My parents bought me this as my first guitar back in 2013, the Guitar Center in Fairfax VA sold it to my parents even though the neck joint was fucked up. I saw the guy try to screw the neck joint back together, but I thought it was just a calibration. We went back to my country and I only realized then that the actual wood in the neck joint had broken. I put in some elbow grease, wood filler, a few screw plugs and a little piece of a library card to give it the correct neck angle; learned how to calibrate it on youtube videos and has been an amazing guitar ever since. Extremely stable tuning, I think I would tune it just a few times after putting on new strings and then about once a month. Very acoustically resonant guitar, something that surprised me but that apparently is a characteristic of SG guitars. The fretwork was flawless from factory (rare) but there were obvious flaws in the way it was painted and finished. I see that the new ones coming out don't have those flaws but there are complaints of the fretwork being half-assed. The tuning heads were fine on my guitar but most other Special VE's were a nightmare. I would say, if you could afford it, get the guitar by itself and spend a little more money on the amp. The amps that come with the packs usually aren't very good, but they will get the job done if need be. As for an amp recommendation, I would go with a Boss Katana.
@@Electric.Flamingo Gotcha! Thank you so much man. And what do you recommend changing on the guitar so I can get a similar sound to James hetfield's clean sound if you heard it live
Best I can say is put the Het Set EMGs in and you should get in the ball park of his tones. Again, just make sure you pair it with a good amp and you will sound great! ⚡️🦩
I got it as an impulse buy and I love it for some reason lol. It’s got some fret buzz but it’a kinda cool. It’s already all chipped and the wood is splintered but now it’s got some character
What pick-ups are using as well i wanting to diy the guitar so i want to make it my self and using Australian timber because that where im from and my frist guitar
at this price you probably won't have any problem reselling it later on for purchase price, i'm getting one! The only thing that bothers me is that strap button location
The strap stud is in the best possible place on this guitar, for reducing neck-dive. Just make sure you get some strap locks on there for peace of mind if you're worried. I've never had any issues with mine and the stud is in the same location as this.
I’m used to playing Les Pauls and have really had problems liking the neck/body ”proportions” on SG. The neck fels so far away (due to body size and where the neck joint is). I noticed the SG VE doesn’t have the spacer/disctance between the neck and neck pickup,. So in theory it look like the fretboard is “closer” to the body than compared to other SG. Would you say that is noticeable when playing? Hope I managed to explain this in a way that makes sense.. 😊
I would say that I have noticed a difference with the VE vs a "standard" SG. I like LPs and SGs fairly equal, but I do understand what you're saying. Especially with the neck feeling far away.
You can get an SG Muse for not much more than this. I got the jet black metallic version for £249 last year and it's a great guitar. The Muse series come with some better tuning heads (don't get hung up on tuning heads, even the expensive Gibson ones drop out of tune regularly and any serious guitarist should always be tuning before playing/recording anyway), alnico classic pro humbuckers and gorgeous metallic finishes. I'm just switching all the hardware out for gold stuff now because I think that'll make it look even cooler.
I think I may have fiddled with the Muse line when it first came put. I love the finishes on those! I'll need to try and get my hands on one at some point if I can.
Hey bro do you think is this a good guitar for someone to learn , I don’t play any guitar in general because it is cheap af looks and sounds good too especially makes me wanna pick up and play it . !!
Honest review, i like this. I am looking for a guitar that i would tune up strictly to open d tuning, using it mostly for blues slide playing. I already have better guitars, but i don't want to hesitate any of them for that thing, cause i am not that far into slide playing, so this is the one i am looking at. It would probaby be a walnut one. I am gonna set it to medium to high action, use it mainly for slide, so i don't care about fret buzz. Interesting, and i wonder if these pickups and tuners will be good enough for my taste. If not, i'll mod it later anyway, it'll be a learning process, so i think i am just gonna bought it at the end of that month. I like the price, it's something i can afford right now.
I think it would be great for slide! With the way the pickups sound, it would work great! Thanks for checking out my video, too and for the kind words! ⚡️🦩
Consider the SG Muse for that. It comes with coil splitting pots, as well as an out-of-phase switch for the middle pickup setting. Lots of options, and the finishes are gorgeous too. I keep mine in DGCFAD (D standard), but I've also played it in Drop C and C standard, and it sounds killer.
is this a comfortable guitar to sit with? i have a squier classic vibe jazzmaster and an 80s fender strat so ive always leaned on my guitars. im planning on buying this as a thrashy beat up guitar and because it will be the only guitar in my collection with humbuckers for now.
We gotta be smart together and make smart decisions with our money. Something tells me companies capitalize on our “stupidity”. 199$ is more fair than 1960-70 whatever how old 5,000-20,000 guitar. Than again if you have the money you have the money.
Not as bad, believe it or not. I think it offers a bit more counterbalance and the fact that the neck isn't super heavy to begin with, it's already pretty balanced.
A wide suede/leather strap will remedy it, but yes, all SGs have significant neck dive. It's even worse on the better ones because the bodies are thinner and lighter, but damn they are comfortable and great guitars to play!
@@Electric.Flamingo i just have to wait till we get my Id and stuff so I can get a job I'm just gonna try and find a decent paying online job it'll make getting the money some what quicker if it pays decent
Not a dumb question! There may be a starter pack that has an amp and a bag and stuff with it, but if you go and just but the guitar itself, it does not come with an amp or anything.
Depends on what your preference is feel wise. If you want a really thin neck and 24 frets, I would go for the Ibanez. If you want a slight chunkier neck, go with the SG.
@@Electric.Flamingo haha ik what the neck is but im confused on how the thick or thin the neck affects my playing? sorry im new to guitars i only know my music theory 😓
It's all good, we all start somewhere! So, there are different neck carves, different neck widths, different neck thicknesses, different fret sizes, all kinds of stuff. It's all really a comfort thing. If you have smaller hands, you may want to go with a thinner neck and vice versa. You may hear a thin neck described as "fast" really meaning it's easier to shred on. Me, I prefer thicker necks but I have bigger hands so it's more comfortable. I wouldn't think too much into it, honestly. The best thing you can do is get your hands on both and see what feels best to you!
@@Electric.Flamingo I see, other than the neck, are their any other differences between the two guitars? Does the guitar matter in terms of sound or is it the amp?
The pickups can make a difference, mainly in output, but the amp, more importantly, the speaking in the amp, makes the biggest difference in sound. Differences between the two guitars in question, body shape and neck obviously. The ibanez has 24 frets as opposed to 22 on the SG, so the scale length is different. The SG will have less string tension. The SG will probably be lighter than the Ibanez. You have two volumes and two tone knobs on the SG as opposed to the Ibanez, which may only have one of each. You may get a 5 way switch on the Ibanez vs a 3 way on the SG, so the Ibanez may have more tone options.
@@Electric.Flamingo I finally purchased this guitar lol. Should be here next week sometime. I was going to get the Firefly SG style but the purchasing process through Guitars Garden seems SUPER SKETCHY. So I canceled my order and went with a company I can trust. Plus the purchase from Musicians Friend gave me a $15 credit. So I'll probably be getting strings with that when needed.
@@Electric.Flamingo Man! I'm hoping you can help me. Is it just me or does the bridge of this guitar sit lower than more expensive SG'S? If so is the neck shorter too? I'm hoping not because I plan on getting a replacement neck. 😬
That's going to happen with any guitar. Just clean it off when you change strings or run a microfiber cloth underneath the strings and you should be good!
Can't go wrong with this. My only advice would be to get a set up done on it. They aren't expensive, but it will make the playing experience so much better! ⚡🦩
Depends on the style of music you are wanting to play. If you're looking for a more classic rock sound/feel, I would say go with the SG. If you're wanting to do more metal/high gain stuff, I think the Ibanez might be better. Scale length will affect the feel as well, the SG will have a shorter scale length, making bends a little easier. The SG will probably have a fatter neck than the Ibanez as well, so I would figure out which neck shape you prefer as well.

Best I can say is put the Het Set EMGs in and you should get in the ball park of his tones. Again, just make sure you pair it with a good amp and you will sound great! ⚡️🦩
Paks are good.
If you can get one delivered to you….without the headstock cracked. I’m on number three right now from Amazon. Wish me luck.
Oof. That sucks, man. Best of luck!
i have an epi sg. she serves me well
They are very loyal servants. 🤘🦩
@@Electric.Flamingonot as much a servant, but a companion
I got it as an impulse buy and I love it for some reason lol. It’s got some fret buzz but it’a kinda cool. It’s already all chipped and the wood is splintered but now it’s got some character
This model will age different because of the finish, so it has the potential to have lots of character. 😁
Please review the 61 Reissue Ephiphone SG Standard about $599.00
I'll see what I can do! Thanks for the suggestion! ⚡️🦩
What pick-ups are using as well i wanting to diy the guitar so i want to make it my self and using Australian timber because that where im from and my frist guitar
They are whatever Epiphone put in, stock pickups. I wouldn't worry as much about the pickups for tone shifts, invest in your speaker for that!
@@Electric.Flamingo ok cool
at this price you probably won't have any problem reselling it later on for purchase price, i'm getting one! The only thing that bothers me is that strap button location
That's true. Not really looking to get rid of it any time soon though! Strap buttons on some SGs are a little annoying, I'll give you that.
Grab a suede strap for neck dive , too ; ) a good investment. We got a blue one. pelham blue SG Special.
I have this guitar it’s really nice
They are!
I want to learn guitar, and think I’ll pick this up to try and learn, idk how to play for shit, but I’m gonna try
Nobody starts out knowing how to play. This would be a great starter guitar, I say go for it dude! ⚡️🦩
Hey, I just got into playing the guitar and I was wondering what the song you played for the first demo was?
That's awesome to hear! I don't play anything specific on RUclips that would be copywritten, so it's something I wrote for this video!
@@Electric.Flamingo Oh wow that’s incredible! Great playing!
Hey bro do you think is this a good guitar for someone to learn , I don’t play any guitar in general because it is cheap af looks and sounds good too especially makes me wanna pick up and play it
. !!
It's perfect for someone to learn on!
@@Electric.Flamingo thank you :)
SGs are some of the most comfortable guitars to sit with, in my opinion. Thin body, double cut away, the works! ⚡️🦩
SGs are the most comfortable guitars for both sitting AND standing, in my experience.
I have another question is it possible if I replace the pick-up covers and put the chrome Gibson looking ones if you know what I mean
I know what you mean, you shouldn't have any problems swapping those out with any covered pickup!
@@Electric.Flamingo thanks
We gotta be smart together and make smart decisions with our money. Something tells me companies capitalize on our “stupidity”. 199$ is more fair than 1960-70 whatever how old 5,000-20,000 guitar. Than again if you have the money you have the money.
Great vid. Question...does this SG still have the dreaded neck dive even with the strap button on the neck plate??
Not as bad, believe it or not. I think it offers a bit more counterbalance and the fact that the neck isn't super heavy to begin with, it's already pretty balanced.
@@Electric.Flamingo good to know. Appreciate the feedback. Was thinking of picking one up for a mod guitar
It would be a great mod platform!
yep.
A wide suede/leather strap will remedy it, but yes, all SGs have significant neck dive. It's even worse on the better ones because the bodies are thinner and lighter, but damn they are comfortable and great guitars to play!
I'm only getting one of these at the moment cause my mom won't spend anymore than 200 something but once I get a job and stuff I'll buy a better one
This will most certainly get you by until you save some money up! ⚡️🦩
@@Electric.Flamingo i just have to wait till we get my Id and stuff so I can get a job I'm just gonna try and find a decent paying online job it'll make getting the money some what quicker if it pays decent
@@saibakookami best of luck to you! I hope everything ends up working out and you find a good fit!
Ik this might be a really stupid question lol but does it come with an AMP?
Not a dumb question! There may be a starter pack that has an amp and a bag and stuff with it, but if you go and just but the guitar itself, it does not come with an amp or anything.
@@Electric.Flamingo oh ok thank you 😊
would you recommend this or the ibanez gio for a beginner guitar?
Are they making these with black binding now?
Based on my research and to my knowledge, no they are not.
@@Electric.Flamingo Thanx for your response 🤘🏼
@@Electric.Flamingo I finally purchased this guitar lol. Should be here next week sometime. I was going to get the Firefly SG style but the purchasing process through Guitars Garden seems SUPER SKETCHY. So I canceled my order and went with a company I can trust. Plus the purchase from Musicians Friend gave me a $15 credit. So I'll probably be getting strings with that when needed.
Hell yeah! Sounds like you got a good deal out of the whole thing!
@@Electric.Flamingo Man! I'm hoping you can help me. Is it just me or does the bridge of this guitar sit lower than more expensive SG'S? If so is the neck shorter too? I'm hoping not because I plan on getting a replacement neck. 😬
It’s not worth it…if you keep it stock. Change the pickups and you’re solid.
Might consider changing the tuners too, they can be very hit or miss at this price point!
I have one of these but I have dust all under the strings on the body can you help ?
You may need a string change, but I would just wipe the dust off. If I'm understanding you correctly.
@@Electric.Flamingo this is probably me just being very picky 😅. The dust gets under the strings in between the pickups
That's going to happen with any guitar. Just clean it off when you change strings or run a microfiber cloth underneath the strings and you should be good!
Might just be tough enough
🦩
Stainless steel frets??
No, not on this model.
do you know what kind of tuners those are?
They are not branded or anything, just basic tuners.
@@Electric.Flamingo I meant to ask how do they go on the guitar
These are screwed to the back of the headstock and bolted down at the pegs at the top. Not vintage styled.
does this have neck dive?
No more or less than any other SG, I would say.
I'm a beginner, and Looking for a guitar under 200$. Is this a good pick? Or is there any other guitar in this price range that is better?
Can't go wrong with this. My only advice would be to get a set up done on it. They aren't expensive, but it will make the playing experience so much better! ⚡🦩
@@Electric.Flamingo Thanks for replying. I'll try to get a set up done on it. First I just want to see If I can actually play the guitar

I Wanna Buy A Good Guitar But I Don't Know Which One, I Like Epiphone Sg Special Ve And Ibanez RG Gio Series GRG121DX
@@Electric.Flamingo um my music style is like a hybrid of thrash, death and rock so which one
@@vray6062 i would say the Ibanez would be better for those styles.
