  • Formula E's first trip to India, is so far the only trip it's done to the nation. We take a look around this short lived circuit, and all it's interesting quirks and corner combinations.

Giant Wheel because if you look at the helicopter shots...the outside of the corner has a Ferris wheel which is called a Giant Wheel in India. Cinema Chicane, because that building you see there is a mall with an IMAX movie theatre. Machan tree is a fun tree house thing at the NTR gardens that outlines that area of the Circuit. Passport because there is a passport office next to that area. The Hairpin is again called Lumbini Park because the same park is to the left of it. The corners have names because it is an actual street where traffic goes. I hope this made sense.

The state government that was governing the state when the race was first hosted, renewed the deal for the E-Prix in 2024. However, by the end of 2023 that government was voted out in the election. The new government just said we don't know anything about what the previous government did, let's think about the project and then breached the contract. Formula E is looking to return probably in a different city. Most probably Chennai. There's a new street circuit being built there capable to host night races. It will probably host an F4 India round first this year before submitting a bid for Formula E

I wonder if that track would have enough braking, it'd be Formula E's Monza compared to the rest of the tracks on the calendar, but with, a much higher difficulty than Monza itself.

Here's the thing about the R246
It's on a public road, and a busy one at that. It directly feeds traffic to and from the famous Shutoko metropolitan expressway.
Holding a race where they have to close such road even for just one day is frowned upon by the Japanese police, which is why you don't see any street races on actual public roads being held in Japan, even for the local ones.

Reason for the IRL cancellation due to 'technical' issues was to do with the chassis, it's a spec series. There was a fundamental issue with the brakes.

  • @robdavies82

The track has changed since last year. Satellite imagery shows the hairpin no longer exists and they’ve changed the layout by building a straight dual carriageway around there. Any future racing would need to use a different layout.
The Indian League Event was cancelled because a branch fell onto the circuit and was hit by a car resulting in the driver being hurt. They didn’t show any replays or footage of it, and it’s not mentioned on their official sites, but some googling shows it did happen and they tried to keep it hush. I think they were worried the track would loose its FIA grade and they’d have lost the eprix.
As for the future, it all looks a bit political :( Drivers weren’t happy with it because the nearest toilets meant they had to walk into a nearby shopping centre, which is poor - even national club circuits have toilets, but this was inconvenient as you had hundreds of people working in the paddock trying to use the same toilets.

I live in Hyderabad, there's been no change to the roads that made up the circuit. There's a flyover that goes over the hairpin, maybe that's the thing you see?

Here are my suggestions for future videos in your failed street circuits series (it's a great series):
    Vancouver (CART)
    Brooklyn, New York (Formula E)
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (Formula 1 and CART)
    Meadowlands Grand Prix (CART)
    Burke Lakefront Airport (CART/Champ Car)
Edmonton City Centre Airport (Champ Car/IndyCar)
    Beijing Street Circuit (A1GP)
The "Grand Prix" version of the Adelaide Street Circuit (Formula 1 and ALMS)
That's it. Again, good job on this series.
