It is quite interesting to note that Manusmriti goes against the core idea of the Rig Veda (which assigned caste solely on the basis of a person's job and not on birth, and also promoted social mobility).... Of course the manusmriti was written by a powerful higher caste man/ committee (most possibly Brahmans) with utter disregard to the Vedas, just to solidify their power and position...

In ancient world there were laws to govern people and I think manu smirithi is one of them... In fact in ancient world priesthood was an important part of the society.. in ancient Egypt the structure of the society was the pharoah's position was in the highest level, then followed by priests, ministers, noble , wealth men and at the bottom level were slaves..similarly in ancient India Brahmins were in the top level followed by kstriyas , vaisiyas and sudras. Infact sudras were equal to slaves. Manu smrity was written during 3 or 2 century b.c that was during the times of sungas..the sungas were Brahmin so may be manu favoured the Brahmins.
