- Next up on Change Notice, #teamteardown takes on the just-announced Google Nest Doorbell, which introduces new Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and a new battery-powered option (whereas the previous model was limited to wired-only configurations).
Former Amazon PDE Chris Li and former Apple PDE Tobias Harrison-Noonan will be diving into Home IoT-specific manufacturing questions like camera placement/seating, potential antenna challenges, battery configurations, and more.

i wanted to see how you pry this thing open. thanks for doing it off camera!
Hey, amazing video and very informative as well. I do have one of those Doorbells. I found out on the Google Nest forum that Google does not supply replacement parts for the cracked/shattered lens. A suspected mounting flaw causes the device to release and hit the ground. Would you be able to say if the lens on this device is some kind of standard? I haven't seen this piece covered in your video, but I believe that any information on it would help the Nest community a lot!
Everything I wanted to see except a teardown of the back which I guess I ill do myself. the little nub doesn't seem to protrude the way it should and thus barely latches on.
Anyone know where to get a replacement bettery for this?
And what you missed?
Replacing the battery? Duh.
Hi, Chris! I like your video, I would like to ask you if you can explain why the doorbell camera only works after mounting it on the base plate?
Good lord is this thorough!
Well I came to watch the back taken off. Thanks for doing it off screen👎
Me too - anyway...Remove the the two small torx screws - then with a thin case opener, fish around the edge where the white plastic meets the back of the unit - there are some tabs but if you gently pry the back will come loose. The back section is inset a bit into the white front housing. Be careful with the wires connecting the back and front pieces.
Me too. Also my T5 screwdriver bits don't fit the screws???
@@peterconrad8416 Thanks for this. I managed to get it off with your help. I had dropped the doorbell on the ground and part of the o ring popped out
@@peterconrad8416 : thanks, mine is still in warranty with stuck latch. So I get a new one for now..But after warranty...I have to try this too (I'm sure it will happen again after x time) :-(
HOW TO DISABLE THE STATUS LIGHT? what leads to snip?
a couple a years ago the user was able to customize the brightness of the status light, anywhere from OFF to BRIGHT. HOWEVER, google tweaked the firmware so that the light is always on when the camera was on. they did this out of privacy concerns.
BUT, i dont want any thief to see an obviously operating cam.
How does the backplate work to turn on the doorbell
Yeah, that really made me wonder what was it that made the doorbell to turn on and without the baseplate its a useless pcs of tech. So whats interesting is that if Chris is able to do a deepdive and find a workaround, I tried but it just moves but no reaction or way to turn it on. It is really a special mechanism
@@isaac976 it's simple, it has a magnet on the plate, and a hall effect sensor inside the device
@@paulbianco1 🤯Amazing!! Where did you get this information?
I'm a 2nd-year college right now and we've decided to use this device for our project, I've learned a lot from this information, I've just subscribed to the channel recently, I look forward to learning more from this channel. It is more complicated than we've thought, on how it was created.
Thanks for the information.
Know the part number for the lens ? I need to replace mine
Is there anywhere you could order these parts? My camera lens broke and want to replace it.
Yeah, would also like to know. Currently looking to replace a broken galss/lens/camera. Anyone knows?
same here. anybody found a solution?
Same here
What's the point of off camera teardown? Christ
OMG it took 10 minutes to actually start taking the device apart
Thanks for the teardwon!
A board level camera module has cost benefit than complete enclosed one, which need to glue & cure the lens holder with sensor board which means manufacturing factory needs glue machine & heating chamber to achieve that rather than just a screwdriver 😄
And they just need to wipe the die surface with Ethanol to remove any potential particulates before cover down the camera holder, which also benefits on sorting convenience.
We usually use enclosed camera module in higher resolution film (no hope board bent by screw)& small room place where is no space to put screws on like smart phone area.
Any ideas for the brand for the board level camera module?
What about the latch button above the USB port? Mine is stuck and I'm trying to figure if I can get it unstuck before taking it apart. It looks like it was missed in this teardown.
My neighbour has the same issue. Did you end up solving the problem?
@@nibblenibblenomnom I RMA'd it to google and they eventually sent a replacement. I eventually took it apart and it's stupid because that latch is epoxied in place so you can't get to it to fix it and you can't replace it because you'd have to replace the whole back piece and that has the QR code.
I'm watching this because I noticed it makes a click sound when the infrared LEDs come on, and I put my finger on the camera lens a few times and heard the click every time suggesting the IRLEDs are controlled by a micro relay switch which seems dumb for a device that is meant to optionally run on battery. Why wouldn't they just use a transistor? Also I've had it since last September, and mine just quit waking on motion last Wednesday.. I have tried everything to trouble shoot this from my phone, I have not taken this thing apart. I have it wired to a doorbell transformer that I installed myself on its own circuit which still works fine. If I press the button it records video. If I go into the home app I can see live video, and if it stand in front of it, it still recognizes me, but it will not wake up and record from any motion anymore. I've played with all the settings, I've turned it off and on, I've turned the event settings off and on and nothing fixes it... Any thoughts?
Can I get a replacement battery for the Battery model or is it something proprietary for the device?
Is it possible to physically turn the image inside the device 90°?
I am not happy with length of "I think" leading to completely wrong conclusion, demonstrating the un-familiarity with electronic design practices in the context of device functionality. Read about the product before presenting opinions. This product has an interesting feature of early zonal motion detection with PIR sensor in low power mode, for waking the camera only when needed to reduce the power. It is patented. The CMOS sensors are coming as chips and assembled on the board as shown - it is a common practice. It would be great if you at least decode the component functionality from markings and reference designators on the board.
P.S. Anyway, it is good that you are doing teardowns, but there are areas for improvement and preparation before the session...
How do you know all this Celsius do you work at Google or create smart doorbells? (*serious question no sarcasm btw)
Having an issue with my release pin on this. It's jammed down and wondering if anyone's done a repair to release the pin. I can't click the camera back into the mount because the release pin and button won't move. Had this thing less than 3 months...
I'm having the same problem right now. Did you get yours fix?
Same problem here, can someone help
Same problem :-(. Glad it is still in warranty and after chatting with Google , I get a replacement one.
Interesting video! Thank you. Is the Google's Nest Hello camera lens the same as this one, the Google Nest Doorbell? I am looking to replace the Google Nest Doorbell camera lens, since it is broken. Anyone? Thanks in advance!
Did you figure this out?
@@elliotbruce4774 Nope, but if anyone can? :-) (found myself a cheaper 2nd hand Nest Hello doorbell, which is in good state)
@@DudeNukem91 can't you year that one down to find out tho, or do you not have it yet?
@@elliotbruce4774 Nah, leaving it in tact currently. Until I know for sure.
But if you look up the tech details btw on the official google suppor page. There are some differences between both lenses. Regarding size. Not quite sure if it really mathers, because it looks marginally different from each other. So might still be doable.
