    To me, BTBAM is like a heavier Dream Theater I never knew I wanted. All the good, heavy bits of metalcore with the sheer variety and instrumental skill brought in from progressive metal.

    • @TundraCH
      @TundraCH 7 лет назад +13

      I am like you the band that i never thought i wanted but i heavily dislike the Dream Theater vocals and BTBAM is PERFECT for me

    • @TundraCH
      @TundraCH 7 лет назад +2

      Sebastian Ramirez The vocals are easily one of the best parts of Parallax, its a whole story, you can read all about it here, phenomenal story www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2012/07/24/prognotes-between-the-buried-and-mes-the-parallax-part-i-introduction/

    • @alecneevel2897
      @alecneevel2897 7 лет назад +7

      When I first got into progressive music, Dream Theater was my favorite. They completely redefined music for me. Unfortunately as I grew a bit older, they seemed to lose a bit (especially since their best days are past).
      Then when a friend recommended Parallax II shortly after it came out, music completely fucking changed for me. I had never been exposed to harsh vocals or anything like it. I probably would have said I wouldn't like them. But I started the album and couldn't think of anything else until it ended. I was in a fucking trance, my girlfriend was talking to me but I was so absorbed in the album that I didn't notice anything.
      I had no idea what was happening at the time but I was listening to music that was perfection. BTBAM shattered what I knew about music and made me curious again. I didn't know it was possible to love music so much before, but now I can say I am obsessed with progressive metal or anything remotely similar. I actively try to find music that will strike me more than BTBAM, but I don't think I will.
      Until they release their next album.

      that was quite good timing hahaha

    • @illusionvii
      @illusionvii 7 лет назад +7

      That's actually a marimba, but he's playing it with hard rubber mallets, so it has the timbre of a xylophone.

    • @jaredhoeft2832
      @jaredhoeft2832 6 лет назад +3

      Armand Medinger it is definitely not a glockenspiel. Glockenspiels are high-pitched instruments with small, metal bars, and a piercing, ringing tone. The mallet instrument used here is a marimba, played with hard rubber mallets to give it a sharper sound more similar to the sound of a xylophone (marimbas are most commonly played with yarn mallets of various hardnesses, resulting in a slightly warmer, fuller sound than what you hear in this song)

    • @Chupie77777
      @Chupie77777 6 лет назад +6

      Its actually a 60 string guitar with wood strings played with a long rubber pick

      @@kmacdizzle I was lucky enough to see Parallax II live. Most amazing shit I've ever seen in my life. On top of that, the venue they were playing at was literally shutting down for good after their show. That place was fucking insane.

  • @GraphicVandalism731
    @GraphicVandalism731 7 лет назад +40

    Yeah, buddy its all like this, since the album colors they have gotten a bit more melodic, and put some more wild and fun little parts in their songs. The first few albums were a little more grind metal style, and when they'd switch tempo it was nearly neck breaking, but the band has always been perfectionists and have always pushed to make the most they can out of their music, this video you just watched was only one song from a live version of the album Parallax 2 that clocks in at around 74 minutes long, and the whole performance is that on point

    The only downside to this being your first taste of BTBAM is the parallax is a concept album you jumped part way into. But to further answer your question, yes their music is exactly like this through their whole career.

    So... I think to really streamline the evolution of BTBAM... You should check out a several of the highlights of all their albums as well as the bands the members that make the current roster (of now more than 13 years together) came from.
    Paul Waggoner (lead guitar) and Tommy Rogers (singer/keyboardist) both played guitar in a band called Prayer For Cleansing prior to starting BTBAM. Tommy was originally singing in a band named From Here On, on the same label as PFC, and became the permanent replacement for the other guitarist for PFC. In 2000, after an accident totaled their new touring van and equipment trailer, the group disbanded. Paul and Tommy, as well as the drummer and bassist formed BTBAM, while PFC vocalist Dave Anthem moved on from music. BTBAM released two albums prior to the current lineup, their self titled debut and The Silent Circus. Blake Richardson (drums) and Dustie Waring (guitar) are also members of the band Glass Casket, playing the same instruments. Blake, Dustie, and the bassist Dan Briggs, all joined the lineup and toured prior to recording the album Alaska and that has been the lineup ever since.
    For Prayer For Cleansing; check out Sonnet, Feinbhas A Ghabhail, Bael Na Mblath, and The Closet.
    For Glass Casket I recommend: Pencil Lead Syringe, In Between the Sheets, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Phenomenon/Too Scared to Live, and Post Traumatic Death.
    BTBAM:
    Self Titled: Aspirations, Naked by the Computer, Shevenal Cut A Flip, and More of Myself to Kill
    The Silent Circus: Lost Perfection ( Whole song is split into the first two tracks on the album), Mordecai, Ad A Dglgmut, and Aesthetic.
    Alaska: All Bodies, Alaska, Selkies- The Endless Obsession, Backwards Marathon, and Autodidact.
    The Anatomy Of is a collection of covers of the bands that influenced them: Geek USA (Smashing Pumpkins), The Day I Tried to Live (Soundgarden), Change (Blind Melon), Us and Them (Pink Floyd), and Bicycle Race (Queen) are my favorites.
    Colors was their watershed moment and first concept album. Just take an hour and 5 minutes and listen to the album straight through... Informal Gluttony, Ants of the Sky and Viridian are my favorite tracks... but the whole album merits a listen.
    The Great Misdirect... such a great album. Obfuscation, Fossil Genera (A Feed from Could Mountain); Disease, Injury, Madness; and my overall BTBAM fave... Swim to the Moon... another epic journey of a song.
    Parallax I and II... they are a concept album split into an EP (I) and a full length (II). My favorites are Augment of Rebirth, Lunar Wilderness, Lay Your Ghosts to Rest, Telos, Bloom, Melting City, and Silent Flight Parliament.
    Coma Ecliptic, again a concept album. The Coma Machine, The Ectopic Stroll, King Redeem/Queen Serene, Memory Palace, and Life in Velvet are my favorites.
    Their newest album Automata I, as you might have guessed, is the first half of a concept double album. Condemned to the Gallows, Yellow Eyes, Millions, and Blot are my favorites.

    Yeah man, this probably one of the best BTBAM songs ever, and it's even more intense in this live version. I heard some of the earlier stuff but didn't get into the band's sounds. Until I heard this song and the album it is on. And thats when it "clicked" inside my brain. That song was the portal to my love for this band.

    Subscribed as soon as I heard u say "This is a beautiful mess" I think the band would love that description. BtBaM is one of my all-time favorite bands and I love seeing ppl experience them for the 1st time. U need to listen to the whole thing, now. The Parallax: Hypersleep dialogues EP and The Parallax: Future Sequence LP. Both together comprise ONE complete concept album, and tell one story between them. "Extremophile Elite" is just one small part of a much larger story. Should read along with the lyrics, as well.

    Definitely check out "White Walls" or "Selkies"! Although, the album "Colors" was written as a whole piece of music so I definitely recommend listening to the whole album from beginning to end. Much love from North Carolina 🤘🖤

      I had this shitty food service job one summer to make some money for university. After I got done every night, I would drive around the lake it was on, get blazed, and listen to Colors live. The last day I worked there, I ended up listening to White Walls on repeat until 4 in the morning. It just never got old.

    Love your humility bro! This band has been in my top 3 for quite some time next to August burns red and periphery and they never cease to amaze! Please do some more by them - I recommend kicking it back to 2005 with Selkies: The Endless Obsession. #carpetthestar #betweenthetoes

    This has probably been suggested numerous times already, but check out the entire Colors album. 68(ish) minutes of non-stop music. They released a live DVD/CD as well if you'd rather check out the live version. Probably their best album, IMO.

    BTBAM is like if Rush first started playing music during the beginning of the metalcore/post-hardcore scene. If you want to check out their first big hit listen to "Alaska", it's much different. They became more of this progressive experiment during the album Colors and it's very hard to recommend a single song because the album is designed to listen all the way through. It's pretty amazing but to get the best sense of that album probably check out "Ants in the Sky" and then "White Walls".

    i love how open-minded this dude is. btbam has been my favorite band of all-time (since 2009), but i hated them for years after i saw them live and refused to accept how genius their arrangements truly are. kudos to truant reacting so well to the complexities.
