I originally watched the video to find out which sound effects were important and which ones could be skipped in a shmup (like enemy taking damage but not dying apparently), but it turns out it will help me more on my other project in PICO-8. It uses its own synthetizer, but the Dissection part will be useful. I didn't expect speed slowdown to reveal the individual notes so clearly, I hope it will work with my Genesis sound samples too!
Making a 16 bit style shoot em up at the moment. Now i'm going to have to get rid of the SFX I ripped from a mega drive game and get to work armed with this knowledge!
Your videos are really well produced and entertaining. It was cool to know about the sound effects, just goes to show the ingenuity and creativity of those early days developers in spite of the restrictions with which they were working.
Thank you very much! 8-bit and 16-bit games are always exciting to look at in terms of how some effects were achieved, oftentimes that's very ingenious and inspiring :)
While I have no desire to make a shmup (well, right now at least), this has me wondering about the applications of this type of sound elsewhere... Sure gets my creative juices flowing! Thanks for the video! Informative and entertaining as always!
For the most accurate arcade style sfx one could use a FM vst instrument to make the base sounds. Also increasing tempo / shortening notes in DAW could be more efficient/(what you get is what you hear) workflow than constantly rendering and speeding up the output sample.
To speed up iteration t's also possible to do the speed-up within Reaper, or use 1/128th notes, etc but I didn't want to get into all that hassle in the video 😅 As for the FM instruments, I recommend the JuiceOPL VSTi, or in Reason one can use Thor's FM oscillators.
Haha it absolutely is if you like Reason’s synths. Fun fact: If you hit [Tab] it flips to the virtual backs where you can manually change the wiring with physically correct dangling cables :)
I just got into Reaper myself and your mini-tutorial is a blessing! Thank you very much! :) Question: in your Rampage post-mortem I saw you switched to Reason. Why did you do it? (or should I ask what was the reason for this change?)
First: Sorry for the late reply! And good question! I prefer Reason when I am planning to utilize the synths and samplers there (I also got a library of drum loops, etc). Accessing them through REAPER is a counter-intuitive as it will launch a "headless" Reason anyway. So I use REAPER when I am doing sound editing, sound design, and/or scoring videos (there's no video feature in Reason) and use Reason mostly for making music and getting inspired. ☺
Splendid video! I hate to ask but I have to: How is your new Post Mortem going? I've seen you participate in the current LD - are you collection fottage for that as well? :)
Thanks, Kevin. And yes, as always I shot a lot of footage and screen recordings and screenshot time lapses for a post mortem video of it. I really need to step up and finish one again! :)
Hey, looking for a good sound microphone for field recording for games and shorts, I see you're a using a tascam but I can't figure out what model it is, care to share some info? Also, would you recommend that specific model or would you go for something different? Thanks in advance
Hey giantSwing, thanks for watching! I've been using my trusty Tascam DR-100 Mk.2 for almost 10 years now and it served me well but should I be looking to buy a recorder today, I would probably go for the Mk.3 but its quality comes at a price. I would suggest a Zoom H5 or H6, especially if you occasionally record guitars.
@@PixelProphecy Damn, thanks for the fast and complete response, will look into those, thanks again, also it was rude of me going straight into the question but I really liked the video and we miss your work! Keep up the good work and thanks again!
@@giantswing3175 Hey no worries, I really appreciate anyone posting topical comments :) There will be a new Ludum Dare post mortem soon so be sure to stick around :)
Wow, I loved this video. Very cool to see the sound design broken down in a way that is easier for people to replicate. Can't wait to use these methods in a future game jam!
@@NeZversSounds For the AdLib OPL sound I use "JuiceOPL", for Roland MT-32 I got "MuntVSTi" (which is basically a wrapper for the MUNT emulator), and PSCPE by Shiru for PC Speaker. :)
I wouldn't have expected that speeding up a tune would do that!
i love that ending bit with the variations on the music lol
Thanks, Miffty! Maybe I find the time to make a video on making Roland MT-32, AdLib and PC Speaker versions of a song 🤔

I appreciate the application of the style of your Ludum Dare Post Mortem videos in a non-Ludum Date Post Mortem video. Nice work!
Thank you.! I guess that's my editorial handwriting then. Glad you found it entertaining, Shay :)

Never thought that those sounds were little melodys! Fantastic video :D
I know, right?! :)
Another great Shmup series to check out is Thunder Force. More so 4. That music was amazing, and the SFX were great.

Looks awesome! I'd like to know what you used and how you made retro sound music, from music producers standpoint.
In short: I used some VSTi in Reaper to emulate each hardware. Though, maybe I could make a video about that as well… 🤔
@@PixelProphecy Do it!
