This video is missing a lot of details that actually saves a lot of fuel and/or reduces pollution. To start, doesn't some trucks have batteries for the A/C that doesn't require the engine to be on all the time? A lot of truck drivers sleep in their trucks when the day is over so they run their A/C often. Also, isn't running biodiesel a good way to save the environment? Depending on the blends, the MPG difference is either a tiny bit lower(for B100) to better than diesel (B5 - B20). But in every way you put it, using biodiesel reduces emissions to the double-digits. Lastly, what about regenerative braking? This doesn't just apply to hybrids, it applies to plain old diesel too. When a truck is coasting or braking, wouldn't letting that momentum run the generator reduce fuel consumption. On top of that, wouldn't running less belts put less wear and tear too? I know that's a lot of questions, but they're important ones. So please answer
Heavy-duty tractor-trailers -- also known as Class 8 trucks -- are a vital part of America's economy, hauling about 80 percent of the nation's goods. Our SuperTruck initiative, in partnership with industry, is working to make these big rigs more efficient by developing new technologies that lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Watch our latest Energy 101 video on heavy-duty trucks to see how these technologies work. Learn more about the SuperTruck initiative here → 1.usa.gov/1HjGWom
What a horribly inefficient and destructive means of moving a single trailer from point A to point B. The drivers' health is damaged by it, the road surfaces are damaged by it, the interstates are far more dangerous because of it, the noise pollution is maddening, the smoke and soot from the exhaust is a nuisance, the amount of petroleum to produce the tires alone (all 18 of them) is shameful. When the tire (retreaded) spontaneously unravels at 75-80 mph downhill it leaves potential destruction in its path for motorists, when the good ol boys who drive them decide to bunch up and have a chat over CB one or more of them invariably jumps over in the left lane for the duration of a long uphill climb slowing the flow of all traffic to 45 mph or less, the same vehicle that is intended for interstate travel is of course going to wind up on a city street at its destination where it will block entire street corners whilst backing into a space about as wide as my kitchen, the whole culture surrounding trucks and truck stops is in large measure detestable, and . . . well don't we just love this "vital part of America's economy" that moves crap made in China from place to place while the rail system quietly rusts in the rural wide open spaces between point A and point B?
Jon Tate I suggest you just quit using the store to buy anything! No cars, no gas, no clothes, no food, nothing! What the biggest industry in America needs to talk about is occupied time, pay and health benefits. All of the companies lie, cheat and treat their employees like dirt. They cheat them on medical benefits, they threaten them, they cut their pay and benefits, they offshore their bank accounts, they Romney organized labor, they file bankruptcy on a regular basis, they rebuild junk equipment and write it off as new, they buy out successful companies and run them in the ground, they blame union employees for poor management. The management are lazy bums that never worked a good day in their lives but have the college gold stamp of approval on their foreheads that entitled them to cheat everyone! the last thing anyone wants to do is aquire a CDL and introduce your self to the trucking industry! Your life will be over until you die or separate yourself from it! Its a total lie, no future, no life, no family, poor health and death!
J. Meye Well said. Trucking, as an industry, is horrible. It is killing people - slowly - with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and osteoarthritis to name just a few. Let trucking cease to be the biggest industry in America then and let the religion of consumerism that drives that industry and the inherent evils that you named, cease with it. In the year 2015 if we can't come up with a better means of moving a single trailer full of potato chips, soda, beer, or NASCAR T-shirts to the salivating masses of obese consumers at Wall-Mart then we possibly are as arrogantly idiotic as European countries believe us to be. Yes, we must have trucks. But, no we must not be made to believe that they are the only way to move freight. That is nonsense. Nonsense that kills people as you pointed out. As for the information in the video from the DOE: 4% my ass. Counting neighborhoods and cul-de-sacs to dilute the percentage down? Also, "huge opportunity for increases in efficiency" (or however that was worded) is a very cryptic way of saying, "we're doing this wrong, but we are going to keep doing it anyway". If the tool is poorly suited for the task then one must use a better tool.
You can save $20,000/year on fuel !!..all for the low low price of what...1 million for this super rig? Don't business owners write off fuel as a business expense anyway? Just wondering.
As soon as you said combustion engine your "Advanced" filler word compounds it's meaning as a filler word. Your a government entity. A public servant. As such we look to you for leadership and you failed us. You failed. You failed your kids and their kids and every generation here after. My responsibility is to be better than you as a leader your responsibility is to make sure your generation makes sure the next exceeds your own life because that's the meaning of innovation. But I won't continue to allow these failures to happen. You won't beat me. So you might as well cut your money lines and attach the heart strings to your next generation and for once be a fucking leader.
wow... did not know there was an all electric truck! really cool!

Is that a league of legends profile picture.
Excellent series, DOE! You rock!
Hey Lynn Chen! Thanks so much for watching our videos! We appreciate it!

They need to consult COLANI - an ingenious expert at automotive everything. He has already produced what they described they wanted.
Congrats DOE- Nicely done!
