The History of: The Iraqi Fedayeen Saddam Helmet AKA "Darth Vader" Helmet | Uniform History

- Welcome to 2020, we've got a weird one to kick off the new year. In this one we'll be looking at the strange, confusing and mysterious origins of perhaps one of the most head scratching helmets in modern warfare, the Fedayeen Saddam Helmet.

Really great video! Not much is known or studied about the Iraqi Fedayeen, and this was very informative. I did notice however that two points in your video were incorrect.
1 - The Fedayeen helmet was not made of a kevlar material, but rather a hard plastic. The exact composition is not entirely known, though I believe it is actually a polyethylene fibrous material. As you mentioned, this offers little to no ballistic protection.
2 - Although some Fedayeen insignia's were removed, not all countries required this. The UK was the only union of countries which required Fedayeen Insignia's to be removed. With this, although Fedayeen helmets are extremely hard to find, most US captured helmets are complete with their insignia.
Thanks for posting your video! It was fantastic!!

From what I know, the Darth Vader helm has the same materials as the later variants of the Iraqi M80 helmet, which is corlon. Had South Korea not embargo their steel shipping to Iraq, all M80s and Darth Vader helms would be made of steel.
Y'all might wanna learn more from this underrated youtuber who's the Forgotten Weapons of combat helmets, Mike B.
Here's a vid of the corlon helmet. ruclips.net/video/xO4cP3pWKPs/видео.html
@J A There is no such thing as "nazi stormtrooper". Stormtroopers weren't in WW2 as "stormtroopers".
He said Kevlar-like.

In a another life/parallel universe where he didn't rise to power he might have been an alright guy. Best way to see a true heart of someone is to give them absolute power.
I'm surprised he didn't import troops from Bangkok; then he would have had some Thai Fighters too.

I can only imagine an alternate history where George Lucas peacefully ended the war by giving Uday Hussein a trip to Skywalker Ranch and a minor role as a Separatist Council leader in Attack of the Clones.

But don't he said he hate sands? Why still staying in ME?
I brought one of the Fedayeen helmets home from OIF1. It is in pristine condition with the rubber seal intact. It's one of my prized possessions that's displayed in my home office. Recently, a retired CSM gave me the black jumpsuit that goes with the helmet. The helmet is made similar to a US steel pot helmet liner. These helmets were laying all over the ground when we entered into As Samawah in late March 2003. & I claimed this "novelty hat" on my customs declaration form when I flew home. AIRBORNE!!!!

Anyway , I hope you have no para normal activities going on there
As it is said that war trophies are often haunted due to obvious reasons.
Well I am from Iraq and I say you are lucky to get it
I got one from an Army/Navy store I worked at after getting out of the Marines in 2017. If you can believe it the owner gave it to me as a Christmas gift that year. It's like the Luger for post 9/11 guys lol.
Fuck your marines
"You killed my helmet."
"No, I am your helmet."
"NOOOO"
We never found the death star they were hiding
I’m surprised George Lucas didn’t try to sue him!
The helmet shape has a long history in Europe and Japan...
I’m pretty sure Darth Vader’s armor is based off Samurai armor, I think George even wanted some famous Japanese Samurai actor to play him but he said no because “it’s a waste of my talent to be a cartoon villain for children.” Or something like that.
@@akillerpacman1709 I remembering hearing something about a primary actor for Darth Vader being selected but the guy didnt want to do it because of the hokey nature. I'm fairly certain alec guiness felt the same way but he did it because he wasn't doing much.
A killer Pacman Lucas was actually pretty tolerant when it came to intellectual property.
I must be thinking of Disney then.
1:54 Hey look they even have storm troopers!
I remember seeing a few guys that had come across these when we were in the desert in '03, but I've never, personally, got my hand on any of them. Thanks for the quick history, as this is an interesting subject.
The design of the hands on the crossed swords were made from molds of Saddam Hussein's own hands and scaled up to the massive size for the monument. On the ground below the crossed swords were the helmets of defeated Iranian soldiers. The Iraqi military would march over these helmets to show their superiority over their enemies by stepping on their "heads". At the beginning of this video a photo of the helmets near the base of the monuments forearms cascading down to the ground. Quite a sight to see in person when I was there 2005-2013.
The helmet reminds me less about Darth Vader's helmet and more of the helmet of the Zeon ground forces from Gundam.
That or Cobra Troopers from GI joe
It's ridiculously similar
That was based on a nazi helmet
Bro same
Finally gundam
Poor Rowena. Imagine finding out you're Saddam Hussein's favorite artist.
Hell Yeah
Lotte Lenya was one of Hitler's favorite actresses and singers.

I was wondering about these helmets. I remember watching the war on tv and seeing an Iraqi soldier wearing one and thinking he must of raided a star wars costume lol.

Мустафа иракский No shit, The Iraqi military is as over a million and they deployed between 88,000 and 100,000 soldiers to Kuwait. Kuwait the day before the invasion, after the Jeddah talks, demobilized the military and lowered its alert phase, and the most important aspect is that the entire Kuwaiti military is only 16,000, and a citizen population of 580,000, and the rest of the population are foreigners, while Iraq is only 17 million. Kuwait is a tiny country with a tiny population what the hell do you expect

I brought one of these back from my deployment to Iraq during the invasion. I was in Iraq from March 2003 to Jan 2004. My helmet was found in As Samawah during our battle to capture the river crossing.
I noticed that wearing the iraqi gas mask allowed the use of the helmet. I assumed the front of the helmet was made to accommodate the mask.
Next maybe a video about the East German (GDR) "wide helmet"? I would be very interested in this topic as many of them are still available in huge amounts in military stores or can be found in flee market sales here in East Germany.

These helmets were seen used by Iraqi military as early as the beginning of the Iran/Iraq war in 1980. long before the Fadayeen saddam!
a museum on one of the bases I served on had these helmets in display saying they were indeed inspired by Darth Vader. But I was cautiously skeptical. But, wow. Who would have thought.
A Marine drill instructor put that helmet on one of the recruits while standing watch and told him to not remove it. When another drill instructor from another platoon came into the bay, the reaction was priceless
