The first step of your thought was correct, I´m just missing the following 10 steps. Educated people are nothing worth, and cause anything comes from educated people, anything is nothing worth. The mistake is trying to give a price to everything, and not that something isn´t worth anything... OK, attempt one failed, but only just. This is a great benchmark tool and I can see how it will help a lot of us tweak our printers to perfection. For me, I can see that I have a bit of over-extrusion and stringing which just made the parts a bit too stiff for the shaft which broke. Once I'd freed them, the parts themselves had enough clearance to move against each other (albeit very "scratchy"). I for one will be tweaking a couple of settings and trying to print this one again.

I did it! An amazing benchmark. Helped me realise that my printer wasn't calibrated correctly. I calibrated my flow rate and my x,y,z and e steps perfectly, and voila! I could print the engine benchmark perfectly. 1st few times I was a bit too excited and broke off 1 or 2 pistons, then I was careful and took my time cleaning up the print and rotating it slowly for a few times. After which it works perfectly!

Ok, so, I printed a 2x version @ 0.20mm layer height. It took a bit of cleanup but works just fine.
The only thing I would consider is to change the cylinder length (at the bottom) such that when the piston is at BDC (bottom dead center) the piston has more cylinder wall support. The piston wants to pop out of the cylinder.

I printed it with 0.25mm nozzle in PETG material (Prusa i3 mk3s). Just to experiment, I added supports at all the overhangs (even under the piston, connecting rod and crankshaft) and to my surprise it was very easy to break/remove the supports from the model (maybe due to 0.25mm nozzle).
Model was functional immediately after removing the supports and looks really awesome.

Would love to see this finished to a working nitro engine for small planes. Sure the tech to print directly to metal is either expensive for most or not yet there, but would love to see this work be available for when it is cost effective and available to those that are interested.
Why a small nitro engine you may ask, because to the tight tolerances and intricacies involved in this mechanism would allow for a truly amazing benchmark. Print out the engine, add oil, rotate shaft a few times, add nitro gas mixture, run till engine seizes up, note down time. A comparable metric for benchmarks.

haha, good luck! but you would have to have insane acceleration values to reach 200mm/s on this design, it contains lots of small cross sections., but let us know how it goes!

Definitely make the v-twin or v-quad for a tester, that would be super cool!

How long does it take to print it successfully?
It’s really great work - I’m sure that took a lot more time than most people spend on any given design. I was anticipating a benchy replacement for a couple of years but I don’t think this would be called a replacement because you can’t print it as quickly as a benchy. The ability to iterate is important as we tune.

In 20 years: "This print in place engine was a tool used long ago to determine if your 3D printer was properly calibrated. Now, we can just take the print off the machine, hook up the fuel rail, and start it up"

This is really awesome! Can't wait to try it. An inline 6 cylinder with a turbo would be amazing, if that would even be possible. Always look forward to your videos and creations.

brilliant! I was also planning on creating some benchmark stuff for testing and tuning settings for print and place, also for advanced support generation... great work! I will give it a go!

Z hop sucks on my printer! I get strings... Thanks for advice though!
