This is acting. By great actors. A film made in 1971 about this germ warfare and it STILL is super creepy... Plus, they interject their science sense of humor into it. That makes it even better... When grave situations are presented, a sense of humor is much needed to wrap one's head around it. Making light of a bad situation by reducing its grave and dangerous abilities.

So if a woman is smart, that's not good enough -- she has to be gorgeous as well? One of the easiest ways to take a cheap shot at a woman is to criticize, denigrate, or ridicule what she looks like (which implies that a woman's physical appearance and whether or not men find her attractive is really the only value any woman can ever possibly have). Her character isn't there just to assist the men and be eye candy -- she's there to do an important job, not be a distraction. (And just in case you were thinking of saying that she didn't even do her job right...in the book, the character she portrays is a man. Men are just as capable of error as women are -- and actually, one of the points the film makes is that science always needs to leave room for the possibility of human and even mechanical error.) For that matter, the male characters aren't exactly GQ material themselves (especially the older dude). They didn't need to be, and probably shouldn't have been anyway -- one of the reasons why this film works as well as it does fifty years later and is believable is the level of realism, considering when it was made.
