I'll never understand mocking people for an injury. I was there when Petr Cech fractured his skull in a match against Reading, I HEARD the collision and knew straight away something horrific happened. My whole perspective snapped from "booooo, he's a goalkeeper that we must beat at all costs, boo" to, "If he gets up from this, his life will never be the same, I just hope he can get up"
There were fans in other stands chanting stuff like "Same old Chelsea, always diving" but they had the benefit of literally not knowing any better until the stretcher came out. I was, unfortunately, in the stand right in front of where it happened and I was just sat there stunned.
I’m shocked that goalies haven’t been mandated to wear soft caps after that. Stephen Hunt played for us (Ipswich) and got booed by a lot of teams but I could never tell if what he did was deliberate
I had a similar perspective change watching Adlene Guediora get injured against my team West Brom. He'd dived a couple of minutes earlier, then went up for a challenge with the keeper and went down holding his stomach. Boos rang around the ground because it didn't look like anything, it turned out he'd broken 2 ribs and punctured a lung
Only made the guy a bigger badaas
@@Alex58399 it seems to just be they only need to wear one if they suffer an injury like what Cech did.
Does anyone remember David Busst?

Idk, there’s absolutely a side I can take here. It’s a player, they got injured, nothing fun about it if we approached it from the mean perspective. Feel bad for the guy, am a fan of the club withered by long-term injuries
All the best to him and Citizens
10:57 He definitely nearly sh*t himself there giving the demonstration which is why he mentioned it a few seconds later.
Best demo I ever seen
I'm 30 and I've had 2 shoulder surgeries, 2 ankle reconstructions, and a knee scope. I "retired" after the second ankle surgery. I'm absolutely terrified to reinjure it, or my shoulder. It's almost like PTSD anytime I feel something off in either one of them I have an anxiety attack that I've done something to them, and I'm going to have to go through that again. Neither of those injuries are as bad as an ACL tear, so I always feel awful for those who suffer them.
Moral of the story : change your Rodri laptop wallpaper to a Zealand laptop wallpaper.
TL;DR - I was a former academy player. Tore a ligament in my left ankle and the other team laughed when I injured myself. Ended my career as I couldn't get surgery due to COVID.
When I was 17, I was a J1-League academy player. One year, I had traveled back to America in the off season to visit my family. (I am half Japanese, but my family migrated to America).
When I was back there, I played in a few games. One of these games, I was tormenting the other team for the entire game. One play, I was 1 on 1 with a center back and my midfielder had the ball. I ran to the left side of the pitch, but the ball came on the other side of where I was facing. I turned, and my right leg gave out and I tripped. I kept my left knee straight, which probably prevented my knee ligaments from getting hurt. Instead, I essentially pushed my ankle into the ground and it completely tore the ligament. I heard a giant "POP!" like a rubber band snapping, and the peroneal tendon snapped out of place, tore the ligament holding it.
The other team just started laughing at me because I fell and tripped without contact.
It was right before COVID times, and when I went back to Japan to get it looked at, they tried conservative tactics at first. Did PT, balance, strength training, flexibility, mobility. The whole mile. Ended up getting another MRI and finally a scheduled surgery (For April 2020). Unless y'all were living in the Mariana Trench, COVID happened and my surgery was canceled, and my team terminated my contract as I couldn't play the same (The tendon would constantly pop out of place if I stepped too hard).
This injury ended my academy and possible professional career. Injuries are no joke.
PS: Hearing about Zealand's knee, my foot is also numb in certain areas. I had finally got surgery in 2023 but having not played in 4 years essentially, I'm no longer at that level where I can get into the professional game. My ankle bone on the outside, numb. The bunion on my large toe, numb. It was both because of the surgery and the cast I had. It really affected my life during recovery as I was trying to study in community college. I ended up failing multiple classes because I couldn't sleep because of the pain. I was scared of taking opioids and tried to make do with Ibuprofen. I only took my hydrocodone twice in 10 weeks. You can imagine what not having sleep or being able to walk without crutches does to a student.
the only people celebrating injuries are people whove never gotten a serious injury themselves or childish weirdos
After seeing Derrick Rose go from youngest MVP and future hall of famer to role player because of an ACL tear is the kinda thing that makes me cringe when people celebrate an injury to an opposing player
Ive torn my acl twice, if i sit with my lega crossed (happens too often as im dumb) it takes a good 90 secods to straighten my knee again afterwards.
Im a united fan and id never dream of celebrating or mocking rodris injury

@yggbeats5759 I don't like walker, but I think I'd actually feel worse for walker than i do for rodri.

I am surprised you have not discussed the reason for the AFC Wimbledon v Newcastle United postponement. After a heavy storm a sinkhole appeared on the pitch. Apparently Wimbledon pumped 10,000 litres of water out of their stadium.
100,000 litres is what I heard
I’ve always thought that, when a player goes down “injured” then it’s fair to kind of mock it UNTIL it becomes apparent it is actually a real injury and not a dive to win a free kick/penalty. At that point, no more mockery, no more banter, no more jokes, it’s all serious and sincere.
Like you, I have had multiple injuries. Torn Achilles Tendon was the worst, Torn Hamstring probably the second worst, and 3 fractured lumbar vertebrae and a herniated disc probably third (or - and I hope I spell it right - my calcanofibular ligament in my ankle), and nothing has been right with them since!
With my ankles, constant pain when I walk, I can’t really get into a squat position either. With my hamstring and fast/explosive movement is instant hot poker like sensation in the area I tore. With my back, stiffness, pain and if I move too quickly I can easily throw it out and be bedridden for days, hell even my shoulder that I dislocated in 2004 is still giving me problems now, 20 years later!
This shit changes you, permanently, so I always feel bad for players (and anyone else) who picks up an injury
Exactly man, thats how it always felt here in Germany too.
We had a similar case even this season. Homegame, opponent gets fouled, it genuinely looked like a dive so people booed the shit outta him.
about 30 seconds in the guy wasnt standing up or properly talking with the ref, medicals were called. The boohing got very quickly very quiet and when the opponent slowly limped off the field he was applauded by most people.

I tore my ACL as well, but playing football while doing a sliding cross (hit the outside goalnet). I didn't really realise what happened, I was just confused why my knee wasn't working properly anymore and I stumbled around on the field for another 5 minutes or so since I didn't want to quit because we only had 11 players that game.
I didn't get any strong meds afterwards though, only paracetamol and ibuprofen, that might be a difference between us and europe.
It's foolish to laugh at another team's misfortune especially when it comes to injuries and bad refereeing decisions because next week, it could be your team.
I don't go on Twitter so I can't speak for the idiots on there but I'm pleased to say that proper Arsenal fans on podcasts and forums are not celebrating Rodri's injury. We are of course wondering what this means for Man City this season because we have to cling on to any advantage that comes our way in the title race but Arsenal fans (the majority who have brains that is) have sympathy for Rodri and wish him well with his recovery.
Thanks for being so candid and who the fuck makes fun of someone's injury. After that Neymar vid you gotta be un fucking hinged to find that funny.
Thank you so much for sharing, Zealand. This was very encouraging but also grounding.

Great video. Makes Danny Ings' story all the more awful yet also more inspirational.
5:33 good to hear you wake up almost every morning!!!
Did you know there is a New version of you, Zealand?
My dad did his ACL decades ago and it haunts him. He can’t watch injuries, he knows whenever it’s an ACL.. it’s painful, especially in cold weather. It’s not nice. He did it while playing football.
I'm much more worried about the way Havertz DESTROYED Rodri in the first 5 seconds of the game. That could cause lingering problems for decades.
I hate Rodri and his stupid tucked shirt but I wish him a quick and successful recovery 🤷♂️
For anyone interested in seeing just how hard this injury is to recover from, Neymar's released videos documenting his ACL recovery process. He's been injured dozens of times (usually relating to two serious injuries in his past) in his career and it's clear that for him this is genuinely different. You can hear him scream in pain lifting weights, look terrified making jumps in obstacle courses, all kinds of things. ACL tears suck, a lot.
Hey Z from New Zealand. I'm a rugby player in real life and played to a decent youth level but now just casual. I've had a couple quite bad concussions, many neck and back cricks and have an ongoing issue with ligaments in my lower left back that will just turn my back into a knot. Bones are able to heal, but ligaments and brains really don't. If you ever experience a major injury playing a sport, you have so much more sympathy for that person. I'd much rather take a broken collarbone than a shoulder dislocation, because at least my collarbone still feels alright on a daily basis. My shoulder has never been the same.
I can’t keep hearing this. I tore mine and it’s so hard to admit it to myself. It sucks and it’s so hard to play the sport but not feeling the same
Zealand must have good insurance 💀

Arsenal fans are so petty just coz Rodri questioned their team's mentality. These antics are just proving his point.
Not Arsenal fans, hardly fans of football that lot
As an arsenal fan i despise fans who celebrate the injuries of other team’s players. We have to realise these are people at the end of the day, people who have their own ambitions and families to take care of. Injuries like these can completely change the trajectory of career’s and legacies so to go out and act like it’s the 4th of July is disgusting in my opinion. In an ideal world i’d like to see my Arsenal take on a fully fit City and see them pull through, versus winning the league due to injury issues or the charges against them
it’s all fun and games until one of your players gets injured. It’s like some of them already forgot what happened in 22/23

They took hamstring with mine. The front part of my knee is also completely numb. I type this while lying in bed and my knee aches all the time. Even after an extra surgery 10 year's later.
An ACL injury is something you shouldn’t even wish on your worst enemy

I will always have sympathy for anybody that has that injury. Thankfully looks like they're treating it better but yeah agree with the change it has on your life
Here to fact-check Zealand:
1. Muscle Atrophy and Weakness
• After a ligament injury, many people are forced to reduce their activity levels or may be immobilized for a while. This inactivity can lead to muscle atrophy (shrinking) and weakness, particularly in the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles.
• As the muscles weaken, they cannot support and stabilize the knee. Physical therapy helps rebuild strength and muscle mass, preventing further complications.
2. Neuromuscular Control and Proprioception Loss
• Ligaments are not only structural stabilizers but also contain nerve receptors that play a role in proprioception - the ability to sense the position and movement of the knee joint.
• When a ligament is torn, these receptors can be damaged, resulting in reduced proprioceptive feedback. Patients might lose their sense of where the knee is in space, making it difficult to control movements accurately.
• Physical therapy includes exercises that retrain these proprioceptive pathways and help the brain “relearn” how to control the knee muscles effectively.
3. Restoring Range of Motion
• Ligament injuries often cause swelling, pain, and stiffness, which can reduce the knee’s range of motion.
• In some cases, scar tissue can form, further limiting flexibility. Without therapy, this can lead to long-term joint stiffness and functional limitations.
• Therapy involves stretching and range-of-motion exercises to ensure the joint can move freely and comfortably again.
4. Correcting Altered Movement Patterns
• After an injury, patients often adopt compensatory movement patterns to protect the knee. These altered patterns can lead to further joint or muscle imbalances and increase the risk of re-injury.
• Physical therapy focuses on correcting these patterns, teaching the patient to move the knee correctly and safely again.
5. Preventing Further Injury
• A torn ligament can increase the risk of additional knee injuries, such as meniscus tears or damage to the remaining intact ligaments.
• Proper rehabilitation strengthens the muscles around the knee and improves joint stability, reducing the likelihood of further injury.
6. Re-establishing Functional Movement
• In severe cases, a ligament tear might require surgical reconstruction. After surgery, the patient may need to relearn basic knee movements such as walking, running, or jumping.
• Physical therapy is tailored to gradually progress from simple tasks to more complex functional movements, such as pivoting or changing direction, depending on the patient’s goals and activity level.
Are we at the point where playing sports is accompanied by entitlement of not getting hurt ?? WTF? WE PLAY WE GET HURT, it’s part of the game. If I can see people play amateur sports, having put in the work to come back from ACLs, we can expect athletes to do so themselves selves. Nobody cares when he will come back, nobody is gonna feel bad for this guy. IT SUCKS we know
I tore my ACL almost a year ago and I’m still recovering (still 6-7 months off full recovery).
The worst physical pain I’ve ever experienced has come from the few days immediately following the injury/surgery, and from rehab itself.
However, the mental pain, anguish, and isolation that comes from not being able to play any sport or do anything fun/athletic (e.g. jump, sprint, turn) is crippling. When you tear your ACL, you may get sympathy for a week or two, then you’re completely alone with it as everyone forgets about you (especially in the futbol world). I genuinely would not wish this on my worst enemy.
Z, fellow ACL tearee here, also got the patella swap. The numbness, the ache every time the weather changes, all of it. I can’t imagine being a professional athlete and having to trust the repair after 9-12 months of torturous PT.
I just had surgery to repair my completely torn ACL. About 1 month into recovery know and this is so true, everything Z just said. I have had multiple elbow surgeries, still have two screws in there, and this is by far the worst recovery I have ever experienced.
Thank you for the insight, I started feeling lightheaded just hearing you talk about it
was mostly arsenal and man u fans mocking his injury. dirty fanbases
The worst people I have met are Arsenal fans so it’s no surprise to me
Rodri is great player. Probably a Balon D'Or (sp) this year and he's stood up for player wellfare. Saying that I remember him absolutely taking Odegaard out in an international match last year. So while I hope he makes a quick and full recovery, and the memes are crass, I find it hard to feel too sorry for the guy.
I blew out my knee a few years back while swimming. Similar recovery experience and has never felt the same, absolutely sucks and id never wish it on anybody.
Anymore Crusader Kings 3 content coming soon?
I totally agree with you on this, although I would add something. Most of what you experienced is pretty typical, not just for ACL tears, but with any major ligament or tendon issue. People who tear their rotator cuff or achilles tendon or any of the 4 major ligaments in their knees have a lot of these same problems, because ligaments and tendons have so much stress on them and heal so slowly compared to things with more bloodflow such as muscles, skin, and organs. The ACL isn't unique in that way.
I always feel bad hearing about these kind of serious injuries, no matter who the person is. No decent human being does feel happy if someone gets hurt. I wish him all the best and I hope he still gets that golden boot.
Feels good not doing actual sports though, never broke, tore or ripped anything and I made to 43 already.
I totally agree with You.I also had ACL surgery last year. The First 3 months after surgery was so tough for me and my knee feel not same as before the tear. Those people who are happy for other peoples injury are absolutely sick.
Another pretty common injury that changes your life forever is a broken nose. I could immediately tell when I saw you for the first time that you probably broke it at least once. And that's before we factor in the chronic breathing and congestion problems some people get from repeated breaks 😶
Im 3r years old and played ice hockey up to a pretty high level in my youth as a goalie, today my hips are totally f’ed up, and I should probably have had surgery to fix em. But the thought of recovery is so overwhelming even as a none athelete, that I’m putting it off for as long as I can. Do your stretches and don’t try for professional sports if you don’t know that’s what you’re gonna be. The body isn’t built for professional sports.
There’s a great irony that the guy who caused the injury, albeit with a tiny bit of contact, shouldn’t really be on a football pitch with the allegations against him
I skateboarded for 5 years in my teens with hemophilia and sprained my ankle so many times I've been limping since my 20's. About a decade ago it started to develop painful episodes that felt like someone rattling a needle inside your ankle ligaments that would come and go in a flash. Apparently that was caused by pieces of bonemarrow in my joint from repetitive trauma. Fun fact: the surgeon I was seeing during this process was the same one that operated on Van Basten's ankles and we had comparable damage... so my 5 year stint of rolling around on a plank did as much damage as 15 years of playing professional football. Point of this story: hemophilia sucks... and also life altering injuries.
no joke, my little brother almost passed out just hearing Zealand talk about what happens when an ACL tears. Had to literally pause the video and change it
As happy as I am that City is loosing their most important player, someone getting injured in sports is not fun.
I don't think singling out a torn ACL and a Concussion as the big injuries to change your life is the right approach here. I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure there are other injuries that do that as well both sports related and non-sports related. Any injury has the potential to last a lifetime, especially if treated poorly or not at all.
I played rugby till I was 17 and I dislocated my knee, I took out my ACL & MPFL at the same time, I don’t think I’ve related to a video more than this. I spent two years waiting for surgery thanks to the virus that shan’t be named and honestly them first two years were much easier than the year and a half after the surgery, the rehab took everything out of me mentally, I struggle with the it physically everyday and will for the rest of my life so for the sake of Rodri you can hope he has an amazing support system around him to not only rehab him but just be there for him and give him the motivation to push through it, truly it is life changing no matter who you are
I blew out my right knee then two years later blew out my left knee and I have never really met anyone else who has put that injury as well as you have. Thank you for making my knees hurt again but I am also very happy you told so many people just what it is like to go through this kind of injury. I will say the thing I hate the most from the injury was having to learn how to dance multiple times again. I love dancing and i know I knew more complex partner dances before blowing out my knees that I will never get back.
Rodri was always a player I disliked, I know he is one of the best in the world but couldnt stand him, but saying that I still wouldnt wish a long term injury on any player, the thing that makes it worse is that he warned people about the increasing workload on players and that this will happen more and more
The relief vs revel comparison is spot on imo. It's normal to feel relief that one of, if not, teh best player in the league right now won't play against you is normal. Though revelling in it isn't so much. In a perfect world we wouldn't have any injuries to any players since all they do is take away from the sport. At the end of the day what has happened is we've learnt that one of the greatest players won't play this season which is pretty sad
His injury was so bad you could literally see his bravery go down by 2
I'm guessing this explains why Varane is retiring at 31. He might still have a few years in him but right after that injury he must feel like all the wind has been taken out of his sails.
