You have inspired me to go from an initial "quick, down 'n' dirty" plug-in fiddle plan to a project more akin to yours. My motivation now is to create an instrument to convey my love of both the violin and of woodcraft. Thank you again. (And to think I was literally just a few hours from starting on ol' down 'n' dirty before happening upon your video... Whew!)
Hi David! Wonderful video! I was wondering what kind of paint you use (at 9:00 min. ) for the first layer, before sanding and re-applying the dark coating? Thanks in advance!
sonja vredeveld hi, many thanks for the kind words. The paint I used was a HMG high build 2K paint. I think it's pollyurathane based and it has a catalyst to cure the paint. It's usually used for industrial applications like in the automotive industry so it won't be effected by heat or chemicals once cured. I hope this helps :)

Would you happen to know of a guide I could read up on to help? Also, could you give the website where you bought the chin rest and neck of the violin?
Hi Anthony, sorry for the late reply. Many thanks for the kind words there. For the circuitry for my violin I just looked at current violins on the market and what types of circuitry they used, then tried to find something similar on EBay. As far as I could tell most of the ‘circuitry’ comes after the feed has left the violin like with a guitar. Most violins only have a Piezo crystal transducer pickup under or even inside of the bridge (some DIY violins also use acoustic to electric guitar pickups too); but for my violin I opted for one with an internal amplifier with a few basic controls as I originally wanted this for silent practicing. All of the items I bought were from sellers off EBay, but the exact listings have now expired. If you search and shop around you can find every part you’re looking for on there. (I seem to think that my neck, and tail piece set were bought from a Chinese seller called IFox.) I hope this helps.
Thanks for making this video. You could leave out the background music or tone it down quite a bit as it is a distraction to hear what you are saying. I am in the thinking phase of designing my own electric violin I bought some ebony finger boards and have found some designs I like on the internet. I have been researching fingerboard geometry and have found it is more involved than I anticipated so the thinking phase is where I will be for some time. Are you happy with you final result? My first impression when only watching into the beginning of your video so far is the weight might be a bit on the heavy side. anyway thanks again for sharing your process.

I was fortunate enough to have my acoustic violin to get all of the measurements and geometry from, and should you have access to one, reverse engineering an acoustic violin really does help. I am vary happy with the end result. the weight of the violin is comparable to that of a viola which I also play so I didn't mind the extra bit of weight too much. many thanks again for the kind words. :)
Has anyone seen this violin being played. I've been through multiple electric violin creation videos but no one ever plays their creations. Anyone else noticing this?
Hi William, yes I’d recommend learning on an acoustic violin first. From an acoustic it’s a lot easier to tell when you’re playing the notes in tune as the body and other strings resonate. It’s a little hard to describe, but you can almost hear a change in the sound when you’re hitting the right positions on the fingerboard. It’s also slightly easier to get a good sound from an acoustic as the resonance cancels out a lot of the ‘scratch’ from bowing that you would hear on an electric violin(until you’ve developed a good bowing technique.)
