Yes, I agree for the typical social media consumer who doesn't care much about quality, it doesn't matter too much. But those people don't have a strong reason to upgrade. For those chasing the highest quality for professional work like many of us watching this video, this is very important. I primarily use action cameras for FPV, and I'm among a growing number of people in this market. For me, the stuff that doesn't matter: - Overheating (action cams never overheat flying on a drone) - Battery life (in fact, I preferably would remove the battery for weight, and connect the camera directly to the drone battery) - File size (each shot is only a few minutes long, and SD cards are inexpensive) - Active stabilization (always stabilize in post) The stuff that does matter: - Sensor aspect ratio, so that you can stabilize better in post, and reframe better for vertical video or tilting in post (GoPro is hands down winner here with an 8:7 sensor instead of 4:3) - Bitrate (GoPro is winner here with GoPro Labs unlocking to 180 Mbps) - 10-bit color. 4:2:0 means fewer color samples, but those samples themselves capture more precise color. Record a complex red flower with 10-bit log versus 8-bit and come back and tell me 8-bit is fine. (GoPro is winner here, since DJI's log is not as flat, and Ace Pro is out of the question with only 8-bit) - Weight (GoPro is winner here by a lot since there are naked versions of the camera. Over 100 grams lighter. Ace Pro is absolute last place) - Low light performance for indoor shots or outdoor late in the day shots. (Ace Pro is winner here). To answer your questions you asked at the end of your video. Yes I shoot in manual shutter, manual white balance, manual ISO, 10-bit. The only exception is having to do auto-shutter or similar if going from bright daylight to indoors. Never auto white balance. Never 8-bit.
Well. what you are saying is right but.. if a user is that serious about the video quality,. why would the user use this action camera on first hand? They should use a mirrorless camera with 12mm lens that would give far superior video output. Action cam is just an action cam. it can never replace a serious camera.
@@baron2022ph you may have missed the part that I said I use action cams for FPV drones and that one of the important elements in considering action cams is weight. FPV drone users are not the only ones who use action cams professionally because of their form factor and weight. In fact, it's precisely these professional users of action cams that have any real need to upgrade and drive innovation in image quality in a small package.
This was awesome brother! I've been doing a ton of testing with 8-bit vs 10-bit because I'm pretty sure you can't see the difference on any social media platforms, especially once the compression algorithms do their voodoo. Nice work brother!
@@akeem11h I record 90% off my footage in D log M on the dji action 4 , Pocket 3 and now the action 5. With 10 bit you have more to work with, it is easier to manipulate the image and get the result you want. It is easier to save an image in 10 bit than 8 bit.
If you notice, people are using their action cameras for more than just jumping out of airplanes and climbing rocks anymore. This is why low-light performance has suddenly become of interest to action camera buyers. Ultimately, people will be very interested in 10-bit color because you can easily color grade from your cell phone now. And if you are combining multiple different cameras (like a drone), you don't want to shock the viewer with two completely different color sciences. It will look very strange. So my conclusion is that all action cameras should have 10-bit log profiles for people who want to use it. Otherwise you can still use the standard color profile on the camera as an option. But we should not be operating in two different worlds.
Thx for the comment. If you want to match many cameras then of course it will be helpful.. but most consumers have one camera and they are riding bike or jumping or vlogging with it.. no need to colour it and shoot manual. Because if you shoot dlog and auto exposure this is a nightmare to edit
10 bit is a plus but it really takes much more effort. If it is for a serious videographer, then 10 bit would matter. but for normal people, they will hardly see a big difference except for dusk and dawn situation. DJI Action 5 pro came up with good improvement but still can't beat Ace pro's dynamic range. I am just waiting to see who things will change around. I am a big DJI fan but I also give a big hand for Insta 360. Consumers are happy with fair competition in the market.
I don't think you need 10-bit unless you're using a true LOG profile like S-Log3. Not with D-Log M. I don't however, feel like I need to color grade any differently than I do with the normal color profiles after applying a LUT. The only thing that can get tricky is if the exposure or white balance is off a lot, which can happen in normal color profiles as well. With D-Log M, it is frustrating because it does not prioritize faces with exposure. I wish there was a setting to turn it on or off in D-Log M like you can with Sony's cameras (I always leave it on).

I zoom in on video a lot. I do street interviews and the default pov is often too wide, and even when it's not, I have to make cuts and a good way to disguise them is zooming in, or out. On the GoPro 11 I currently use 5.3K, but I admit it can sometimes be a bit of a pain. With proxies very doable though. But I'd prefer better image quality in low light so I can zoom without the image turning into a pixelated dumpster fire as is the case with GoPro already with just the slightest low light situations.
