I noticed this a few years ago back when I finally played Halo 2 again because I was tryna get a profile picture based on a level (like my Scarab pic) and was like WOAH. Showed a few of my friends, I'm glad it's becoming more noticed now. :) I also believe every other level picture matches the final in-game look pretty well.

Yeah, this was a neat thing I instantly noticed as a kid. It was obvious to me honestly, and there are many games that have instances like this where pre-release shots are used for level pictures at the time.
Within Halo 2, you'll also find that Midship uses a pre-release level picture.

I think the CRT tvs are to blame for this lol. I dont think we were able to make out that much detail from the small icons. By the time bigger screens came out halo 3 was already out. It probably didnt make a difference since the resolution was so low. Good catch though!

You could play Halo 2 at a higher resolution on the Xbox 360 with HDMI and Halo 2 had been on PC since 2006, presumably with the same mission icons.
