I loved the game. Had 2 friends who played regularly and was very enjoyable. The servers seemed to get worse and we started losing interest. The first couple of god releases didn't take too long, but it took forever to get loki. Around that time we stopped playing because the servers were just getting worse, new content was sparse, and players were dropping off. Sad to see they still haven't released anything new since then, really enjoyed this game

the game was fun when it came out but it suffered a lot from horrible balance, like how thor's auto attack chain was just way shorter than any one else so he was automatically the worst character because getting out boxed from AA range is terrible, it also suffered from lag in the way that he who lagged was usually the victor. i had so many duels i couldnt win in the 1v1 mode due to laggy opponents that would just fall out of your AA chain, or how you could momentum cancel so fighting someone who knew how to do that in duels ment kill% was over 150% and felt awful
while it was a great idea i think they didn't put enough thought into character design for a platform fighter.

I was excited for this game when it was first announced as free to play, but then the deceptive behavior became immediately apparent when it actually wasn't free to play and instead released for $10.00, so I never even played it in the first place because I felt lied to and deceived by Hi Rez. This game was never worth $10 in the first place but we were forced to buy in if we want to play it at all whatsoever.
Second point here, it was too experimental as a 3rd person platform fighter, which have existed in the past (Like Power Stone for instance), they jumped right into an experimental game concept instead of doing something more reasonable and established, like what Riot is doing now with Project L.. when I first heard about a Fighting Game based on Smite and the Gods I was super excited, then I seen the initial trailer and was immediately turned off by this whole idea of a 3d ring out platform fighter in 3rd person. They should've just made a smash clone in 2d, or a traditional fighter which would've been even better I think as a fighting game fan.
They could've done like an MVC style 3v3 team fighter where you compose a team of Smite Gods who synergize and can do team combos, which would play into the overall themes of Smite as a team based game, they could've given the Gods passives or included items like an X factor or comeback mechanic, in my mind this is what I initially imagined when I heard "fighting game based on smite" was some sort of tag team fighter, but instead I think they took the easy way out.. instead of developing a worthwhile fighting game that could stand on it's own two feet, they just threw together some chibi skins with simplified game mechanics and put it into a gang beasts like physics simulation probably in Unreal if you were to ask me, who is a game dev by the way.
Probably ranting at this point, but this game just wasn't it.. what it was however, was a quickly and hastily developed tie in cash grab that they thought they could use to capitalize on the Smite casual audience. If Hi Rez actually wants to make a real fighting game, give me a shout because I have an endless amount of ideas for a game that would be successful in the FGC market as a fighting game player and game developer myself, ideas I already imagined the game would be before being disappointed by the initial announcement trailer.
    End rant.

Picked it up around 4 months ago or so and I honestly had a lot of fun at the beginning. The quest system letting you unlock characters was something I loved, it made me feel like I could earn new characters relatively quick! Then the quest system required double the amount of time for seemingly no reason and I realized that unless I spend money I am basically stuck with the gods I have without spending money and this game isn't worth 5 bucks. After learning that I just haven't bothered since and moved on to other things. With Texas Chainsaw finally coming out and with Smite still being something I play I just cannot find any reason to ever come back to this game.

Hi-Rez kills their own games a lot out of hubris. They pulled the same stuff with Tribes Ascend where they slowed down updates to develop Smite and kept changing the pay model to nickel and dime the player base to fund Smite and went so far as to shut down the servers and added that team to the Smite dev team. After outcry they brought it back with the promise of more updates then went "Actually this is too hard since there's no dedicated team for it and smite is too successful to pull people off that team" and shut it down again and delisted it on steam.

I got access to the closed beta and gave my extra code to my friend. Both of us have played Smash Bros. for years, and this seemed like that, but 3D and team-based. We played for a few hours and had some fun. We came back to it the next weekend (servers were only up on weekends at this point) and got bored after about an hour.
The cooldowns were awful. It's the only fighting game I've ever played where I use my moves and then all I can do for a few seconds is press LMB for light attack and RMB for heavy attack (you can also do both of these as aerial moves but the aerials felt awful unless you were edge-guarding). I think the idea of cooldowns in fighting games are fine. Multiversus had cooldowns and it worked well, but Multiversus didn't limit people to 4 attacks when their abilities were on cooldown.
Also, the basic attacks were lock on. Someone might be trying to knock you off the edge with a basic attack so, naturally, you want to dodge behind them to hit them offstage instead. You do that with perfect timing to make their attack miss... and all they have to do is press LMB again and their character will do a 180 turn and hit you before you can get an attack off. They don't even have to move their mouse to counter your direction dodge input with perfect timing.
Also, I absolutely hated playing against Thor and Thanatos. Both of them had abilities that can freeze them in the air and select a place to land and do damage. This gave them waaaaay too much ability to recover from off stage because you can't effectively edge-guard someone who can stop midair, wait for you to make your move, and then dodge it by clicking a path to the stage that avoids you.
I know Hi-Rez is new to the fighting game space, but they have to compete with other fighters to survive and the counterplay options, cooldowns, and overall flow of the DKO were all off. I think Hi-Rez misunderstood that counterplay options are what makes fighting games fun; fighting games aren't fun if you can't react to your opponent or can predict them perfectly. In DKO, you encounter both of those situations throughout every match.

It would be too much work for HiRez, but a new video game they can make would be a single player experience telling the story of either (1) Smite Lore or (2) Each God's real mythological story.
It would be standalone and price normally. No multiplayer. The story mode could be split by pantheons. OR, if HiRez decides to take on the smite lore, the story is told from different Gods point of view leading up to every God meeting and fighting each other.
Maybe an rpg? Call it "SMITE: The Story" or "PANTHEON". Idk, names not too great but you get the idea.

I think the problem with DKO is that it was supposed to be a part of that trend of "arena team games" like Knockout City and Ninjala and whatnot that were billed as easy alternatives to fighting games that exploded with the end of Smash Ult, all of them hungry to steal that playerbase.
so while they were pitching it as "Smash but THIRD PERSON!!!" it... was joining a genre that was already well established, and it was clearly far behind the competition.

Another factor as to why I think DKO also failed is because it's "inspiration piece" also died off quite quickly.
I haven't heard anything about Multiversus in years. I remember people being hyped at its announcement because it was Shaggy vs. Superman or waiting for Hugh Neutron to be added. Then the joke got old. It was only treated as a joke from the start and they managed to become almost hidden except to those that suffer from sunk cost. No-one took Versus seriously, not even the management who played into the joke nature of the reveal such as the taunts.

  • @DaddyDeGrand
    @DaddyDeGrand 10 месяцев назад +1

I enjoyed DKO and liked its gameplay. It was doomed to fail the moment they primarily marketed it towards Smite players. It was doomed to fail that way because Smite Players are burned on failed HiRez products. Most did not even attempt to play because of that, the others never commited to it because they knew it wouldn't last.
Bad marketing, slow reaction to bad balance, very slow development cycle with a too small roster and very slow meta progression were also exhausting.

Why do I play this game? Well, I love Smite and I love Smash bros, it kinda combines both in such a fun way. And it came out at a time where I was actually hating smite, and it was leagues more fun to play. I was part of alpha and beta testing and the game definitely had potential, but the weirdest part is that the beta was the healthiest that the game ever was.
During Alpha Testing there was a lot of complaints about the progression for all of the gods as well as frankly abhorrent balance for Thanatos, Hercules, Arthur, and especially Susano and Ama.
There was also problems that they refused to fix regarding the cross-progression where several big people in the community at the time had lost the stuff that they paid for because the cross prog just decided to stop properly working for no reason, this included people who didn't use cross-progression at all.
Zeus was intended for Launch but was cut from launch because apparently his mechanics were misbehaving, but honestly that wasn't really the case but he did need some nerfs.
After the game officially released everyone expected the servers to have problems but even after the population went below the amount of players for the Beta the servers just stayed absolutely terrible and likely only have gotten worse.

Dude I’m still sad about rogue company was really fun to me and in the beginning DKO was too but just same things happen 😞 ( also I really enjoyed those games because they were the only ones me and my dad played a lot together before he couldn’t play anymore wish they were still amazing when they were released sadly they just need to actually care about a game and not the money)

They better do something about like, idk, everything? Im talking gameplay, gamemodes, ranked, new gods, new maps, and literally everything they need so people constantly play it and have dozens of hours of playability without getting bored like smash or brawlhalla

I liked DKO, I've played it for a few hours, but I also noticed the very farm heavy way to buy characters, I only managed to buy one single character and I always find it too repetitive to play with the same characters over and over, so the lack of many options to play as made me quit. It's a shame because the game is fun, but they had it coming really imo

When I went to try it, I saw the price tag on it and I got confused. I thought this was free to play, so I read the comments and the majority said it was a free2play monetization game(inga shop etc), that had a buying cost. O boy was I not in the mood to try it.

Its such a shame....This could of been a Top Tier Game. Amazing concept, amazing graphics. They should do what multiversus did. They should shut down the servers, fix and improve it...and relaunch later.

the dev team for this game had the blessing of Hi-Rez who didn't develop the game, though what I think killed it as all of the reviews are about not having some kind of system that grouped players based on level

Their first mistake was charging players for a spinoff of a game originally free-to-play: between nick brawl stars and multiversus, which ambitious crossover took the masses by storm on release?
I'm so tired of smash clones doing this in general, but a smash clone without a universal block, is *DOOMED* to die, exclusively because of the meta that decision births instantly.
And to top it off, there was literally nothing there. I've seen more content on MOBILE smash clones, and you know what, they didn't charge you on entry, either.
DKO was the moment Hi-rez officially let us know they have a severe delusion that people care about them as a brand, when 80% of us only played smite because the Playstation doesn't have League on it.

The decision behind making DKO to me was just mind boggling to the fullest. Making a game as shallow as that and just stamping the Smite logo over it, I wonder if it could have had more attention if it was its own IP rather than Smite. Either way a game as shallow as that was bound to fail. Even by watching the gameplay you could easily tell how much there is to the game.

  • @Dalkian
    @Dalkian 10 месяцев назад

The gameplay was fun, but you could tell the focus was on monetization even in the early access.
Combine that with the god awful progression, lack of content, balance and how clear it is that the game wasn't made with a vision in mind.
I can honestly say that it had the potential to be an amazing success, but whether it was let down by something in the pipeline or by the wrong captain at the wheel doesn't matter anymore.
It's a darn shame that companies keep blinding themself with priorities that only hurts the product and said priority in the end.

Honestly expected, the alpha was fun they were just too dedicated to trying to get smite players on board. I'm guessing someone at a higher up marketing level decided the safest bet was to bank on the franchise they have, which could've worked if they also appealed to the fighting game crowd more. If they had more people from 2'd fighting games play it, I'm sure it would've been better.

Honestly at this point I feel like if hi rez is going to bother doing any more smite spin offs they have 3 options smite genshin, smite dating Sim, or smite 2. I don't even like genshin or dating Sim games but I can see where they have their appeal and how it seems like the kind of thing that could print endless money for them. If they keep doing these other smite spin offs that just don't hit the target their just draining resources from the only things they have pulling in a profit.

Honestly DKO was fun. My complaints about it were pretty simple. Why is the roster so small. And certain characters were so broken compared to other that if you werent playing them you were getting bodied. Hercules was one of those characters.
Some characters were more fun to play like Athena, and Ymir, but most of them werent that fun. The game had a lot of potential but the developers really missed the mark

Its funny because they barely realized how much of a steal the buy all gods deal is compared to other games that either dont have it or have it at 100+ and they dont wanna do that ever again but wont take it out of smite since its been too long and too many people have it now. But in general they make their money from skins anyways so they dont monitize gods hard

I got the game for free on a key giveaway and really liked it for a couple of hours, then I came back to play the next two days after for an hour each and then never came back. It just gets too old too fast and the combat mechanic becomes frustrating, I saw some potential but I knew it was going to die pretty quickly.

My experience was the exact same tbh. Got it during the "free to keep" launch event and played for maybe 4-5 sessions of an hour or two and then just never felt the urge to play again. It was kinda fun for those hours but got old quick cause of a lack of content.
