    Congrats on getting this train I will point out that the observation car is facing the wrong way probably needs a new coupler on the other end which are very easy to replace

      Correct the coupler wasn’t on the other end so I just rolled with it. Then switched it.. lol! I should have switched it before I ran it.. 🚂

    The switch box is just a safe way to carry ppower to the step down transformer bolted to the end. Probably 115 volts AC in 10 to 15 volts AC out. Older Lionel sets used 10 to 15 VAC.

      Thanks for the help! After reviewing this funny gadget we believe it to be a ‘one flip start’ for say the tree lights and train at the same time. That way one can literally just walk into the room, flip the switch and everything comes one at once!

    Nice video. Hugh had great taste. I purchased this same set (The Royal Blue) myself around 1990. There were additional cars available separately which I also purchased to make a lomger train. There was a Royal Blue coach, combine, full baggage car, and observation. I still have them all.

    I enjoyed this story! My grandmother Alpha Engle was college room mates and best friends with Hugh Hefner's mother Grace. She kept that a secret to her own children, but when I had a private visit with her in Lincoln NE when I was 20 in June 1981 she told all, but I felt it was confidential and didn't tell anybody. I'm now sure that last trip to visit my grandmother Alpha was orchestrated by Grace and likely make use of its new personal security service of Playboy. I was picked up by a taxi with no identifiable logos on it, with what looked like fresh paint. It looked to me like a movie prop. The windows were totally black and looked like a painted texture. As we drove they got lighter! I read there was new LCD technology for doing such things at about $10,000 a window!
    I'd come by train from Washington D.C. because I was interested in them. I later came up with the term Rail-Trail when a volunteer with the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail in Bethesda MD to mean a bicycle path that precisely uses the well maintained alignment of freight railroad main track. The Rails to Trails Conservancy picked up the term and pushed it out all over the world. Before that Rail-Trail term a lot of railroad corridors were seen as real estate to run a path any which way.
    I asked about the toys grandmother Alpha had gotten from Grace and given to my me when I was about 4. She said that Grace said that Christy and David had so many toys they'd never miss some and just graded a few and gave them to my grandmother Alpha. I don't think Christy and David would have seen it that way. I doubt they remember it now, but they might. They were about six years or more older than me. Well that what happened to those toys . . .

    Awesome video I love the story of the train in the steam engine and the locomotive. It's really neat. You have a piece of history. Keep it in really good condition. I think that engine may have smoke.

    That controller is literally a thermostat or doorbell transformer “piggybacked” off a single throw light switch. You probably have a similar setup on your house’s HVAC unit. Old school model train throttles were literally just a transformer with a rheostat attached (just like a dimmer switch on a light). What you have is a homemade “power source” for this train set.

    • @TRAINBUILDER
      @TRAINBUILDER  7 месяцев назад +1

      Bingo! That seems to be the verdict here in this “mystery controller” case..!! Thanks for the help!!

    That would be a Christmas Tree Train controller. flip the switch the train goes around the tree and when your done watching the train go round flip it off. set to go one speed and nothing more. Probably why the gear ain't stripped is cause of that magic little box.

    • @TRAINBUILDER
      @TRAINBUILDER  8 месяцев назад +1
