    Sean Connery is the only Bond who could combine a real dangerous menace and still have that boyish sense of humor and the glint in his eye. The others could do one or the other but Connery was the real Bond.

    Sir Christopher Lee - Ian Fleming's

    I agree that the 007 formula was in place from the start... that's what I always loved about the Bond franchise.. you can (more or less) watch them in any order and you will always recognize Bond and the universe of Bond.

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 Год назад

      There was no "formula"; the first 4 Bond films each have their own theme, their own pace. When Gilbert Lewis made "You Only Live Twice", he simply didn't have the imagination to bring the book to screen and instead just re-made "Doctor No", essentially. OHMSS was one last spurt of creativity and sticking to the novels that, sadly, just missed out on greatness by a Connery-length. After that, when the producers demanded another "Goldfinger" from Hamilton, he gave them literally that, trying to recreate step by step that film's story elements in "Diamonds are Forever". That was the beginning of the series ripping itself off with each successive film. After one last climactic call-back with "The Spy Who Loved Me", the magic was gone, never to be regained.

    • @martinrosendahl9134
      @martinrosendahl9134 Год назад

      @@varanid9 sure there was a formula... theme and pace is not essential for a franchise as this one. Those things have varied a lot throughout the years... just compare Casino Royale to Skyfall? Huge difference in pace... just to name a recent comparison.
      Some are loud action set pieces and some are more subtle and story driven.
      The formula of 007 (imo) is the Bond character and his traits - he's the master of seduction, he's a master of being stylish in all situations, he's efficient with most weapons, he's a martial artist, he master's most vehicles, planes and so on... then you have the Bond girls, the gadgets, the cars, the conspiracies... all pretty much established from the start.
      Btw.. never read the books - so I'm only referring to the movies here. I'm aware that they took MANY liberties when making the scripts. I'm sureboth story lines and the character itself is changed a lot. Just wanted to point it out since you are referring to the books :-)

In 1967 just a few years later she's in the spoof film Casino Royale and you can understand her just fine despite the accent. So if they could let her be heard there then why not this film? Stinks of racial prejudice frankly. I wish they could release a cut with her normal voice but I spose it doesn't even exist, it's an insult to the actor frankly.

    From some books about the Bond Franchise Connery's interview with Broccoli & Saltzman didn't go well at all. It wasn't until it was all over & 1 of them was standing looking out of a window onto a very busy London Street, pavements heavy with pedestrians & loads of traffic on a 4 lane roadway, (2 lanes in each direction). Connery emerged from the building & diagonally walked through the crowd. The producer at the window called the other to come & see this. Connery didn't swerve or veer once. It was the people around that changed their course, as if some force field was making them do so. He ignored the Crossing & simply stepped out into traffic. It stopped. As he approached the farthest 2 lanes, he looked at the oncoming cars & they simply stopped. Better still was when he approached the far pavement, it being mobbed out with people, the 'force field' caused pedestrians to change their intended path. The Producers said he's the man with that Presence.
    Once in the early 1970's, I was in Edinburgh, Scotland. Struggling as a young kid on one of the main pavements in the City Centre loaded with people. Head down & plodding along amongst all these adults then, at last, a break in the crowd. Standing on some clear pavement at last. In the middle of this large oval shaped space, several feet wide, I saw a pair of brown brogue shoes, dark green & brown striped tweed trousers & jacket, shirt & tie to match. It was Sean Connery! I noted that as he walked on this clear space was never entered by anybody on that pavement.
    RIP Big 'Tam' Connery.

    @Minty I have to say this is a super special video because I can remember fondly watching all the Bond films endlessly as a kid. All the Bonds and their eras, are unique, but the original Bond, Connery?
    I ENVY how lucky the kids and teenagers of the 1960s were at the time this, very first movie Bond, was released (not the 1st ever adaption because, quite wonderfully, there is the live 1954 TV version of "Casino Royale" with JIMMY BOND).
    Everything has a beginning and there are many milestones in cinema history.
    But, long before "Star Wars", this James Bond film debut, completely revolutionised the way films were made.
    So, MANY legends were born in the amazing 60ss. It's mind bending how much greatness there was.
    Thank you Minty for making my day and week with this. Extra special.
    Yours Shaken, not Stirred,
    David

    Originally, Bond was first cast in the TV variety show, Climax. Actor Barry Nelson played him in the televised Casino Royale telling. After the show, Flemming didn't like Bond being an American spy working with the CIA while Felix Lighter was his MI-6 contact. He decided to change his character to either make him a woman or British to flesh out the character more. At the time with movies like Modesty Blaze and TV shows like The Avengers, female spies were common so Flemming made him English and Lighter American. Also, From Russia With Love was not the second Bond book, it was the fifth. It was made the second Bond movie after President John F Kennedy mentioned it as one of his five favorite books. Ironically, From Russia With Love would be the last movie Kennedy saw before his fateful trip to Dallas.

      In many cases the reason for dubbing is the fact that they could not record the sound the same time or the ambient noises ruined the original recordings. They might have intentionally in some cases change the actor when recording the lines to be dubbed but I believe in many cases it was most likely just availability situation. The actor might have been already doing another project so it was easier to get someone else to do the lines and dub over.

      @@Wezqu That would explain the dubbing but not the hauling in of different actors to do the voices. In many cases the actor's voice was fine but maybe not the right ethnic approach for the time.

    Goldfinger created the whole adventure-within-an-adventure prologue, introduced super cars and eccentric henchmen, and also perfected the music video opening credits. Goldfinger also created the infusion of eccentric extravagance that marks the Bond franchise. But Doctor No was also the template for many Bond films to follow and is arguably better paced than Goldfinger. Terrence Young had a much more high brow sense of subtle humor than Guy Hamilton and also refused to pander to the audience.

    It wasn't until the Bond film, Thunderball where they ACTUALLY began to make notice of the 007 and Bond schticks and MUCH LATER made mention that Dr. No; From Russia With Love; and Goldfinger were even the same Bond in each.
    Ian Fleming also made note that George Lazenby...James Bond in On Her Majesties Secret Service...was THE ONLY actor who looked like the character he had portrayed as James Bond

    On the comic book cover: VERY commonly the covers were done by different artists than the comics themselves. Also note that comic book art was a three part/person process. The main artist did their work in pencils. Then after they finished an inker went in and inked the pencil drawings. After that someone else did the coloring. I've left out the letterer, oops (or "how Stan Lee heroically prevented Steve Ditko from making Spiderman a whacko Objectivist libertarian")! So in short, whoever(s) did the cover art for the comic book, probably one member of the team didn't realize Bond was supposed to have black hair, or CHOSE to do it that way so that Bond and Dr. No looked a bit more different from one another? I'm actually surprised that DC didn't exaggerate the appearance of No to make him look stereotypically Chinese versus the accurate depiction of the whitewashed (white actor playing Asian) character who appeared in the movie.

They got unexpectedly high attendance numbers, which was a surprise as the western had already been shown and discovered the audience were attending in large numbers to view the B movie and the franchise seemingly took off.
