I've been eating the couscous meal you posted about, oh, I don't know a couple years ago? The couscous Olive oil, raisins, and some kind of nuts like pine nuts or something. It's really good
That dinner is perfection. I stumbed across something very similar on one of my first hikes when I threw together a mixture of odds and ends that were left in my food bag. Except I cook mine, and I add cheddar cheese and hot sauce. I called it backpacker nachos. Good by itself, even better rolled up in a tortilla.
Ok I make a pretty similar dinner every night, minute rice (with taco seasoning for extra flavor/salt) and bean dip from the tin you find in the chip aisle pretty much anywhere (even gas stations) and I love me some Fritos for crunch and flavor, my fave is the chili cheese kind. I've never gotten my act together enough to ship resupplies to myself consistently, but it still works out to be pretty cheap, filling and tasty as hell (albeit *slightly* heavier since my bean dip comes hydrated). Thanks for sharing as always, looking forward to seeing your updates once you hit the trail!

This is great! I don't eat very much in the backcountry simply because I don't want to cook, wait, or deal with the stove. The pre-packaged meals take up a lot of space also. Thanks for sharing! 🤙
I wish we could get either the dehydrated cooked beans or the minute rice here in the UK, as I'd love to try this, but we can't. My equivalent cold soaked meal is noodles with peanut butter powder, with Doritos. Again about 900 calories.
You got this, Jupiter! May good fortune come your way. ... Hey I'm curious how you carry your olive oil? I use what is essentially a miniature platypus bottle that I found in the travel section of the local megamart. K, thanks again for sharing your stuff!
I buy olive oil in bulk, and then buy a 6 pack of tiny (I think 8oz) apple juice bottles for kids. Drink the juice, clean the bottles, and then repackage the olive oil in those bottles. They have never leaked on me which is nice, and they're small enough where I don't feel like I'm carrying too much for any given stretch of trail.
@@JupiterHikes oh yeah, leakage would definitely not be good. 🤔 I'll have to keep an eye on that! Thanks for the reply! I love that you take the time to answer people's questions. Oh, and I got some of the beans to try out!
I liked the nature valley fig bars, too. , Justin's nutbutters are great. I've found that I needed something like a sandwich to fill up so I found english muffins smooth well and are pretty light. ... with Justin's filled me up. A meal I made to fill me up was I got bunch of mixed dried organic mushrooms from Costco and blended them, then had, freeze-dried white onions, garlic powder, salt, nutritional yeast, textured soy protein. I also ordered cashew milk powder from znatural foods to make it creamy... (this is also a nice creamer for coffee or tea) This was added to noodles, couscous.... sometimes dill or cumin, etc to change it up a little. I also had flaked beans and made various meals with those. Pre making bags of nut varieties and cranberries or raisins are really satisfying. It's best to chew them to a paste to extract all the nutrients. I often will start with apples cucumbers and will eat those on the first day or so to offset carrying water. Actually really hydrating.

This looks 100% vegan and almost what I would pack. My only concern is your lack of micronutrients, I suggest tossing in some nutritional yeast into your rice packets (flavor, B12, iron, etc) and iodized salt (or occasionally eat some dry seaweed snacks). Sure you could take a multi-vitamin but that tangy yeasty flavor works so well with rice dishes. I was thinking of doing cajun rice packets like jambalaya and I'm probably going to use your idea of refried beans as a test run. Thanks and good luck on the trail!
Still amazing anybody eats that much in one day. To eat that many bars each day, you’d need to be chewing non-stop! Eve need after hiker-hunger sets in, I max out at about 3 per day. Hey, what ever works!
Would like to see ya do the Allegheny Trail next year. Last spring I did a 98 mile section of it and planning on doing another chunk of it this year. It's awesome. I loved you food ideas. I have to eat gluten free and just about everything you had fit.
I just finished the AZT last month and sent myself 4 boxes with food I have always eaten and enjoyed. By the second box, I tossed them in the hiker boxes with the exception of my dinners. I ended up buying all of my resupply food because I just didn't want to eat a single thing I shipped. I think on future thru hikes, I will only ship dinners because I have eaten them for years and always enjoy them. Interestingly enough, they are beans, rice salsa and chicken which I cook and dehydrate at home.
Also, I just wanted to mention that most of Nuun is the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to make your drink fizzy (talk about luxury). They are what 6 grams each plus the container? IMHO, I personally don’t think they are worth it unless you’re looking for that effervescent experience. Can do flavor drops like Mio to cover up funky water. What I would recommend is 1/4 tsp of good sea or Himalayan salt, 1 pack / 2 tabs of Medi-Lyte electrolyte replenisher (cheap on Amazon) for the calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and possibly some honey for the carbs (30-60 grams per hour when pushing). I’m bringing straight up salt and a honey bear. 🧂 🍯

I haven't but will often just drink some at the end of the day. I have on the other hand in the past added like extra micro nutrient supplements to them. I don't do that anymore though
Oops you right! Guess I meant from mt laguna to warner springs, which is 70. Small mixup but at least my food will remain the same. My plan is to buy a bit extra in mt laguna, skip julian, get a bit more extra in warner springs, and then first real resupply is idyllwild.
@@JupiterHikes Exactly what I did on my thru- though I didn't put nearly that much planning into it. Just showed up at the border with 2 days food and everything worked out. SoCal is a great logistical ramp-up for new hikers with such frequent resupply options.
Hey Jupiter, thanks for all your videos and sharing your experiences with us. I was hoping you could do a video on cold soaking. My interest is in figuring out what you take, how do you make sure it makes nutritional sense and meets caloric density needs, how you minimize packaging waste, how long it takes to soak, and any other insights you could offer. Thank you.
Hey Jupiter! I see you don’t have a box for Snoqualmie Pass, resupply is pretty tricky there. Are you planning on skipping it and going 170 miles from White Pass or Stevens Pass? I’ll be going SOBO in late June, I’ll probably see you in Washington or Oregon! Love the videos man.
You'll probably want a package there, but I have been there before and unless somethings changed there is a gas station and convenience store. Not a great resupply but I'm ok with that. Hope to see you out there!
Who taught you this method? I’ll keep watching in case you say it in this or one of your other videos. I am older than you but I’m learning from you. Thank you. Just curious who taught you this method
which method do you refer to? A lot of the things I do are adapted from hikers that have inspired me over the years, swami, dirtmonger, ray jardine, scott williamson.... so it could be any one of those people
The food looks good! Are you driving your van or flying? The logistics of driving, storing the vehicle then flying back to get it seem difficult. That would make a useful video.
It's not a science, more water and it'll be soupy, less water and it'll be thicker. I usually do more as I add fritos and extras that soak up much of that
I love the video and really appreciate you taking the time to break down your meals. I had the idea to just crush up dried lentils and try that in place of the refried but I'm finding conflicting info. I don't believe it is safe to eat cold soaked raw dried beans. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. thanks
Hey Jupiter! What a great video. I have come to really love researching healthy and appropriate trail nutrition and I sincerely appreciate you sharing your means and methods and extensive knowledge on the subject. I 100% agree with sending boxes to anywhere but a PO. So much easier to hit a friendly hostel or outfitter than a government office with regulated hours. I think I know the answer from your food choices but you still eat lunch while hiking right? I started doing it last fall (just adjusting my pace slightly while I eat) and I really like it. Especially when you are trying to push miles and fighting against the dark. I really hope that your last weeks before the trail are relaxing. The trail is looking amazing and I can imagine is going to be a busy time for you when you start! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful
I wouldn't say I am a guru on trail food or anything, but I have sent myself about 100 boxes before so that is where a lot of my experience is! The people who dehydrate everything themselves, or really go out of their way to eat healthy are the true kings and queens. I find myself more in the middle. I don't eat straight honey buns and chips, but I'm also not perfect by any means. Glad either way to offer some ideas for others to try. To answer your question, I do just snack all day and don't have a defined lunch or breakfast. Sometimes however it is nice to eat the bean mixture for lunch if I have extra. In a perfect world I would probably prepare extra for that purpose, and add dehydrated veggies to it as well. Just a matter of more effort when in the past I haven't felt a great need, so long as I am getting the calories the miles come. A trip that is more lax or fun and I could see myself doing more breakfast and lunch items, but it's no secret I like to try and push some miles instead
You are starting off about the same time as Nar Nar and Flossy. Looking forward to living vicariously through you during this thru-hike. I subbed after listening to Trail Tales a while ago. So I'm going to ask a daft question now. Are you a vegetarian or is it that the mix you have keeps better? Good luck, will be waiting with baited breath.
Curious. - If SOMEONE sends boxes ahead, food or particularly clothing/shoes, and SOMEONE has to get off trail foe some reason and end their hike, how do you retrieve those boxes? Wish you luck on your hike!
And there lies one of the biggest risks of sending yourself boxes! If you do quit it would be a big waste of time and money. So although I do them, and like them, I still don't like to recommend them to others unless it's necessary (like in washington on this trail.) If you do quit tho, to answer your question... you could have the business return the package to sender, you could tell them to give it to another hiker, or you could manually go pick the packages up yourself.
I will be flying into the US and buy this kind of hiking food in a physical store. Any recommendation of stores that will sell this? (I will be in San Francisco and then Ashland - I can only hike OR/WA this year). Really appreciate any suggestions
In san Francisco I'm sure you could find a 'whole foods' and then ashland has a great grocery store that I forget the name of, but it's healthier options and they have a huge bulk section!
Who's sending the packages or are you mailing them to yourself from towns with walmart? Are there trail angels who can mail my resuplies? Cause I'm in a different country and want to deliver them to someone in the US. How often do you have them sent? Do you have your resupply sent few days or a week before getting to a town, or a certain km amount before town?
I added the locations I'm sending my boxes to in the video description, as well as some other info. Check that out if you're interested and thank you for watching! PCT coming up as soon as soon can be

@@JupiterHikes Looking forward to your vids, I think they're a class apart among other hikers'.
Great info, thanks for sharing!
Have you ever considered adding electrolytes to your bean mixture in addition to the beverages?
I haven't but will often just drink some at the end of the day. I have on the other hand in the past added like extra micro nutrient supplements to them. I don't do that anymore though
Have fun out there! Heads up, it's only about 40 miles from the border to Mt Laguna- not the 70 you listed.
I don’t mean to be rude but I believe it’s 42 miles to laguna and 77 to Julian. Hope that helped man!
great stuff!
Thank you.
thank you so much for this one! always been curious about how your beans work as well as everything else, and those kale chips looked like weed lol
Safe travels man.
Never thought about kale chips. Will definitely be bringing some next time!
A lot of the things I do are adapted from hikers that have inspired me over the years, swami, dirtmonger, ray jardine, scott williamson.... so it could be any one of those people
@@JupiterHikes I was referring to the beans and rice cold cook method. You answered my question. I think I’m going to give it a shot.
ounces in weight or volume for the beans and rice? Thank you
Great video buddy!
The food looks good! Are you driving your van or flying? The logistics of driving, storing the vehicle then flying back to get it seem difficult. That would make a useful video.
Hey Thanks I can look at a bean and get gas if you know what I mean how do you deal with it
We are pulling for you!
Thank you!!!
Hi Jupiter, My name is Patches. Approximately how much water do you add for the bean and rice meals you prepare?
It's not a science, more water and it'll be soupy, less water and it'll be thicker. I usually do more as I add fritos and extras that soak up much of that
sick dude! i may see you out there. i start 5/16
Are the refried beans dehydrated?
When do they start? Not a veg currently, this is just stuff I have enjoyed most over the years, or things that looked good to me when shopping!
Yeah boyyyyyy
Do you add olive oil in your bag at home or you add it when ready to rehydrate? Thanks for sharing journey..
heyyyy love the videos! just curious how often to park ragers ask for to see your long distance permit o the PCT?
Do you ever eat/crave your rice and bean dinner outside of your hiking? In everyday life?
I will be flying into the US and buy this kind of hiking food in a physical store. Any recommendation of stores that will sell this? (I will be in San Francisco and then Ashland - I can only hike OR/WA this year). Really appreciate any suggestions
In san Francisco I'm sure you could find a 'whole foods' and then ashland has a great grocery store that I forget the name of, but it's healthier options and they have a huge bulk section!
You look like you're in shape.
Who's sending the packages or are you mailing them to yourself from towns with walmart? Are there trail angels who can mail my resuplies? Cause I'm in a different country and want to deliver them to someone in
the US. How often do you have them sent? Do you have your resupply sent few days or a week before getting to a town, or a certain km amount before town?
Enjoy bro
