- Finally able to get out on a Harley Davidson Sportster S for 2023 and see how good it will be for street riding and if it is the kind of bike that I would go for! And what a surprise it was with all that power…Big thanks to Reading H-D for the ride.

Maybe one ride is not enough, I've had mine 5 months and no problems. Loved the look that's what attracted me to the bike.
Thanks Alf I enjoyed hearing your thoughts.
I can dig the Sportster S (unlike the Nightster) but I'd need to tidy up those panels which make it look a bit "3D printed". Thunderbike have done some great looking customs for example. Yes the splash guard thing H-D makes for the rear would be a must in the rain!
I kinda like the fat front tyre, granted it is pretty extreme but I think it's a bit of a nod to old beauties like the WLA and post-war bobbers. The handling however sounds like more of a sticking point for a Sportster, especially one with an "S" in its model name.
Takes a lot of getting used to and tons of adjustment, I've definitely found that if I'm not leaning hard in corners it's not as nimble but it still goes
"When you want to turn the bike, it's not so good." Too funny.
Once again alf a good and honest review of this bike
Do enjoy your reviews cheers mate
Thanks so much
Heavy steering would be from the higher rotational inertia of a heavier front wheel/tire. Going to a skinnier wheel/tire but same diameter would reduce the rotational inertia and make the steering lighter and the bike more agile. Also it looks like there is a bit too much rake on the front end. The bike's front wheel is a 4.5x17. I think a 3.5x17 or a 3.5x16 with a steeper rake would make the bike handle better. The rear gas tank is under the seat: this lowers the center of gravity of the bike and having the gas tank in that location greatly improves handling. Other bikes which have this is the Honda Goldwing and the Indian FTR.
As far as looks is concerned, I think tucking the radiator under the seat and putting some air scoops with fans and vent screens to protect them would give the bike a cleaner look. The late John Britten did this on his superbikes (the V1000) back around 1990. (That bike produced 166 HP and weighed in at 303 lbs. It had a 60 degree water cooled V-Twin with 4 valves per cylinder and 2 injectors per cylinder and it had overhead cams)
Love my sportster s, yes a bit of a bone shaker but you do get used to the steering with that fat front tyre. I get through the twisties just fine. First ride was the same as your thoughts. I have tbr exhaust, handle bar risers and its a great fit for me being a smaller rider even with the forward controls. Better handling than any other harley for sure.
I love mine too. I have completely lost interest in all other sports type bikes since I got it. I can’t get enough of riding this thing.
Sounds similar to that sporty gal in the club at 0100, worth a spin, though not relationship material.
😂
The staples under the front seat digs into the tank and chips the paint
Hey men ! Thanks for share your video , question : it’s a cover you used to match the color on the exhaust? From factory comes like a silver right ? If they are a cover what brand and model do you used ? Thanks
Is there ever a H-D that’s the full package out the box ? Enjoyed the last couple of reviews.. keep it up if poss
I’m honestly surprised by how far over I can get on my 23 Fat Bob and I haven’t even scraped a peg yet. I love the fat front tire and how it absorbs bumps or small pot holes. Just needs a 4 gallon tank to even the way I like to ride with the distance I want to ride.
I totally agree with you, I will also add that the suspension is soooo bad, it almost break my back when I mistakenly hit a small pothole, I tried to adjust it but it’s useless, in my opinion it’s the most uncomfortable bike I test ride so far. Sadly
I don't understand why the Factory put that huge tire on a "sport bike".
Remember HARLEY Davidson never comes complete package. You have to customise.
I genuinely don't critique the opinion of anyone test riding this bike for the first time because I took two hour long test rides to go through everything and make sure I could live with this motorcycle befor buying. I still wasn't 100% sure as you certainly see the limitations immediately, but you need the time on the bike to understand how you can work around that, and to dispel some of the first impressions. I genuinely love riding mine, and I am very happy with the purchase. Its over 20kmh faster through the same corners than any other Harley model I have owned or tested, and whilst that front tire does require a mental adjustment, you can throw it around like a sportsbike (with the limitation of a 34 degree lean angle!!). My concern about the single front disc brake dissapeared very quickly, as the Brembo braking system is good quality, and the brakes work very well. The suspension takes a lot of setting up, but its fully adjustable front and rear, and whilst you will never have a cushioned ride its not uncomfortable except on the worst roads. The engine is the star. Whilst it is the 1250 Rev Max unit, it is internally different to the Pan America as its tuned and calibrated to produce greater torque lower in the rev range. The one negative is the tank capacity and range so frequent fuel stops become part of daily riding!.
What miles are you getting from the tank? I’m considering this bike and would be interested to know please.
@@PaulBilton it greatly depends on your right wrist, and what mode you ride in!!. In Road mode, with a normal mix of riding, you can get up to 60mpg. Change to Sport mode, or on a long fast journey on the motorway/highway and that mileage will go down. It’s a small fuel tank on a bike with a powerful engine. Unless you live in a country where gas stations are scarce I would look beyond this fact about this bike because it’s a joy to ride.
@@peterconnell3162 so what have you managed to get in total from a tank? Thanks for the response
@@PaulBilton I don’t normally push it to test the total tank range, and I am not someone that keeps a log of mileage and fill up’s. In kilometers I put in about 8liters of fuel for 160kms travelled, but I normally fill up at about 130kms and that will show tank range remaining of up to 70kms. The other day I drained a tank to the last 40kms range in 120kms of riding on the motorway at high speed (130-150kph), but on the way back (120-140kph) I had over 80kms remaining. Different days, different atmospherics, different traffic, etc. If tank range is the most important factor for you, my advice is don’t buy this bike!!. The petrol tank is just a hat for the air filter!, but the Sportsters across every generation have always had small petrol tanks. I sold a Harley Touring bike to buy the Sportster S, and in the beginning it was frustrating to fuel up almost on every ride, but you get used to it, and I have toured on this bike in a group and frankly the frequent stops for my fuel needs did not annoy anyone!.
Will the fat bob and the fat boy have similar issues I think it's a good looking bike and I think you'll get used to it in the bends
Would switching out the front tire help the handling?
perhaps some
It's not fair, you're used to take the sport glide for a ride ;) nothing compaired to that!!
Nice review Rev, shame they put the fatter tyre on and reduced the handling. And that is a massive gap between the rear tyre and the fender. It's like they brought out the new design without understanding what the Sportster riders wanted/needed.
Exactly
I’m in agreement with the handling after riding one. The handlebars seemed too low and narrow, wonder if changing out the bars would help any.
I tried the Sportster S from Guildford Harley. I found the seating position awful, too far forward on the pegs and too far forward on the bars, not enough support from the seat. I couldn’t stand riding more than 65 as I felt I was being pulled off. I was OK with the handling and the engine is fabulous. Just wish they’d bring something out that is more cruiser like with that engine. I now ride a 114 Fat Bob but the test ride was on a 131ci conversion. Fabulous.
I love the bikes aesthetic. And it gets a lot of things right. But Harley needs to make a modern xr1200 out of this bike. Lift the suspension another inch or two, mids or rear set pegs standard, thiner front tire and dual disc brakes.
Would make this sportster a real sporting machine. Harley should take a note from Indians “2022+” ftr1200
😊👍
Thunderbike have nice rims for it $$
Nice review alf, front tyre too fat, that's way it wouldn't handle,no we're as good as FTR,regards mike
Start engin staaaaart .....
Just like the V-Rod this is not a Harley, even if it says so on the fuel tank 🤣
That's why they can't sell them😢
Sometimes I wonder if the people who designed it even ride motorcycles at all.
It’s a complete shame and honestly it’s embarrassing that Harley Davidson can’t seem to build a modern, performance oriented, sportster worthy of the damn name!!! This bike looks like it came from a cartoon, and the nightster bike just doesn’t deliver the ponies it should, being the smaller engine. If they had combined the two, they would be a lot closer. As it stands, Honda still produces the best modern sportster on the road today when looking at performance, reliability, and value, in the rebel 11oo. It’s down right embarrassing!!!
This bike will eat the Honda 1100 alive. The Honda is more comfortable but that's it.
@@brianwallace2628 Are you talking to me? Cause I never said the rebel 11oo was faster than the S. I said it’s a better “modern sportster” than anything Harley makes. The S looks like it came from a comic book. If “fast” is what makes the better bike, then you’re looking at the wrong category of motorcycle. Try an H2.
Like I said, If Harley had put that 1250 in the nightmare bike, then they would have something I would be interested in! As it stands, when comparing price, value, performance, features, looks, handling, reliability, the rebel 11oo is the best modern sportster being built today.

This is one of the ugliest bikes HD ever made! Also, you cannot carry a passenger, no stud is going to buy a bike that he cannot take his women for a ride??? The youth cannot afford this bike and its just not practical. Finally, nobody at the local HD dealership pays any attention to this model on the floor. Everyone ignores this bike, no visual appeal !!!!
