You can hear the joy in Costas' voice and delivery as he recalls the history of the Browns. He's such a great broadcaster and especially baseball lover, and I'm so glad he made St. Louis his adopted home.
I have clear memory of walking from Natural Bridge Ave to Sportsman's Park on a clear day in summer of (probably) 1949. I asked my dad if our team was going to win. I never forgot his answer, ""No, we're going to a Browns Game".
Great memory, though. Thanks for sharing it.
The irony of 2 sports franchises called the Browns moved to Baltimore
thedominatior39 R good point!
St Louis still owns the browns just like Seattle still owns the supersonics
Coincidence, not irony
@@donaldcasalone4243
Ironic coincidence.
Happy now? You little pissant.
@donaldcasalone4243 No irony and coincidence. So your attempt to undercut this post failed.
I wear a Browns hat and jersey when I go to Cardinal games. I went to the throw back game between the Cards and Baltimore about 10 years ago, when the Orioles wore the Browns uniform and decided this will be the only time I will get to root for the Browns. Browns won 8-1.
greg wilkinson. Awesome. As a fan of the history of baseball I love it. Unfortunately there is no successor to the Kelly's Killers or other non Reds teams (most of whom also called themselves Reds), we do have family though in that the Braves and to an extent Red Sox are sons of the Wright Brothers, and the Nats have a lot of connections to the Reds as well, mainly because of the influence of Jim Bowden.
I like the old teams like Brooklynn Dodgers, Kansas City A's,Boston Braves.
@@copperhead9437 So do I, my friend - the old teams are a part of the history of these many pro sports.
Lesson to be learned: If you don't want to lose your team to Baltimore, don't name your teams the BROWNS!
Just ask Cleveland and St. Louis!
Yeah, if a hockey team or a NBA team ever call themselvs the Browns, don't let anybody from Baltimore go watch them.
+FAITHandLOGIC Difference is, STL won that trade.
bots08 How was that a trade?
3 years late, but the Cardinals were also called the Browns.
Jay and the original Yankees started a year in Baltimore called the Orioles
Bill Veeck: best owner ever. That "grandstand managers" idea can't be beat. Oh, and my second baseball hero, Roy Sievers, was rookie-of-the-year for the Browns. Tore his shoulder, so Veeck hit grounders to make Roy a 1B. The Orioles didn't want Sievers, so the Nats got him. In 1957, Roy Sievers became the first Washington player to lead the league in home runs...even though the "shortened" LF line at Griffith Stadium was about 350 feet. MLB wanted Veeck gone, so the Lords of Baseball refused to let Veeck move the Browns to Kansas City...where they might have carried some fans from outside St Louis.
used to wear my Brown's had to spring training games in Miami. Never went to a game they did not recognize the hat over the PA
Lefty Lightfield taught me the fork ball. Won 29 games for the 29 browns
There is a great book, written years ago called "Even The Browns" which chronicles their 1944 pennant winning season and world series against the Cardinals.
I recommend it highly!
"Veeck as in Wreck!"
Even the Browns!
read it many times.
I know Ned Garver. His daughter played fast pitch softball, for my father jn the early 70's. she could have played in the majors.
It's too bad the Browns didn't have Branch Rickey on their payroll.
Actually they did.
Wow, it just occurred to me that both Baltimore sports teams were once called the Browns. What are the odds of that?
One was given the other was stolen.
@@4149stonepony hey I agree they stole the football team from you but the baseball team you gave away just saying I hate Baltimore that crappy city
Shot of Ebbets Field at 6:30?
YES, sloppy production
Bill veeck was the original 'genetic jackhammer'
You need to catch the Tommy Lasardo video from the Browns luncheon in 2010. A riot. Great.
Bob Costas, St. Louis homer.
As a fan of baseball history, I love the Browns. Such an interesting team like no other. At least no other non Negro League team post 1900.
I think the Browns also wanted to leave to California and be the first West Coast team. There were some concerns with air traveling, but that had taken care of itself.
But then the plans stopped once the Pearl Harbor attacked happened and owners now didnt want to move near the coast.
What do the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens have in common. They both the Browns.
2:22 I didn't think you could say "midget."
i had to double check and went "god damn Bob"
So don't name your team the browns if you don't want them to be a losing team.
His father was known as Bill no-witt
Great video!! Side not: The Orioles have distanced themselves from the Browns history, but the kept the Browns colors to this day.
Actually they still could wear the uniforms they even sold pendants an other brownie items I saw it in the MLB orioles shop
I can kind of see why the Orioles would distance themselves from the Browns, kind of like how the Rangers distance themselves from the Senators. Lack of talent, lack of success, and far from a rich history. The Dodgers, Giants, and A’s didn’t distance themselves because of the amount of success and talent that they had before moving to California. The Browns only won one AL Pennant (1944) and one HOF (Sisler). Other than that, sorry to say, not much to speak of. I see the reasoning behind it.
Cleveland Browns become the Ravens & the St. Louis Browns become the Orioles.
The Baltimore Browns? Nah, don't sound right.
Urban Shocker, Cooperstown 2025.St louis Browns 1919 to 1924

Now that's something I never considered, my friend - truly, Jack Kennedy was on the money with his assessment.
First in shoes, first in booze, and last in the American League.
First in shoes. First in booze... but last in the American League.

Why is Bob bouncing while he is talking??
He's getting a knob job.
@@TheBatugan77 steve Garvey is NOT my padre 🤣🤪🤣😜
Look at his knees,he is bouncing why?????
If it's Brown,flush it.
I think the St. Louis Terriers of the Federal League don't count because the Federal League doesn't count as a "big" major league, along with the National Association, Union Association, and Player's League from the late 1800's.
Wrong.
They made the team leave
Veek couldn't compete with Budweiser.
Don’t mess with Mr. Booze.
Franchise relocation blows!!!
great story but orioles are better
Some of you...
You know who you are...
Should be ashamed of yourselves.
the best baseball town is chicago
Looks like st Louis has the baseball problem. Cubs are taking over the north. Actually Chicago is an all sports town except for the Southside baseball.
Detroit has the best fans.
bullSHIT
I'm sick of hearing Bob Costas voice and I'm sick of really hearing him right at the beginning of this video with a minute and 50 seconds into a St Louis the heart of baseball I'm so tired of people say that the St Louis is like knowledgeable in the heart and the best fans s*** it ain't the only town
