@@gabrielwarkencharczuk3750 well, thanks for that info, but I did state that I was amazed at stumbling on this Duet - nothing to do with FIRST recording. Tho' now I understand that O'Toole was responsible for being the first to record this otherwise forgotten folk song. That's precious! I've heard it sung many times, at folk festivals, parties, pubs... and on RUclips. I have it on CD, bought late 1980s, when I became enchanted by Celtic melodies.
What a wonderful piece of film. It's O'Toole we have to thank for saving this great song from oblivion, with the help of Dominic Behan of course. Two of my favourite Irishmen here
My nan and I used to sneak off the the cinema on Wednesday afternoons (free study time at the convent?). So, I told her Harris was in a new film 'Man Called Horse'. Katie was silent through the entirety. The only thing she had to offer was 'Well, he's not changed a bit'. Seems 'Dickie' used to always talk about my nan 'fearsome woman' as she had to drag the lads off a truck in Limerick because they were off to fight in Spain of all places.
peter o toole gave the song to dominic behan in the early 1960`s. behan put it on an album back then. sean o riada may have `embellished `it. lots of theories as to the origin of the melody.
It has been reported that, while making "Deadly Trackers," Australian Rod Taylor would regularly kick the $#!+ out of Richard Harris for singing Irish sings.
KNOWN BY MY PASSPORT I AM A 'SASSENACH' AND AM SO VERY VERY PERFECT IN THE SASSENACH. ANYONE WITH SOME KIND OF A BRAIN WOULD KNOW THAT DEIDRE DOYLE IS A BIT NOT QUITE ...'ENGLISH'
I don't see anything funny about a couple of old men addicted to alcohol making fools of themselves. All I see is wasted talent and lost potential. What could they have been? And before anyone starts...this addiction has wasted countless lives and destroyed loving families. It's not adorable, charming, or delightful. Nor just a couple of old Irishmen having a good time. There's enjoying a drink now and then and then there's dependency. This is heartbreaking to me.
Every time I watch this - and there have been many - it gets even better.
Bravo!!!
Two great characters
I love this song. I never dreamed I would one day hear a rendition by Harris and O'Toole. Quite frankly I am dumbfounded... in a delightful way.
This song wasn"t forgot because of Peter O'Toole. He is responsible for the first recording of it in the 50s.

Who's the fiddle player? is it Brendan McGlinchey?
Does anyone know when was this filmed?
2000.
Comedy Gold.
Great to hear the great song being murdered by such talented actors
Dominic Behan???,Richard Harris
This almost beats Van Morrison's version.
Mighty. Brendan McGlinchey on fiddle.

It’s far from certain Peter O Toole was actually Irish.
Although a very good actor
As was Harris
He was born in England to an Irish father. O'Toole is buried in Ireland.
both gone now....
