The drivers have an electronic pad at the front they use to give transfers and tap cards and when someone gets on without paying there is a button they can hit and they collect the data. Ive asked a few of the drivers about it.
That is about as fast as u need to go nowadays to fare evade with no ticket booth operator. Just walk behind someone who paid as the gate opens like they do in parking garages.

I do agree with you. I feel like I’m the only one taping my card. I see people do pretend taps like they motion over the machine but the light doesn’t change. I’ve even seen people tap and it goes red and nothing happens. You see it so often you think why should I pay?

I've seen kids in the classroom - no discipline, no respect, do what they want and then the parents blame the teachers. Society in general needs to re-learn how to be respectful and honest. Another issue with our current system is the courts - no real sentencing of offenders therefore there is no deterrent to stealing or vandalism or anything else. Look at Toronto - the guy killed a police officer and he's out on bail conditions - really?? No deterrent for anyone else to do the same.
In the UK I have a disabled railcard to get a discount on trains (there are also ones for age 17-25, seniors, veterans, families and couples) and mostly the gates open but sometimes they randomly lock so the staff can check that I am actually the holder of the card.. there is always a member of staff whenever the gates are closed. This also happens with child tickets to increase the risk of using a child ticket to get through gates.
Just update the equipment, change that automatic door. It is psychologically tempting to evade the fares. Learn from other countries like Japan. Also, ttc fares are already too high even wo the evasions.

Presto in Metrolinx, not ttc. Presto was forced on the TTC by the provincial government. All the ttc has to do with presto is to not interfere with their agenda, and if the ttc does interfere the government has said they will cut funding. This is what happens when the public choses to remain blind and the government decides to privitise and profiteer off what the public taxes have built. People hate the ttc because it is the most visual part of the system, even though the ttc primarily only does as its told and the politicians are the real bad guys.

However, the TTC, under pressure from all kinds of self-serving, "concerned citizen's" groups, is more worried about racial profiling and making sure it's workforce is diverse" (rather than skilled and competent). Tell the collectors to stop letting people ride for free. Collectors allow people to ride to avoid complaints put in against them. One collector allows 30 people a day to ride for free the other one doesn't and as a result has complaints put in against him. One complaint a day is unusual so if you want to keep your job let people ride for free.

A car is not cheaper than the TTC. But a car is more convenient, more comfortable, faster, and has many more benefits than the TTC.
