. Anyway… Olena for example is doing lots of one-on-ones with people with bad acne, helping them find a skincare routine that works for their specific case. It might be worth a try to find someone who you feel like you can trust with good knowledge about skincare ingredients and formulas before commiting to roaccutane. And if that doesn‘t work you could still take the leap and do the journey again!
(Can‘t believe it‘s so long ago 😱😱😱 I found you through your roaccutane journey back then. Time flies…)

So your sewing attempts.... You are not bad at it at all. You did however pick possibly the hardest dresses you could have to take up. The brown linen is bias cut, which means even if the fabric is stable, it is slippery as hell, and that's why the seam is wonky. The black and white dress is a lace/ knit material so likewise one of the trickiest pieces you could have chosen. I would suggest you try again and invest in a quick unpick for any mistakes. From years of watching your videos, I think you'd really enjoy sewing given a little time and practice, it's more immediate than knitting in terms of creative gratification. Also thank you for the prompt, now I want to get my machines out and make a dress. Love your videos always.

@katesnooks I'm still on it as I think it's something you have to take continuously unfortunately :'(. I haven't tried coming off it yet and been on it for about a year now. I'm just thankful I don't experience any side effects!
Previously I had been on the contraceptive pill (dianette) to treat my acne and honestly I felt so depressed on it - I feel like the world had a grey tinge to it as weird as that sounds so I stay away from anything hormonal now and have the copper coil as a contraceptive.
Although I think your skin looks great I completely get how you feel when you're in your mid 30s and still struggle with acne! Sending love ❤️

Hi Katie, I was wondering if you have ever thought about looking into traditional chinese medicine for treating your acne? I am currently studying it (and acupuncture) I am six months in and in class we did discuss a few times that acne is a skin condition that can be treated with certain chinese herbs (all natural, no chemicals) and acupuncture can support the healing process as well. Just thought I would mention it, maybe it’s an alternative to taking pills/hormones again… lots of love ❤

True, for me it has to be diary and gluten free, unfortunately my digestive system does not work well with these two. Last year I was on drugs for my spine, and it changed my liver, unfortunately, and my face was in deep cystic acne, so I've been taking milk thistle oil and it's doing great for my liver.
After that the liver enzymes are significantly better and the face is cleared of cystic acne. Acne skin, especially after the thirties is an indicator of changes from the inside, and a lot of nerves are needed to discover the problem. Each skin reacts differently to everything suggested here. I wish you the best of luck on that journey.

Adding a controversial opinion here: I'm one of the ones that accutane took down. This drug absolutely devastated my health, and my skin. I was young, naive, irrationally involved with the condition of my skin, and ultimately taken advantage of. Only in a twisted culture will we willfully damage our health for the idea of clear skin. You look beautiful, and healthy. Keep it that way, believe the words you are reading, and stay far far away from this dangerous pharmaceutical.

I think you have a hormone imbalance like millions of women just like me, which is causing your acne. You need to forget about antibiotics and see a functional medicine practitioner, or naturopath / naturopathy - herbal medicines, no nasty antibiotics. Pls Google these terms, honestly natural is so much safer.
