Great info. I really needed to know if Perilla has the same level of weediness as mint. Your video show very clearly how it grows. I'm now confident I can grow it in the ground and not worry too much about it spreading in my garden/yard. Thank you so much.
In Japan we eat in salads like lettuce, there are many ways to eat it and one of the best things it acts on the immune system and for helps to get rid of many allergies
Which country are you in and are you in a frost zone? Just trying to work out how tropical it is, or not, where you are as I understand that perilla is not frost hardy
None of the seeds that I got have even sprouted. I'm in Central California in a very sunny area. What am I doing wrong? Are my seeds too old bought from a local nursery?
Hello, I have a perilla plant but the leaves have white/ brown spots and don't have a vibrant green color as yours. I think they are infected. Do you know how I can naturally get rid of this infection? Thank you.
In Korean we call it Kkaetnip. Haha it's kind of hard to romanize the spelling, but it's definitely my favorite! I never really liked it until I had a tuna gimbap once and they had it inside. It went perfectly with the tuna and rice. Yum!
Also.. question.. do they come back every year ?? Anually.?? I have grow light in my basement I live in OHIo soo it gets very cold... I just live shiso. Soo hereby and great w noodles and wraps..
Hey how do you pick the leaves for eating, I mean do you just pick the leaves off the branch or should I cut off the stem with leaves on it, which leaves to my second question, how do you prune it ?
You just eat the leaves. Shiso is predominantly used in Japanese cuisine. We eat it with rice. You can shred the raw leaf and put it on rice, or use it like a lettuce wrap and put rice and meat in it. *like korean bbq style lettuce wraps* you can also cook it if you wish. Its common to eat nigiri sushi with green shiso leaf. And you want it to grow to size, dont eat them when they are small. Check out recipies on google for more ways to enjoy them : )
How come my plants produce only tiny leaves. If their leaves grow big, the leaves are crispy dried at the edges as if they were scorched by a fire. Please help. Thanks.
Question...I bought 4 very leafy purple shiso back in August this year. Now they have lost a lot of leaves...is that normal? I'm in southern California
I growing Green Shiso from seed.. but i curious why my green shiso plant produce white flower after 2 month...the leaves not even bigger like yours....
Mint is super easy to control, like bamboo. Just cover the ground with cardboard and they can't run anywhere! LOL Better still, keep harvesting them. LOL LOL
@@KhangStarr once the plant gets bitter should I just toss them or can anything be done with them? (I think my aerogarden light was too hot... I cut them down to the smallest bit, and moved them outside to no avail..it happened to everything under that light..
Yes, it is often called sesame leaf in cuisine and Asian markets, but it is not actually sesame -- just the same name. Perilla is in the mint family, not the same family as sesame.
Green shiso grows wild here in southern Missouri, but I read somewhere that it is not as good as the domestic variety. Do you have any information of different types of green shiso? I need to go and harvest some of the wild and try it, but I do not have a source for some of the domestic kind for comparison.
nice! I couldn't find any perilla seeds or plants sold near me, so I think I'm gonna go and just buy some cut ones and do this haha. may I ask where that soft planter is from? it looks like fabric or peat.
You may plant the cuts right away should be faster. No need to soak for roots. I have one of purple and green ones. I would dry some for winter days when you have a cold.

My green perilla leaves have brown edging and also flowering. Please tell me what did I do wrong with the plants. About the flowering how can I stop it.
All plants will flower, but in cases like these plants, or even with plants like basil or cilantro, you want to pinch off the flowers so that the leaves have more flavor. I think if you let the plants go to seed, they die out faster. But that is the only way to save seeds for next season, so you should let them flower towards the end of the season.
WOWOWOW !! IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND EVERYWHERE ...FOUND SOME ON AMAZON. PAID 7$ FOR PROB 2-300 SEEDS AND FIND OUT I COULD HAVE ROOTED MY OWN FOR PENNIES. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 GOOD ONE ON MEEE...

You're so amazing. So much patience in doing this

This looks easier than growing from seeds! thank you
Thank you! Very helpful,. Have 3 cuttings in a cup with water already hope to try out in the cold frame soon.
Amazing! Thank you for a thorough video!

I love eating these herbs as a side dish along with cucumber slices for Asian beef or chicken salads.
Feel in love with these leaves from using them as wraps for Korean bbq. Just planted about 20 seeds today, wish me luck 🌱❤️
How's the perillas?
Do you have to change the water during waiting for stem to root
My coming back every year. love the purple kind. Also the Rau dap ca.
I heard that you can make a drink from the purple leaves. Can you also do the same with the green leaves?
I got 12ounces of perilla seed at a Chinese market in Dallas. 2dollars. In the spices aisles.
Did you need to change the water once in a while to keep it from molding? Thanks!
I plant some but the color is green on top and purple in bottom leaves...is it some kind of shiso too?
Which country are you in and are you in a frost zone? Just trying to work out how tropical it is, or not, where you are as I understand that perilla is not frost hardy
Thank you so much for this video!! Can't wait to try it out!!
Wonderful video! I love your calming voice.
It is like basil. You probably should put more water into the bottle cause the roots will come out in between nodes.

It's more prounced like gahn neep. Good for wrapping rice and meats, garlic, etc.
catnip

Looks a lot like my catnip plant. Cool!
Catnip is in the mint family, if I remember correctly...

And is smaller/younger leaf better for eating?

“The Japanese uhhhhhhHhh or the Korean kind” you’re gonna start a battle now boy!! Hahahaha I loved your video
Between the purple and the green, which do you think is better overall for using in Asian dishes?
Purple & Green Vietnamese kind taste very similar. Green Japanese ones are much stronger and mintier.
I don't think I would like the mintier flavor as much. Purple it will be! Thanks Khang.
@@KhangStarr Like spearmint, peppermint or nana mint? Is there a big difference?

Is it possible to grow it indoor, from seeds?
i think so.. i will tell you, is i try it
*if
I did exactly that method but never have any root and it end up rotting.
Thanks. I just bought seeds. It's late, but I'm going to put them in now. We had 30's into April so no chance until now.
I could never get mint to over take my garden, i guess that's a good thing.
What is the average temps when they germinate ? I have not had luck with germination here in PNW
if you see this comment as this video is 3 years old now :)
are the green and purple bascially the same nutrionally

Yes, Basil is the easiest to propagate.

Colleen Fung How do you use it when you catch a cold?
How do you prevent aphids??
I've seen commenters mention neem oil for many bugs, but I personally don't know.
Where to buy the seeds?
Thank you

Does the Korean variety grow up tall, or bushy?
Yes, they can get quite tall and bushy. Their leaves are really large and taste and smell much more minty than the Vietnamese kind.
I've only had the Korean variety but have never seen the plant :) thanks for the info!
Mines just sprouted couple of days ago.
I thought perilla mint is poisonous?

Elizabeth Lewis Fresh can be found at Asian stores especially Korean markets where you find other veggies.
