Hull was always one of my favorite players , I’m a wings fan , and I like him when he played for the blues. Great hands , wicked shot . When he came to the wings he was a bit older , but still great . 2 kids and a goat was the name of his line in Detroit
Too bad y'all missed out on Bobby Orr. But Gordie didn't. And Montreal Gazette HOF hockey writer Red Fisher (from early '50s to 2010) saw 'em all too...and Howe (in '94) and Fisher (during a live interview on Hockey Night In Canada in about 2000) both said Orr was the best player they ever saw. Do ya actually think you know more about hockey than Howe and Fisher? Case closed.
Hull is probably the nicest and kindest of the NHL and hockey ambassadors. He loves the sport so much, very down to earth regardless of his legendary status and always speaking so nicely of other players.
Loved hearing this. 2002 wings were my team, they won when I was deep in depression as a teen. Was the only highlight of my year and it was a big one. When bowman loaded up the power play it was nuts. Like yzerman, feds, shanny then "second unit" with robatallie, dats, hull. Crazy
I seen those Russians with Detroit against the Leafs we were a few rows back of the Wings bench when the Russians skated past you could feel the breeze those guys where incredible
Yeah, here in Vancouver, we got up 2-0 in the playoffs, were like 'Holy Cow! We got a shot here!' then got STEAMROLLED 4 straight... That was the year Lidstrom wired one in from the frigging red line to start their charge. Yeah, 2002 Wings... Yikes....
@Smakbab9069 yeah well here in detroit when yall went up 2-0 i can assure you NO RED WINGS FANS were going "its all good well just win 4 straight" lol. we were shitting our pants when yall went up 2-0 lol. and if you remember, the wings limped into the playoffs. after clinching the #1 seed so early bowman rested all his star players and we just couldnt click offensively or defensively, nothing was going right, hasek was playing horrible, i was in 9th grade at the time and i remember talking to friends saying " this is gonna be the most epic failure of a team of all time if they blow this" so thank you so much for letting lidstrom get that center ice dagger lol. that was the moment everything just *clicked*
I remember being an 8 year old Australian kid who had never seen a game of ice hockey. Flicking through the channels on tv I found Pavel Datsyuk in his first year in the league playing a game. I was just in awe at what I was watching. My parents did everything they could to find Detroit redwing stuff for me. We never had jerseys here, but I remember my mum making me custom Hull and Datsyuk tshirts and I wore them every day alternating one after another. Hull doesn’t get enough credit for being such a great human being.
The "Russian 5" was a little before my time, but my dad used to talk about them in a nostalgic way and I would just say "yeah but now we have the Russian". Datsyuk was an absolute gem and got to benefit from playing with and developing alongside some of the best players to ever lace them up.
I’m in Windsor and witnessed the cup runs in 07/08 back to back .. the Joe Louis was pure magic . Crossing the border , walking past the bums after giving a sketchy dude 20 bucks not to bust your windows up those iconic stairs into the Joe . Down the Olympia room do get a drink before watching that arena come alive man .. yuri hudler at the cup parade “ lezzz gooo weeed waaaaaang “ absolutely plastered , as a seagull poops on me 😂
Datsyuk is still the most underrated hall of famer of all time! Dude could put up 100+ points every season if that’s all he wanted to do. Man I miss those days!
Brett I want you to know that it's because of you that I became a St Louis blues fan. My all-time favorite player. I remember running around the living room as a kid wearing a St Louis blues Brett hull jersey.
@1:28 That is a fantastic point. People will always remember Datsyuk for his amazing skill (made everything look easy) but he was only able to do that because he was a strong skater. Guys, if they could ever catch him, were never able to just push him around. Datsyuk really is a "1 of 1" type of player.
People forget that it was a big deal when Russians joined the NHL and that it affected the game in some ways. I remember when the Blues brought in "Big V" and "Little V" Vitali's Prokhorov, Karamnov, and Igor Korolev (RIP). I think I got Korolev's autograph after a practice, or maybe one of those Target store appearances. He might have been at the one with Cujo, but I feel like that was Bob Bassen. I'm so glad I got to experience the era these guys come from.
Growing up in Ann Arbor in the mid 90s was like growing up in the middle of a Hockey Renaissance; Michigan won the NCAA National Championship in '96 and '98 and of course the Wings son the Cup in '97, '98 (and of course later in '02 and '08). But being a teenage hockey fan in Michigan in the mid 90s was awesome. I'll never forget how all the celebrations had the awful shadow cast over them in '97 after the car crash. Konstantinov would've been an HOFer; he was incredible. To think the Wings had a young Konstantinov and a young Lidstrom (among others) in their Blue Line. Those teams were insane. Also, F the Avs and Claude Lemieux for eternity.
I’d much rather watch Pavels highlights on you tube, and the hosts of the shows reaction to seeing him for the first time, than watch a current NHL game.
@travisp5747 True. Can you imagine Datsyuk instead of Kozlov on the R5? No shade at Kozzie who was much better than many people realize, but Pav's the Magic Man.
Yeah crazy take by him imo. As far as player type and the results, they were pretty damn close. Biggest difference, Pavel had all time gr8 hands and Sergei had all time gr8 skating. 2 of the top 2-way players ever
He didn’t elaborate, but he was implying Datsyuk barely scratched the surface of what he was capable of in terms of productivity. Toyed with the opposition, played a complete game, but never did things to maximize his numbers.
He was talking about pure skill with the puck like keep aways and dekes. And Datsyuk is far better at that than arguably any one ever. Fedorov used his skill set more effectively and with greater results, but he definitely did not possess the hands and creative of Datsyuk. Hully is 💯 correct
Love Hully but blown take on Feds. I've seen 91 live a dozen times and Dats 7 times. Both are insanely great but Feds was just as good if not better than Dats. He won a Hart and Selke. Just pull up tape and see .
Brett knows more than us and he saw it up close. I think his point is about individual skills, not necessarily who gave you the better chance to win. Fedorov could do everything and do it at a super high level as a pure athlete, but Datsyuk was an artist. He was genuinely unique.
That’s why Don Cherry was such a blowhard in the late 90s. He whined about Europeans beinging soft. When it was the Europeans playing puck possession. While the Canadians were still being goons and playing dump and chase. The game had passed Cherry by.
Yea i remember thinking how awesome that was and we had a real shot at a 3 peat! I think we just ran out of gas. I was really excited to get Ranford because he had played so good against us for the oilers (?) .. But it wasnt to be ..
Sorr, but Ken Holland is overrated as a GM. He rode the tail of Devellano and put together lopsided contracts that buried the team for years now. It is no wonder once the playoff run was over he left and has been doing nothing good for his teams.
Three levels of Swedes on the Wings- - Lidstrom is the only Swedish "legend" that played on the Wings. - Zetterberg did some legendary things while on the Wings. The first Cup final against Pens was awesome...got robbed the second time. He was a good, strong Captain. - Franzen, before he started getting concussed, was a beast. Holmstrom and Kronwall were good but not great. Hopefully, some of the Swedes on our team now grow to become on Zetterberg/Franzen level.
I disliked hockey in late 90s and early 2000s, my Sabres had a 22-25 mill payroll and Dallas and Detroit was 65-80 million, no salary cap. League is much better today as far as small market teams having a chance.
The league is better? Pretty much every TV outlet dropped hockey several years ago. Although it's came back a bit, ratings are down. The South doesn't watch hockey and they are winning the Cups. Kevin B
@j@jenneferbeck7049ckey today is way more exciting than trap years with so many 0-0 ties, watching teams sit back all game, hooking, holding, interference allowed. The speed of the game the last 8 years is insane! Salary cap is good, teams like my Sabres now have a chance to win.
Hardly anyone watched hockey in year 2000, 2025 Performance: The 2025 Stanley Cup Final averaged 2.5 million viewers, with an average rating of 1.5. First-round playoff games on ESPN/ABC averaged 727,000 viewers. 2000 Context: The 1999-2000 season saw a 1.4 rating for NHL games on ABC, which dropped to a 1.1 the following season.
@RemysDad1971I don't dispute that. But look at which cities watch the most hockey. Vegas is decent, but they are new. No other warm weather cities get good ratings. Look at the Cup Finals ratings and compare cities. Its not close. Kevin B
the russian influx kinda ruined the nhl- it was better to have the occasional intl series and the hatred - that was the best also it only demonstrated that illitch was desperate and basically bought the players coach etc im from detroit and never really was the same fan again even though they won cups -it always seemed kinda tainted - didnt build through farm system and trades/free agents
Assembling a mythical team that bridged the gap between Soviet, European and Canadian systems was inspiring and ultimately necessary. What the NHL failed to do after that is the league's problem, no one else's.
@daveconleyportfolio5192 why do you think it was inspiring and necessary? that red wings team was bought and yes europeans skated better at the time but it took away the grittiness of the north american style and the league suffered in natl popularity ever since -it has become a niche sport with too many foreigners that people dont care about or even know their names nd of all things the all time scoring leafer is now a russian (ugh!) bettman is not likable and expansion has diluted talent- but thats another topic
Quit parroting don cherry and his blowhard 1970s dump and chase and being a goon hockey. The game changed in the 90s. To win the Cup you needed puck possesion and skill.
@alwillk hockey was better then ratings and popularity support that its a blip on the radar now - this is my opinion didnt know cherry has similar take it was more intense before all the foreigners and much more hatred when we played internationally - that was xciting if u missed it sorry for you
Mr hull ty and 8 other hall of farmers we had Wendel clark still happy we picked u up in 99 to three peat i even was fortunate to see u both play in the Wheeled Wing And Brett u should of took up the f1 Sim they're fun and of course Sergei was Into f1 classic And Mr Lindstrom was the nicest person to ever meet and sign my photo and all you guys were ❤ guys great show Go wings
I love the way Hull loves Datsyuk. Its like it invigorated his career.
The "Two Kids and an Old Goat" line.
It's like Bobby and Brett Hull playing on the same line.
Hull was always one of my favorite players , I’m a wings fan , and I like him when he played for the blues. Great hands , wicked shot . When he came to the wings he was a bit older , but still great . 2 kids and a goat was the name of his line in Detroit
Datsuyk is still my favorite player of all time, I’m 61 from Minnesota and I’ve seen em all, but Datsyuk was a 500 yr flood.
Same here
Too bad y'all missed out on Bobby Orr. But Gordie didn't. @4orrcountrywho cares about theirs or your oppinion hes my favorite and most skilled player ever 🐐
@bozidarborojevic4131"Keep an eye on number 13. Like Gordie Howe, he's a godsend. He won't be playing for us forever!" Someone famous said...
@4orrcountry cram it clown
Hull is probably the nicest and kindest of the NHL and hockey ambassadors. He loves the sport so much, very down to earth regardless of his legendary status and always speaking so nicely of other players.
Most enormous appetite, too.
No disrespect. Just being factual.
Those lineups were damn near illegal. So good.
Lol, no shit! Never again
Datsyuk was insane
It was awesome time in red wing history!
Pavel was extremely strong on his skates, it’s hard to believe he played on the same team as Sergei. The Wings were loaded with talent.
True. Wings v Avs. Great hockey
That team was the blues kryptonite. I loved watching those games and series.
Loved hearing this. 2002 wings were my team, they won when I was deep in depression as a teen. Was the only highlight of my year and it was a big one. When bowman loaded up the power play it was nuts. Like yzerman, feds, shanny then "second unit" with robatallie, dats, hull. Crazy

Господи, я помню как играл Халл, какой был молодой и худой. Казалось это было вчера. Время летит невероятно быстро 😢
Hully truly is "Golden." He was made for this podcasting stuff!
2002 Red Wings were playing in “God” mode.
With no salary cap, Illich spent the money
That team might've been one of the best ever
Yeah, here in Vancouver, we got up 2-0 in the playoffs, were like 'Holy Cow! We got a shot here!' then got STEAMROLLED 4 straight... That was the year Lidstrom wired one in from the frigging red line to start their charge. Yeah, 2002 Wings... Yikes....

Every kid was a red wings fan😅
I remember being an 8 year old Australian kid who had never seen a game of ice hockey. Flicking through the channels on tv I found Pavel Datsyuk in his first year in the league playing a game. Had Datsyuk been on those teams no one would have touched a puck if they weren’t wearing red and white .
My favorite moment is when Datsyuk robbed Jagr in his zone, Hull didn't go, but ran at full speed to support him, holding his stick like a sword.
Someone who is not afraid to speak the truth.
The Red Wings were the landing place for some of the best players to ever come over from Russia. The pure skill levels of these guys was incredible.
As a Red Wing fan one of Datsyuks best and funniest moments was when he and Corey Perry dropped the gloves. Pavel handled himself just fine.
This is a great podcast! very entertaining!!
When he was a Leaf, I never heard anyone booed so loudly at MLG. We'll gladly take him! 55. Larry Murphy
I broke many of friends couches celebrating for Datsyuk goals back in the day
I’m in Windsor and witnessed the cup runs in 07/08 back to back .. the Joe Louis was pure magic . DATTTSSSYYUUUUUKKKKKK
Thank you Hull and the boys for inviting us into your living room. Great stories from great men. Keep up the good work and just subscribed!
I remember Hull scoring a goal while shorthanded 2men, 5 on 3. Dont forget Doug Brown, played with the Russians so much, they used to call him Brownov
Doug Brown was the Wings' token American. He had great chemistry with the Russians.
Brett Hull is awesome!
Datsyuk is still the most underrated hall of famer of all time! Dude could put up 100+ points every season if that’s all he wanted to do. Man I miss those days!
Luc Robitaille was on a recent other podcast and the Hull Datysuk stories are hilarious, get some Wings on the podcast!! Thanks and keep it up
Brett I want you to know that it's because of you that I became a St Louis blues fan.
My all-time favorite player. I remember running around the living room as a kid wearing a St Louis blues Brett hull jersey.

Datsyuk really is a "1 of 1" type of player.
I believe Hull was talking about Mathieu Dandenault and not J.J. Daigneault. J. J. Daigneault never played with Detroit.
Yeah, dandy was never a leaf but he was a Hab. Tough fast and played both d and lw ❤
he prob thought damn frenchies all the same!
Thought this too
Awesome show boys
Hull such a legend and so symphatic. The Detroit-Roster 2002 was just unfair …
People forget that it was a big deal when Russians joined the NHL and that it affected the game in some ways. I remember when the Blues brought in "Big V" and "Little V" Vitali's Prokhorov, Karamnov, and Igor Korolev (RIP). Yeah. What a blowhard don cherry turned out to be. Europeans dominated. While Canadians were still playing dump and chase and being goons.
Hully sure loves Datsyuk as he should! What a pleasure to watch them together in Detroit. Pavel was sick ass ridiculous
There hasn't been a more talented player in the NHL since Pavel retired. period
I can't imagine how Al McInnis shot would be like with the new technology today or and of the older guys.
Funny! I remember The Avalanche Teams.
Federov made me a hockey fan.
Growing up in Ann Arbor in the mid 90s was like growing up in the middle of a Hockey Renaissance; Michigan won the NCAA National Championship in '96 and '98 and of course the Wings son the Cup in '97, '98 (and of course later in '02 and '08). Also, F the Avs and Claude Lemieux for eternity.
My favorite Pavs moment was him beating the holy living shit hell outta Katie Perry in his only fight 🤣🤣🤣
BOT! That doesn’t make sense. Katy Perry wasn’t born and that wasn’t Pavel Datsyuk s nickname! 🤡
@RightisRight-pt2qj
Im assuming he’s calling “Ryan Perry” that as a joke. If so that’s hilarious
Katie Perry 😂
Datsyukian Deke!
Why cant I listen to this Pod in the U.S.? Its not available.
That roster was insane! They deserved the cup !
They should have one a couple more cups, actually
@MS4RSyep. I’m a wings fan and we underperformed a lot of those years. I’m still happy with the cups though lol
@peterdragon6367 The league did everyone else a favor by putting Detroit in the Western Conference. They had more shitty road trips than anyone.
I’d much rather watch Pavels highlights on you tube, and the hosts of the shows reaction to seeing him for the first time, than watch a current NHL game.
Red wings getting the Russian 5 is reminiscent of the modern Dodgers
Jude dronin, bill goldsworthy, Danny grant, bobby Smith, Reed Larson. You seen all the great?
What about the Russian 5 with Detroit
the "RED LINE", Datzuk, Fetisov, Larionov, Kozlov, Federov!
The most skilled line in the history of hockey!!!
Datsyuk didn’t play with Fetisov or Kozlov but I get your point lol
Vladimir Konstantinov was the fifth member of the Russian Five. Datsyuk joined the team after the time of Kozlov, Fetisov, and Konstantinov.
@G7M9W
He even donned the same number as Kozlov
@travisp5747 True. Can you imagine Datsyuk instead of Kozlov on the R5? No shade at Kozzie who was much better than many people realize, but Pav's the Magic Man.
Ups and downs from the Wings . NHL is a Business . You can´t always Win .
Who am I to disagree with Brett Hull but Fedorov not even close to Pavel?
Yeah crazy take by him imo. As far as player type and the results, they were pretty damn close. Biggest difference, Pavel had all time gr8 hands and Sergei had all time gr8 skating. 2 of the top 2-way players ever
He didn’t elaborate, but he was implying Datsyuk barely scratched the surface of what he was capable of in terms of productivity. Toyed with the opposition, played a complete game, but never did things to maximize his numbers.
Hully is blistered.
He was talking about pure skill with the puck like keep aways and dekes. And Datsyuk is far better at that than arguably any one ever. Fedorov used his skill set more effectively and with greater results, but he definitely did not possess the hands and creative of Datsyuk. Hully is 💯 correct
@am1lli0n8bang on with this comment mate. Very well put!
It was the people around Holland and the talented players that made Detroit successful. Holland isn't what people think he is.
are we still paying Abdelkader or no?
@Dirk-bu7fbEXACTLY 💯
Who is that with Hully? Is that Wendel Clark?
They sure picked the right color.
JJ Daigneault??? Never played for the Wings.
Wendel was the best! He could do it all…really too bad his back kept him from playing longer and harder, awesome snap shot, and not to be f$@#ed with.
Yeah I’ll still go with the Jets opinion six days a week and twice on Sunday
That’s why Don Cherry was such a blowhard in the late 90s. He whined about Europeans beinging soft. When it was the Europeans playing puck possession. While the Canadians were still being goons and playing dump and chase. The game had passed Cherry by.
Cherry should have asked for a Wings exemption. For a while it seemed like every tough Russian or Swede ended up in Detroit.
Now that number 91 is retired we need to see 13 retired!!!
I wish we wouldn't have crapped our pants in 99 when we got clark cheli ulf and ranford and Colorado destroyed us
Yea i remember thinking how awesome that was and we had a real shot at a 3 peat! I think we just ran out of gas. I was really excited to get Ranford because he had played so good against us for the oilers (?) .. But it wasnt to be ..
Forsberg is another guy who could have scored way more than he did.
Anybody would be pretty darn good if their government is threatening to not feed your family if you don’t produce gold medals!!!
Nonsense. Imperialist propaganda.
That's Communism for you.
Evolve yr brain, fookin' Donkey..
Holland only proved he could win with no salary cap and an owner willing to spend. The salary cap exposed Holland as a really poor GM.
Hull looks like he’d get tired taking a piss nowadays.
Sorr, but Ken Holland is overrated as a GM. He rode the tail of Devellano and put together lopsided contracts that buried the team for years now. It is no wonder once the playoff run was over he left and has been doing nothing good for his teams.
I think it's time for the Swedish Wing Legends to be discussed...
Three levels of Swedes on the Wings-
- Lidstrom is the only Swedish "legend" that played on the Wings.
Right. There's an swedish travel agency called Wings. Their prices are Legends

"No Russian will ever play for the Toronto Maple Leafs". Harold Ballard, the worst and most destructive NHL owner ever
A socialist saying that about players from a communist state is almost funny, slightly ironic though.
Alex Meruelo of the Phoenix Coyotes has to be in that conversation also. Didn’t they play some of their home games in a college rink?
Hull wasnt a chump either, he had hell of a powerful slap-shot
Hully is the best!… only disappointing thing about this pod cast is his dad unfortunately will never be on it…
the russian influx kinda ruined the nhl- it was better to have the occasional intl series and the hatred - that was the best also it only demonstrated that illitch was desperate and basically bought the players coach etc im from detroit and never really was the same fan again even though they won cups -it always seemed kinda tainted - didnt build through farm system and trades/free agents
