Super Metroid, fusion, and prime 1 & 2 have some of the best atmospheric and catchy OST’s in video game history. Especially the Prime games, to this day I’ve never experienced a more unique music style for a game soundtrack
When I first started watching your videos 1-2 years ago I only had a vague idea of what you were talking about, and now I am realising that I perfectly understand all the music theory concepts you explain. Your chanel was definitely a factor for me getting an interest in understanding music theory in the recent years.
One thing I like about Super Metroid is how restrained it is with remixes from previous games. Other than Jingles and the title screen, I think all we get is that faint melody from the original Tourian. Samus Returns really could’ve learned from that. We’re not on Zebes, you don’t have to call back for the sake of it, guys.
Hell yes, this was my first SNES video game and major reason I became video game creature artist. Shame I just missed the stream, great to see you react to it!
8:46 Just watching this for the first time. I always assumed when it would take me noodling around on my instrument to figure out notes that it meant I was unproficient in some way. See a professional -- and a music teacher no less! -- go from listening through singing and noodling around to get the notes is incredibly reassuring! I've been an on-and-off amateur for years and this makes me want to get back into an "on" phase!
I'll always feel a little melancholy listening to Maridia Swampy Caverns. Years back I was an active member of the OCReMix community, and around the time that Harmony of a Hunter was released we got some terrible news. One of the contributing artists, Avien, had died in a boating accident not long after finishing his submission; the album now stands as a memorial to an individual that, while I never know him personally, was a good friend of the community... Even so, he will be missed.
Thank you for the content! One of these days, Dan! I will catch you live!! But as for the VOD: 43:30 - As soon as I saw that you're covering Super Metroid, I immediately thought: "Can't wait for The Jungle Floor reaction" and noticed everyone agree that it's a banger. I recommend ToxicXEternity's cover of the Jungle Floor here on RUclips! It's an AMAZING cover! By the way, Zebes is pronounced "Zeb-iss" lol Edit: YOU JUST BLEW MY MIND WITH YOUR ACCOMPANYING MELODY! That was SO GOOD!
The king ❤'d my comment! So I can't SuperChat right now because I can't afford it. BUT! If no one has recommended the Metroid Prime OST (maybe even the whole trilogy), here is my pseudo-vote for that one! I was working out while watching, so idk if it was mentioned during this live, lol
39:45 Item Room Ambience: This is literaly the sound of machines doing stuff, so you are supppposed to imagine fans, dial up modems, electrical buzzing and harddrives hacking. Is it music? It becomes music, just like anything can, walking through a factory can sound musical at times, but usually not intentionally. 1:57:03 Brinstar [Melee] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: I almost hate it, it's too happy, for half the song.
This is my favorite game. Also this episode in particular I found your commentary to be interesting and engaging more than usual. Loved the style this time.
The cool part about the Space Pirate theme is how it factors into the adventure. You go down these empty shafts and halls, collect your first upgrade, and suddenly some eyeball looking thing scans you. You think, “Huh, that was weird, but it didn’t hurt me. Guess it wasn’t important.” Then, you exit the room, and the space pirates are just crawling all over those halls ready to meet you, and the music bursts through the quiet ambience you’ve been getting used to while delivering this tense, sinister energy.
Definitely Excited for a possible Fusion OST Reaction after this. Most enjoyable to see you break down elements of one of my personal favorite Nostalgic Soundtracks!
Always loved the atmosphere of this soundtrack, definitely one of the best SNES games ever made and the music amplifies the dark, foreboding atmosphere.
A lot (not all) of the "1 to flat 2"s were really "5 to flat 6"s or "2 to flat 3"s. I think "half step interval" would be a better way to call the motif.
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but in addition to Fusion, Prime 1 and 2, and some select songs from Prime 3, I also highly recommend AM2R's soundtrack. It's a fan remake of Metroid 2 that may as well be official, and the music is just incredible. Take it from a lifelong Metroid fan, it's worth the look.
Samus Returns' OST is critically underrated! Mighta helped if the areas had names so people could search for em but I made a playlist of my favorites :)
This really makes me want to see you react to other Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games. I know you already did EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Final Fantasy VI, and now Super Metroid, but there's so much great SNES music out there to check out! It'll likely be a while, but I hope you get around to these eventually: -Actraiser -Axeley -Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest -Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble -F-Zero -Kirby's Dream Land 3 -Kirby Super Star -The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past -Mega Man X -Secret of Mana (which I think we might be close to doing) -Star Fox -Super Castlevania IV -Super Mario All-Stars -Super Mario Kart -Super Mario World -Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2
I have been a fan of your channel since I discovered your OMORI OST reaction and I notice that your current format with these live streams is different compared to when you first started doing your reactions. Do you plan on revisiting some of the first games you reacted to? I would love to hear your thoughts on OMORI's tunes with your current explanations and demonstrations.
Oh no! he listened the iteration of brimstar of smash Ultimate. To hear the full version they should have given him the ACTUAL in game Melee iteration. Yikes
I feel that Metroid Fusion did the escape theme better. I like Super Metroid, and it had a good OST for its time, but one thing that I wish they hadn't done was simply re-used the boss music and put sirens ontop of it. Fusion's 'escape' (not really escape, but it's a similar style piece) was really cool, esp. with how much better the GBA could mimic voices via sampling. "FIVE minutes to main boiler explosion" ... "FOUR minutes to main boiler explosion" ... and just how much ground you had to cover and all of those stupid steam vents knocking you back as you try to make jumps and not fall into lava... "TWO minutes to main boiler explosion" ...
One of the things i think you might be doing is trying too hard to find the chords by looking at the individual 'instruments' Remember, SNES may have had more music ability than NES, but it was still limited compared to later. Some of the best tracks really get into chord identity across mutiple instruments, some of which are at different rythms but have a root note for their phrase/sub phrase that completes the chord.
9:40 - in music? You have no appreciation for BASS. BASS is the BASS of all music. You cannot build good music without a good BASS. This video... Davie504 NOT APPROVED.

This ost is a masterpiece. Atmospheric, moody, dramatic, funky in the Overgrowth’s(Jungle) case, it’s magnificent
“He represents the devil”
Ridley in a high pitched New Jersey accent: I mean… he’s not wrong. I got devilish charm

Much respect for mentioning fusion. It usually never gets the credit it deserves.

Item room ambiance is not only music, it’s quoting the item room music from the original metroid.
the tapping sound in the Norfair (ridley's Lair) track is the same timed sequence you have to use for successful Bomb Jumping.

I don't know what Rubberman was talking about in saying that Super Metroid wasn't what you'd expect from Nintendo back in the 90s. It absolutely was.
Takes like that are always weird to me. Nintendo is more than just Mario, and even that franchise has more atmospheric themes.
