Dave Edmonds never gets the credit he deserves. His "Almost Saturday Night" blows Fogerty out of the water!!
Thank you for this reaction. An absolutely joyful song.
A joyful piece of music. The lyrics are quite dark!
Dave Edmunds owed the record company that discovered the great prolific Elvis Costello and Graham Parker.
always loved Rockpile and Nick Lowe
This was actually the “original” version, strictly speaking. Costello wrote it for Edmunds (and completely nailed Edmunds” musical style), then later recorded a version himself.
I love this song brings up great memories of 5th grade girl sleepover parties
❤️🤩🙏🥰

Harri - you would love his song “Crawling From The Wreckage”, a fast moving rocker with great lyrics!
And then, Linda Ronstadt covered it too, in her 1980 album Mad Love
Never liked this version, Ronstadt did it much better….
The producer of Elvis Costello's first 5 albums was Nick Lowe... of Rockpile. I saw Rockpile warmup band for Van Morrison in 1977. You should take a deep dive into Dave Edmunds albums and Nick Lowe's too the early albums were Rockpile more or less. Notice the drummer was from Dire Straits and the lead guitarist was from Lulu and Fatso
So much crossover with Nick, Dave, Rockpile, Brinsley Schwartz, and even Elvis C. Love pub rock!
Lead guitarist also on The Pretenders Back in the Chain Gang and Kirsty MacColls There's a Guy Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis
A great song writing duo of Edmunds and Lowe !!!!! Lowe on the 8 string Hammer bass.great musicians and worth checking out 🫡👍🏻
They were a great group. Every member is worth a deep dive.
Pure Pop Perfection! 🥰
The guy at Dave’s left is the great Nick Lowe. He had a monster 1978 hit with “Cruel To Be Kind.”
Dave Edmunds would go on to work with ELO’s Jeff Lynne in the early 1980s. Dave also initiated the Jeff Lynne-George Harrison introduction for the Cloud Nine album, and… well… the rest is musical history.
This was the single from the album. Good stuff!
👍🤩🙏
A great song! While it cam out in the late 70s during the height of the punk and disco era, it was a throwback to the early 60s sound . My kind of music.
Love this song and this era of rock. Coming from amongst the wreckage of punk rock were Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and the Rumors, Joe Jackson, The Cars just name a few.
Play "Broken Glass"😎🕶️😎🕶️
Pub rockers!
Wow Harri!!! I haven’t heard this song in years.👍
One of my favourite songs of all time. Love Dave, Nick and Elvis too.
Another great song “Broken Glass” by Dave saved my life.
My favorite late 70's group, Rockpile. Girls Talk was a minor hit for Dave here in the US, off his album "Repeat When Necessary". What was great about Rockpile is that the fronted Dave Edmund's solo albums (Tracks on Wax 4, Repeat When Necessary and Twangin'...) as well as Nick Lowe's Labour Of Lust (out at the same time as Repeat). And of course, the Rockpile album itself. Fantastic musicians, all. Terry Williams went on to drum for Dire Straits and Billy Bremner added his guitar work heard on The Pretenders "My City Was Gone" and "Back on the Chain Gang". His was the lead guitar on those tunes. Pub rockers supreme, Rockpile.
Rockpile also provided the the band for an excellent album by Nick Lowe's then wife, Carlene Carter.
Loved Dave Edmunds back in the day
My dad grew up with Dave back in Cardiff, Wales. I met him briefly when I was a kid too. Grew up on his songs, along with Shakin' Stevens, a fellow Welshman 🏴
One of my all time favourite songs ! .. I'm a huge Costello fan and like his original quite a bit, but this takes it to a whole new level .. A pop masterpiece !!! ( PS - A pity the great ending was cut short )
I don't remember ever hearing these guys here in the States, but you can bet I'll be checking out more of their tunes! Greatly enjoyed both the pick & the reaction. Thanks, guys!
Check out Rockpile, Dave Edmunds solo, and Nick Lowe solo (he's the tall guitar player here). They all sang and played together a lot. I hear you knockin is fantastic solo by Dave, and Cruel to be kind by Nick Lowe.
@lauraallen55 That I will, thank you. (Except for Cruel to be Kind, as I've known and loved that one for years!)
Billy Bremner, the other guitarist, also has some great solo tunes. Check out "When Laughter Turns to Tears."
I think the tour imploded in a mix of booze and drugs and was cancelled part way through, Nick and Dave continued to work together in England (producing/playing on each others disc but Rockpile as a project sort of ceased )
1980's "Mad Love" album has another great version of this hit by Linda Ronstadt!
Nice pick Kevin. I had heard versions of this song by Elvis Costello, who wrote it, and Linda Ronstadt. This version sounds wonderful too. Great reaction. Thanks Kevin and Harri 🌺✌️
👍❤️🥰🙏🤩
Forgot all about these guys man , thanks for the slap in the memory bank. I need more Fantastic😊
Wow didn't know this was them, but no surprise, they obviously had a good jam together ❤
Listen to the song "Crawling from the Wreckage". And plus there is a live video on u tube....of them in Germany, I think and it's a super tight 30 minute set that's AMAZING.
Nick Lowe, co-leader of Rockpile is worth a dive. Great songwriter with a love of wordplay. I love the sound of breaking Glass, Cruel to be kind, Marie Provest, Half a man and half a boy, All men are liars (is it the first rick roll?) and I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll. Dave Edmunds was more a producer and cover artists in the rockabilly/rock n roll songbook but you still have Queen of Hearts, A1 On the Jukebox as stand outs.
I like the Elvis Costello version best but do like this one a lot
I always thought it was "Girl's talk" in stead of "Girls talk" 😄
This version is so much better. Rockpile is an unrated band. They're live shows are SOOOOOOO tight....
Costello wrote it, but he gave it to Edmunds to use years before he recorded his own version, so which is original?
The guy who wrote it🤷
the person who write a song is the original
First time ever hearing this band or song to the best of my memory; but my memory isn't really all that good. Great sounds.
You may remember
" Teacher , Teacher." It was used in the movie " Bad Teacher " with Cameron Diaz.
" I Knew The Bride ( when she used to rock and roll)"
Though they only put out 1 proper Rockpile record, the same guys made 3 Dave Edmunds and 1 Nick Lowe record. They were also the backing band for, Johnny Cash' stepdaughter and Nick Lowes wife, Carlene Carters 1980 album.
I think you’ll enjoy the cover of this by Linda Ronstadt. 1980’s, and it’s quite good.
Wasn't it Juice Newton?
@@TT-fq7pl what I’m referring to is on Linda’s “Mad Love” album. Juice may have done a cover-if so , I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard it.
@@robynmatheson7687 Didn't know about the Ronstadt version. And I think I'm confusing this song with "Queen of Hearts," which was the Juice Newton cover of Edmunds that was a big hit. Sorry.
@@TT-fq7pl no need to apologize. And you gave me info that I was unaware of- I’ve never known that Dave Edmunds wrote “Queen of Hearts”
@@robynmatheson7687 Well, I'm not sure he wrote it. I'm assuming he did because I first heard it on one of his albums years before Juice Newton covered it. Probably another Edmunds-Lowe composition, I suspect.
Nick Lowe on bass...you said you didn't know if him in a previous spin.
I agree its a great version . What came first i do now know even if its a Costello song. Costello voice and songs are often genius but know and then its terrible . Very strange . But Costello is one of the greatest tunesmiths of the 70s and 80s
Yup still sucks@ sorry 😞
Don't be sorry. It's still not too late to develop good taste.
