  • Visiting the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum at Dulles International IAD airport is an awesome day trip. You can fly in into this class bravo airport and they have a fee shuttle bus to take you to the museum. Dulles - IAD is a large bravo airport that gets very busy,… but you can still do this and it is great for building your experience in flying into busier airports and busier airspace. A couple things before you go:
Gas is expensive... ~ $8.00 a gallon. If you don’t buy gas they’ll charge you handling fees. Either way it is worth the trip.
Even if you are a VFR pilot know your waypoints as you approach. You can file IFR into Dulles , that may make it easier, or you can get flight following but familiarize yourself with the waypoints, the final approach fixes around the airport and also know what runways they are landing and departing from. Dulles has a pretty long and large and complicated taxiway system and it caught me off guard when we are leaving and I had just about the strangest departure I have ever had… but that will be another video.
The main thing, Don’t be afraid of doing this trip- they are very accommodating to GA aircraft but you must be on top of your game. It really is a cool day trip.
Yes! I bought an airplane! This program has some initial numbers and breaks down the monthly expenses. Owning an airplane can be affordable... but the upgrades.... That is what will get me. Watch this program to find out what ownership costs.
Have you always wanted to learn how to fly but now you are over 50? Get out there and start and learn! There are so many people in there 50's and 60's who are just starting to fly so what are you waiting for?

Quick note for VFR pilots, if you filling VFR flight following it makes things easier for approach if you have also files a SFRA plan from your entry gate. If you're flying for the first time call the flight plan in and they will help you figure out what gate you are going to be flying through, they are also on the terminal and section maps for DC. You are also required to take the SFRA training at the FAA website. Have fun!! I'm based out of KHWY.

Would be so much cooler if the Air and Space Museum Annex had their own transient ramp! Also, Dulles in inside the DC SFRA and requires the special online course and certificate, right?

Yes - take the online training at faa.gov and then you need to fill out all your security paperwork through Department of Homeland Security.
