    I’m so glad Broad River Rd interchange especially right at the Circle K gas station. Hopefully Columbia area drivers understand the traffic flow and causing no wrecks after all this is done. As a resident of Columbia all of my life. I saw the population grew over the decades. It just started getting really bad in the 90’s especially the growth of Harbison area with opening of Columbiana Centre.

    The diverging diamond interchange will do wonders for traffic flow on Broad River Rd & eliminate a dangerous bottleneck that is always tedious to drive through, & not just at rush hour. It is easy to see how it will improve vehicular safety as well. But these type of interchanges, both the DDI & SPUI (or "bowtie"), are notorious for being unfriendly & dangerous for pedestrians & cyclists. It's an obviously dangerous place for them in its present state. But I'm curious as to what improvements or safety considerations are being done for these road users?

    This is 30 years too late. This is a lot of brouhaha for an area of the city that is dying a slow, painful death. The problem has always been the shared right lane for I-20 West and the exit for I-26 West. They've already solved the problem by making an exit only lane for I-26 West from I-20 West.

      I agree with the decades too late. This should’ve been constructed and completed when I was in 2000s-2010s but they were most focused on Greenville/Spartanburg area for the Gateway Project. It’s going to take 5 years (fully completed by the end of 2029). Yes, our interstates are outdated (1956). It’s going to take awhile to modernize it. It’s our own fault because before 2019, residents were against it due to how much property the SCDOT. We are going to see significant changes especially when the Phase construction for I-20/I-26 aka Malfunction Junction. This Phase is trying to ease the congestion on Broad River Rd in both directions and exit ramp that caused the back up mostly past exits as far back to Farrow Rd. I lived in Columbia all my life and saw the population growth started in the 90’s since they started economic development with Columbiana Centre/Harbison area. This is why they widen I-20 in this area to create collector disturbor ramp or cd ramp for I-20 WB to Augusta and I-26 WB to Spartanburg. To ease the congestion that been dealing with for decades. This Phase made a major milestone this past weekend (Friday night) with the opening on New Broad River Rd bridge. Now they are about to start working on the old Broad River Rd to modernize it; hopefully to construct the bridge for cd ramp to I-20/I-26 for those coming from Broad River Road both sides to get on interstate. To make it easier left turns to ease congestion and wait time at the light especially during rush hr. That will see a lower percentage of car wrecks at both lights on this bridge

      EXACTLY. Should have been done all of this. And these Politicians let Greenville grow before Columbia because they are so stubborn and want to keep all the money

    All they are doing with this diamond design is shift the traffic lights few meters into the intersection instead of right at the exit of the highway. It does not create a free flow of traffic which these intersections need. Also pedestrians will have to stop all traffic into the intersection with this new design in order to cross.

    • @sodacitynative1983

      I have to disagree. Lexington Medical Center exit is a perfect example Diamond design. Traffic don’t back up like it use to before they change it to what it is now. Look at Broad River Rd exit ramp on I-20 west was constructed and completed a few years ago in a long 2 to 4 lanes ramp to get onto Broad River Rd despite the fix, the traffic from that light on Broad River Rd back up on 20. Don’t forget drivers use to sit in the intersection especially the left turning lane on Broad River to get on I-20 used to caused problem that intersection. Also bad wreck happened at that intersection multiple times. So the Diamond design. The pedestrian are not going stop the traffic. Its going to be way better the pedestrians crossing especially you turning onto I-20 East ramp right now. Don’t forget the traffic lights are timed when vehicles headlights and running over the sensors will have the traffic flow way better than a normal intersection during rush hours in this area.

      @@sodacitynative1983 twice this week as I exited from Bush river into I-26 going towards the exit of Lexington hospital and I sat in that new 0.7mile stretch they made to the exit for about 23 mins before I reached the stop sign to turn right I remembered your comment. You should try it around 3pm sometime. That whole stretch they added to that exit is an indication that the diamond design failed for that intersection.

    Still gonna be a traffic jam. Its works if the goal was to get on 20 during rush hour. Its not, more people are trying to go straight rather turn off to 20

    • @poloregal

      It will help trying to get on 26 and keep the traffic flowing. That’s the biggest issue. they’re creating 1 more lane

      Modernization of the inter junction is long overdue. The major part of the construction is malfunction junction aka 4 loops

  • @davewechter1620
    @davewechter1620 2 года назад

    I don't get the diamonds. Traffic is made to cross oncoming traffic when it could simply go straight through the exchange.

      These are becoming more common. You can see some north of Charlotte in the Davidson/Cornelius area. It makes traffic flowing on the interstate not have to stop as much. You will always stop at one of the lights, but you shouldn't have to stop as much or for as long.

      Diamond intersection keep the traffic flowing way better than current intersections. I drive in that area on a regular basis. I hate it during the morning and evening. Look at Lexington Medical Center exit has a Diamond. Before then it used to back up onto I-26. Traffic congestion always been a problem on Broad River Rd and I-20. They did construction on Broad River Rd exit ramp to four lanes a few years ago and it still back up onto I-20 that add on to the congestion from malfunction junction. So bad that the congestion be back for miles (past Monticello Rd exit).

      @@sodacitynative1983 I have seen in other countries where that diamond design is avoided by doing an underpass to keep the traffic flowing. Adding more red lights to traffic is never a good idea. it will create congestion at some point. Lexington medical intersection is not that great during rush hour especially if you're coming from I-26 and wanting to turn right. Traffic is stopped sometimes all the way to the highway.

    • @sodacitynative1983
      @sodacitynative1983 Год назад

      This is the amount of traffic lights in the visualization that have on Broad River Rd, Trust me i drive in that area on a daily basis. This design is more safer and keep the traffic flowing especially the exit ramp from I-20 west is not going to back up on I-20. That’s a long exiting ramp
