Reason trans upshifts quickly is to get into 2nd gear faster because convertor locks in 2nd. Means less slip and in turn less wasted eng rpm and ultimately the goal of less emmissions. Trans also has "adaptive learning" programming, trans learns/adapts to how you drive and what load it normally has. After you been towing 20k for a week then unhook and bobtail. It will shift and feel different because it is, normal. The hesitation off the line is because the inline 6 eng produces alot more torque faster below PEAK tq. (1600 rpm) than PSD/DMAX V8 competitor. the trans has to protect itself from the low end, low rpm tq and steep tq. Rise of the inline 6 eng. All real HD allisons and other HD Trans manufacturers do this that are in class 7 and 8 trucks,, not the cheap 1k version they put in the GM, allison doesn't even warranty them. Dpf issue, your idle time is roughly 20%. That is a decent duty cycle, dont let it get much higher. I know some oem OTR manufacturers are displaying soot load as 2X what the cummins ecm reports to oem modules or dash. To force people to try an regen more or alert you that it's doing it. Essentially they know the average person driving it really does not have a clue as to how the aftertreatment sys. works in its entirety, just that they are driving it. OEM"S are trying to make it more idiot proof. Hope the truck serves you well in the future and best of luck.
......Have seen some shifting issues that a software update will fix though, especially down shifting w/ exh. Brake w/ heavy loads.

@@josephpisciotta6572 Joe, you sound like someone that is very knowledgeable however just a heads up. The Allison transmission in the new GM trucks is made by GM. They actually use a great term "Allison branded". So how much other knowledge that you share is not true? There are many reasons that vehicles act the way they do but at the end of the day does it matter why? My current ride has 100,000 trouble free miles but I hate it and will never buy another one because of the many goof-ball things it does. I also cuss my transmission every day.

@@pappyone9790 I'm sorry you have trouble, and was not clear enough about the allison branded product. I apologize for that. but at the end of the day it does matter, I think do. Is " does it really matter at the ed of the day" a acceptable response from a dealer that sold you a $60 plus truck, no it's not. The allison deal is like the cummins, the isb in rams is not warranted by cummins but by ram. FCA buys the engine and puts their warranty on it. Not looking to start a war on Who knows what. Thank you for clearing that all up. I cant say I'm as up to date on GM as I am on others. But I do know that a allison dealer/ dist. Won't touch anything in the pickups.

That is the advantage to a chrome bumper (not a fan of lots of chrome). The factory spray in bed liner is or can be an issue with every brand of truck. I ended up buying a Laramie with the Chrome because I could just see that becoming an even bigger issue. The paint seemed brittle like a bug could've even caused it. Definitely need to wrap the painted bumpers, glad I wasn't the only one that noticed this.

A little nit picky jb 🤣 though i get it. When you spend $70k+ for a truck you want everything perfect. Takes alot to criticize your own truck. But if you go with ford or chevy youll find just as many things to complain about in the long run. I do agree completely with the aisin issues and the short bed. Hopefully in the full 5th gen they extend the short box another 4-5 inches, and move the 5th wheel mount back like gm. And in the near future we will likeley either see a zf 8speed or an allison replace the aisin. I applaud you for this video though, if ram doesnt know what people DONT like. They wont fix it

  • @knightwing4
    @knightwing4 4 года назад +3

About the headlights. Ram did think about that. They gave the option of auto leveling air suspension. That’s another reason for it along with better ride and handling. Ram is the only company that offers that. PD Diesel said on his channel that he got the ac and the DPF use fixed. You may want to check into it. Your transmission may need a software update. The reason it shifts at such low rpm is to try to get bette fuel mileage.

No way would I go Ford(death wobble, Ford electronics, quality) or Chevy(IFS, terrible cabin, etc). Yes, they have better transmissions, but a Five Star tune would take care of all or most of your concerns.
    - Are you leveled up front? The LEDs do auto-level up and down on start up, but do not compensate for a level.
    - Any car would chip if used on the hwy as much as you use your 3500. Xpel and ceramic coating are mandatory on all of my cars.
    - The shifter problem it me too, but the dealer fixed it.
    - I don't think the camera thing is that huge of a deal, and definitely more superior than Ford, tho GM is killing it there.
    - I DO wish for a telescoping steering wheel.
    - The seats are still based on the 4th-Gen, which didn't have 4-way lumbar. Your 2020 Laramie does have 4 way lumber, for instance.
    Keep truckin!

The problem with the transmission is it's built for heavy duty use. The clutch packs are tight and no computer programming can overcome that physical tightness when it shifts, when you use an ox to pull your garden wagon, don't expect it to handle like your donkey. If you don't need a heavy duty truck, buy a lighter one.

If you want to launch a cummins you need to spool the turbo. Every new cummins owner complains of lag on take off. Most people relate it to turbo lag. Ford and Chevy both launch really well so I don't think it's a matter of how heavy duty the transmission is. Although I think putting a 10 speed trans in the ram would help. If I towed for a living I would still prefer the cummins but I like how the duramax and powerstroke set you back in the seat. Even my old 7.3 that's nowhere near the power output of the new trucks will out run a new cummins up to about 40-50 mph. That was against a 2016 Cummins.

My 15 f150 fx4 2.7 crew cab xlt and my current 20 sierra with the 3.0 duramax have already left me on the side of the road. Also, my Cummins never actively regened in 12,000 miles and I got 10,000 Miles from a tank of DEF. That was before diesel gate though!

The 2 things that stopped my from buying a RAM were I have had a lot of Fords and the ford just felt right when I drove it and the tow mirrors. I hate the RAM mirrors, useless down, don't want to keep them up all the time, I asked the sales man do the lower mirrors change on memory as well as they need to be in different positions when up or down. And they are manual fold. I got so fed up of forgetting to pull them out on the old truck I really wanted to have electric extension on the new one so I did not need to stop and get out of the truck to change them. I did love the look (inside and out) the RAM is the best looking HD truck by some way, the interior and tech was amazing, I love the rear air bags. In the end the ford just worked for me, I am very happy with it, do sometime think I should have gotten the RAM.

On one hand I love your review because you bring up some really important issues (complexity of operating the 112" screen, not having a telescoping steering column, some build quality issues), so thanks for that. On the other hand, you could have titled this "I probably should have paid more attention before buying my $90k truck". When I bought my 2018 Rubicon, it was slightly used, and had almost everything in it I wanted. But after driving for a while I started wishing I had things like the towing package, Aux switches, LED lights. I could aftermarket these things, but now wish I'd gotten the jeep factory prepped for it. Lesson learned, do more homework before buying. That said, I'm looking at a 20 Laramie gas 2500 and your video will help sharpen my eye while doing my homework.

I think the paint on newer Dodge/Ram/Chrysler vehicles is thinner than the older models. I picked up a 2018 Dodge Durango RT and one of the first things I noticed about it is the paint thickness. I have a door ding on my driver side and you can clearly see that there isn't a thick layer if paint used when painting these vehicles. I had all sorts of rock chips that got fixed at a body shop after a branch fell on top of it.

For fair weather driving I always try to remember to shut off the rear diff traction control button and then the asi/ trans and the 6.7 eng. work together better and usually the truck has quicker shifting with better acceleration otherwise leaving the traction control active on paved roads the whole eng, trans, management system will interfere with driver input during quick takeoff/ passing by regulating throttle input frequently delaying acceleration until it figures out everything is ok to do so. Frustrating sometimes and I just work around it. With vehicles like this they should just leave the driving to the driver as I have witnessed situations where these new technologies in all new vehicles could put a driver in harms way where driver skill would effectively avoid the situation. So in certain cases skill is not rewarded instead collateral consequences could be the result . Just have to adapt driving technique to resolve this. Certainly not interested in gps self driving cars that will be a nightmare sooner or later. On my truck ram limited similar quality control of exterior trim fitting is a little off here and there also and like you demonstrated the big screen can be distracting to use amongst the many other items you have shown pretty much the same as one I have. It seems everything now is like this 😔

LOL love the video.... basically EVERYTHING Dodge on my truck is breaking....Cummins is running tip top. Everything else though....different story. I purposefully got a 5.9 because of all the horror stories i've seen about the emissions systems breaking, causing premature engine problems. I do recommend Hot Shot's Secret EDT. I use it in every tank. Apparently there's a recent update to the Trans and the ECM that fixes the Aisin shifting problems. PD Diesel put up a video about it. I've had Aisin's in my Audi's and you have to reset them every month or so to get the performance back. They "learn" and rob the motor of power...but with the update and the reset everything seems to be fixed.

Seat controls need up and down as you explained in video.

There’s other traffic car on curve, my high light beam won’t go down to dim lights until truck get in straight way to face other car to turn it down to dim. No wonder I got flashing high lights at my face during curve. Use your finger to turn light switch to dim if you see car before or during curve.

I had been using Howes and also Power Service additives since I purchased my 1st diesel pickup way back in 1989 (yes 89). My wife currently has a 2016 Grand Cherokee that used to regen probably 1x per week. A few years back, I switched to Hot Shot Secrets additives. Now I don't fill the DEF tank nearly as often as before. I have to say that I also installed an oil "catch can" so the blow-by oil is not being sent into the combustion chamber. I think both the Hot Shot Secrets, and the oil catch can made a huge difference on limiting the regens! She can't remember the last time the dash lit up saying, "Regen in progress-Do Not Shut The Engine Off"! BTW: the catch can has to be emptied about every 4-6 months....just shows how much oil gets sent into the intake!!!

Excellent review and good on you for the negatives (that’s just how you feel when you put 90k in something and “you didn’t feel any change hit you in the back of the head when you walked out the showroom” talking). My 2018 that I just bought in August of 2019 shifts great and it’s an Aisin. The air is cold and the truck has serious pep. One of the you tubers got the 2020 aisin and he has had programming issues from day one due to it being paired with the newer 1,000 ft lb engine. They haven’t dialed it in yet. I’m happy with mine but mine is a Laramie and a lot more basic than yours. I will say that the 68RFE is a little faster on take off and seems to be geared higher but the aisin in the 2018 shifts much better. I know that when I’m on the interstate doing 70 and peckerwoods in chargers try to be jerks, they have a hard time passing if I put my foot in it. Don’t ask how I know but he is still in my rear view. I am thankful for my new truck and so far I haven’t had any issues. I hope it stays like that. I test drove a 2020 last year and on the lot could not get any cold air. I think it leaked down and the pressure switch won’t allow it to cycle if it is less than 60psi in order to protect the compressor because if there is no Freon then there is no refrigerant oil. A loose seat! Hell naw that’s unacceptable. I guess I did find one problem and it was my seat will not store memory so I cannot set it

Just sold my Ram because I hated the transmission so much. It ruins the truck, hands down. Amazing engine in a subpar truck.. :(
Also, don't trust those sensors, they'll always show that it isn't 100% clean

The transmission issue is because of the cut of the gears Eagle Transmission. Dance Helix cut and then there's the angle to cut. But ankle cut is look smoother

Opinion on Aisin concerns. How FCA sets it up. Hesitance to accelerate happens with EcoD's/HP-8 using current compliant emissions set up too. 2 parts: a) FCA holds in 2nd gear with open clutches on roll down till abt 1-2 mph so power goes to torque converter and through taller 2nd gear. b) acceleration off idle is not ideal. A quality tune update (EPA-compliant tune for EcoD) includes a trans tune that drops to 1st and closes clutch earlier in all gears-it puts power down better. Optimized injection gets low end torque improvement WITH decreased regens while using EGR/SCR systems to get complaint emissions. On older EcoD, FCA tuning is ???. Quality. Perhaps (total guess) that's partly the case with newer Cummins.

Great review. Too bad you're not in main stream media where we could actually get the facts! I drive an '01 2500 SLT Cummins 24 valve, Allison tranny and 4WD.. Bought it in '06 with 45000 miles and its racked up 280000 and still runs great. Its a club cab with an 8' bed and that makes it so much more utilitarian. Problem is finding a newer model with the 8' bed. I don't really care that I have a full four door cab as the 8' bed makes it a real truck. I guess they're out there, but finding one isn't easy. There is the rusty quarter panels that seem to be inherent in many 2nd gen Dodge trucks, but everything still works (with the exception of the right outside mirror defroster, but I can live with that.) I'll probably be a Dodge fan from now on. I met a guy yesterday with a 3500 Cummins who traded his one year old Ford Power Stroke after replacing the tranny twice in 18000 miles. Dodge builds tough trucks! Your review has convinced me my next one will also be a Dodge!

FINALLY someone who understands this video lol! When thinking about my issues I had to search very deep to find something I hate about this truck but honestly for a 1st model the issues are minimal. The only thing I hope they fix though is the Aisin, I don’t care if it has the Aisin, just make it more refined and capable of holding more power

This comment is about your seat not moving up and down, but it does. The buttons to the left of the lumbar support that look like a seat move the seat up and down also back and forth as well as tilt.

I have been seriously looking at buying this exact config but your video probably saved me a ton of headaches. I had the Chevy 2500HD high country and I figured this would be comparable. I love the Ram interiors and that big 12” screen... Now I’m kind of thinking of waiting until this truck gets a good, smoothe, fast transmission.

If you plan on towing, I think you should go with the Aisin. If you plan on using it more for pleasure, the 68RFE will get the job done and it’s quicker off the line. The issues I had were so minimal that I give Chrysler credit for really stepping up and becoming a great/reliable brand.
One last thing the red lash fixed most of my issues and I plan to discuss this in a upcoming video.

The Aisin is a tow beast. It's a disservice to harsh on it for manners when used as a daily driver.

Great video, & FINALLY some talking about what’s wrong with these trucks of today because they don’t make ‘em like they used to! Trust me, you’ll find even more things wrong with the new Chevy Trucks today, especially the 1500 Silverado gas trucks! I’ve purchased 3 new Chevy Trucks over the last 12 months because the first two were 1500 Silverados & the first one from exactly one year ago is back sitting back at the dealership because the transmission went out, & the second one also had transmission problems in only one week, so now I have A diesel 3500 & hoping that transmission is better! Many other problems with all three of these trucks!

I have a Mega 3500 dually Longhorn and do not have any of those problems, maybe you just got a bad one. As far as the cameras go you should LEARN your truck how to quickly get to them, I mean it actually takes about 2 seconds and if you can't afford that time you have to take something off your plate. I LOVE my Longhorn and this is the 8th Ram I've had since 99 when they were Dodge and more than likely will keep foreverI am that satisfied with it. Still have my 02 the last of the loud ones.

I agree for sure about “learning” the cameras but I was taking a jab at RAM to minimize on those dead buttons. Still love my truck and probably will trade it for the next gen RAM!

A cummins engineer stated yrs ago the wort thing you can do is use these truck to go get groceries. People buy a truck that's one of the baddest towing g pickups ever made and then complain about issues when it has a few quirks when unloaded and barely straining the truck. They are built and tuned to load the hell out of them and run them hard.

Doesn’t the backup camera come on as soon as you put it in reverse? It does on my ‘17, anyway. Also, as for the dpf, previous years only reported a % (warning) if it was in danger of getting too full. The first warning being at 80% full. The new trucks report it continuously. All diesels produce soot no matter how you drive or what magic juice you put in the fuel. The dpf accumulates the soot to a point and then burns it off, all diesel trucks have done this since about 2007. I suggest learning what the gauge actually means before complaining about it.

Your the first RUclipsr that hates the Aisin. Seems like everyone else hates the 68rfe because of shift flare, doesn’t last and constantly going into 6th gear. I feel as though you are trying to judge your truck against a half ton truck and that’s not fair. But thanks for the video.

Chad Bell PD power diesel, eddies life, don’t like their Aisins. There’s a few more I’ve watched, sorry I can’t remember their names because I don’t subscribe to them. Vbelt has a few 68s with high miles no issues. My 68 is at 50k, tuned and deleted on 35s since around 7-8k miles. No issues at all. In my experience Aisins and 68s both upshift too quick unless you are in tow haul mode.
