Shagbark Hickory trees provide Summer roosts for the endangered Indiana Bat and nesting for the Brown Creeper bird.

Coincidently, I met my district Forester today to walk a stand of timber, learned so much, TSI can be very subjective but is so necessary. The Forester will be writing up a plan so that we can apply for cost share so that the work can be performed this winter.

Always appreciate these tips. I did my first prescribed fire on my property in April. What a difference! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I see you do and talk about hack and squirt a lot. Can you talk about what advantages there are to that method versus chainsaw?

It's much faster and less expensive to apply. It's also much safer than using a chainsaw.

Curious if there is a risk of the herbicide translocating to the oaks being so close? Probably slim chance but..

Several research projects and lots of experience show that when used properly, translocation of herbicides between trees is rare - especially between different species.

I've always heard hickory leaves are not a preferred forage for deer, yet the deer in my area WONT leave the small hickory alone. I'm trying to restore forest on my property. A diverse mixe of trees is always a good idea. Cutting 2 hickory trees will not suddenly make that oak start sprouting limbs quickly. That's take decades, but those 2 hickory took decades to get where they were, I say leavened be.

Wondering where/who you heard this from? Please listen to the Professionals that are educated in wildlife & forestry management. If your really interested in this stuff, do some research on The Practice Of Silvicultural pertaining to Forest Management and the benefits of such to the health of forests & wildlife.
Great presentation as always Dr. Woods. From an old Registered Forester.

It's amazing how fast trees respond to the sun's energy. Trees that are crowded and have small crowns can never improve and will certainly decline in health over time. Most timber stands on private land are way to thick and declining in health. This is sad to watch our forest decline.

Arsenal AC works good. I use a mixture of 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC.
