A simple reason for not wanting so much social time: Being around stupid people is frustrating, often infuriating, and too much of it can make a person misanthropic.

I'm 71, and though I've always loved people, I'm finding fewer and fewer people I can stand. They always seem to come up with crackpot ideas or show no real appreciation for others. And their stupidity in the long run finds ways to either hate me or betray me. It takes a lot of brains to understand true frienship. They wind up being faithful to money instead of sincerity, influence instead of morality.

I try to be kind to others, and value them for who they are. I believe that a person doesn’t have to be a genius, things like loyalty, honesty, sense of humor, work ethic, empathy, and several other traits are more important than being a genius. In fact many geniuses are real jerks! And can be insufferable narcissist! And while I truly believe this, stupid people can get on my nerves in short order! I know better than to argue with them, but after a short time I feel the need to make distance between myself and them. I guess being a genius or a low IQ individual doesn’t mean you’re virtuous or an inconsiderate slob. Neither group is inherently better than the other. However, In this day and time it’s hard to find anyone to share a stimulating conversation with. There is much to be gleaned from talking to yourself.

I have a high IQ. I was urged to try out a club of other "high IQ" people when I went to college. Some of them students. Many of them graduated and in careers. Almost all of them single. I found that they were all insufferable narcissists. They were the single most miserable people I've ever interacted with in my life. It was as if the only thing any of them had going for them was their intelligence and it has to be defended amongst themselves at all costs.
I eventually learned college wasn't for me. I think a lot of it was driven by the fear I would become one of them. I dropped out and worked a blue collar job with some, let's just say, less intelligent people. But they were authentic. They didn't loathe the world. They didn't blame everyone else for their shortcomings. They didn't think they were better than everyone else. And they were actually fun to be around.
What do they say about "it everyone you meet is an asshole?" I wonder if the same goes for someone who keeps running into stupid people.
Quit being a martyr. Nobody cares.

@a9ball1 back then, intelligence was knowing how to use a library to find answers. Smart kids went to the library, and dumb ones to the smoking lounge. The Internet had the potential to be the library, but in corporate hands has become the smoking lounge.

A wise old man once told me in the mirror "
Some believe what they want to believe,
others believe what they are told to believe,
but the wise believe what they see before them".
I argued that what we see may not be reality, it could be just our own perception,
Then I realised I had smoked way to much weed and was talking with my own reflection...

      @robertlawson8572 Month ago +7

Yes, Russell wrote that, in a series of essays published between 1931 - 35 in a US publication. However, W B Yeats wrote (in "The Second Coming " ) "The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity." A similar sentiment, is it not? And written in 1920... I've taken it out of context, of course, the whole poem needs to be read...

    • @robertlawson8572
      @robertlawson8572 Month ago +3

@bobcostas9716 "I would add perhaps that intelligence is amoral"
That is something I learned in the seventies. Drinking in an uncustomarily posh place in a major city... A couple of barristers came in, ( not wearing, but carrying, ) wigs and gowns...
I was alone, bored, but did eavesdrop on their conversation. They'd been adversaries in some case, locally, and were discussing the proceedings as if they'd been playing a chess game...
"When you said XXX, I thought you'd got me, but!..." I listened to a blow by blow account of how things had gone... (They were quite loud)
The rights and wrongs (morality) of the case itself were immaterial, but the way they played, and winning were tremendously important... The accused? Collateral damage, maybe...

A brilliant brain often comes with an ultra-sensitive nervous system. They don't just process logic; they 'absorb' sound, light, and emotions at a much higher intensity. High IQ is like driving a supercar in a narrow alley. Does anyone else feel like intelligence is more of a burden than a gift?

  • @GenXPsychologySimplified

High IQ is often like speaking a language that very few people understand. It’s not arrogance; it’s the loneliness of seeing patterns and risks 10 steps ahead while everyone else is struggling with step one. Has anyone here ever felt the need to 'mask' their intelligence just to fit in

I tried everything I could think of to find where I fit in and what to do to be like everyone else. I found I’m much better as myself and there’s nothing wrong with me as I am. This is the hardest thing to come to terms with as many will belittle you or make you feel alone and like you’re garbage. That’s their jealousy talking. They may see in you what you can’t see and it makes them angry and feel inferior. Never underestimate your abilities. Never give up on yourself. Do this and you will never lose because you are always yourself and that’s what god made you to be. ❤

Most of this video is spot on. Regarding other signs of intelligence not mentioned in the vid, I'm only a perfectionist when I have to spend money buying something expensive. I'm not self-critical, although I deeply recognize my own faults, and did so at a very early age. I just don't beat myself up for them. And I'm never bored, unless I'm watching an Adam Sandler movie or the sport of golf. I can always find something to do, to read, to listen to. Documentaries are my favorite form of shows. According to this video i have a very high IQ. Yet while growing up i did poor in school and was told by parents and grandparents i was dumb.
I joined the Army at 18, made it to Sgt/E-5 within 3 years. Got injured in the line of duty and received a medical discharge. Pursued other employment got injured more. Kept pushing myself to support my family. Now i own a half million dollar house and two vehicles, making more money than i spend. Could a dumb person accomplish this? Probably not. However, if i had such a high IQ i would have been able to accomplish this without destroying my body and mind for life. Intelligence is subjective, IQ is a construct, Life is fluid.

I know plenty of people who are of average IQ but have been successful in businesses they've started. Iq has absolutely nothing with success. In fact it's often a handicap. So called intelligent people usually work for corporations earning a good salary but not spectacular. Also, the covid era convinced me that intelligent people are easily brainwashed and propagandised. They often seem to lack critical thinking abilities whilst people on low skill, low paid jobs are much more awake. Also, often what constitutes an intelligent person is someone who's good at one thing. They are often some of the dumbest people on the planet.

I honestly don't know how accurate this list is, but I do fit every one on it. I've always been treated as odd, different, awkward, irritating, difficult to deal with, and people keep me at arms length; I keep me at arms length...! 😂 I was always made to feel & treated as stupid, I was taken advantage of. It wasn't until I had a breakdown around 6 years ago that I started to understand and learn that it was others that were at fault and to blame, and not me...! I don't know the correlation between this list and autism, but I've learned that I am on the spectrum (Asperger's).

I tested out with an IQ of 168 and was invited to join the Epimetheus Society (top 1% tested) and MENSA (top 2% tested). I opted to join Mensa as it had a higher recognition value and I believed it would look good on my resume. I can't say that it helped. One interviewer even told me he considered it a negative.
I've spent my life trying to pretend I'm not smart. Other people don't tend to like you if you seem to threaten them with being smarter than they are. I learned to stay silent and just go about doing things I think best. Many times against the consensus of 'the group'. "The Group' doesn't take that well. So I don't fit in. I am a loner and I love my time to myself.
I do sleep a lot and I stay up late at night. I seem to get more done at night. I constantly have to make excuses for my upside down circadian rhythms, like I'm doing it on purpose. I get the same 8 hours as everyone else, just at different times. My sister-in-law used to call me 'Sleeping Beauty' when I was a child. Even bought me a t shirt.
No, showing all these characteristics doesn't make me smart, the IQ score shows that. I'm not trying to boast as I did nothing to achieve this intelligence, I was born with it, but only to let you know there is an upside and a downside to everything. Watching this video makes me feel a little better about myself.

Man I felt your comment to my core.
      I turn 56 this month.
I can't count the number of times in my life I've been ostracized from a group or a work project because there was not one other person in the group who understood my process or the intended concept.
It can be demoralizing to your character in later years to be misunderstood because of intelligence.
I so miss the accelerated learning programs in school where we were placed with people operating on similar frequencies.
I felt so much connection with all of them.
Walking into the class I knew I was among my people and immediately felt at home.
I also felt free to chime in to add insight without the trepidation of being targeted or shamed for doing so.

We don't let people into our private circle who don't add anything meaningful. People who only take energy, only talk about the banal and predictable or people who have something mean and negative about them, we keep our distance from them or cut ties. We are usually quite polite to most people. But we see who people really are and the energies they radiate from miles away. But when we do meet individuals with a beautiful, intelligent and exciting personality or it may be enough with an honest goodness and unsophisticated kind aura about them, we see these as rare diamonds. They are our friends and we are very loyal to them.

I wish I could remember everything I've ever looked up (dictionary, encyclopedia, reference book, google, etc). However, I have resigned myself to deciding that, if I've had to look something up repeatedly, then apparently I don't really care about...otherwise, I would remember it! I CANNOT remember the definition of the word 'teleology' and its iterations...I had a professor who was fond of using it, and I had to look it up every time...as I just did again now!...

@BKNeifert I think the point is that anyone with a very high IQ would not be concerned with IQ as a subject particularly, therefore would not go looking for an AI video on it.

Realistically, they won't process information like other people, so regardless of these being right or wrong, very high IQ will make them weird and analysing everything too much, or zone out/ignore most stimulus (they learn to do it) and be ultra focused (usually only these extremes , not in the middle)

The point about 'talking to yourself' is so spot on. I’ve always felt a bit self-conscious doing it, but it really does help with organizing complex thoughts. It’s refreshing to see these behaviors framed as cognitive processing rather than just being 'weird' or 'antisocial.' Great breakdown!
