  • With the scorching Aussie sun, having an aircon unit in your caravan or bus can make all the difference. When rebuilding our 1993 4wd Toyota Coaster bus, an aircon unit was at the top of our appliance list for the comfort factor.
    Introducing the Truma Saphir Under-Bunk Air Conditioner - one of the most popular caravan air conditioner units on the market, designed specifically to withstand the challenging weather conditions in Australia.

    Nice installation, nice work.
    How loud is the unit?
    I went with a 9,000 btu mini split heat pump, for the efficiency and how quite they are.
    Definitely a thumbs up for the video 👍

      Thank you! :) There is a two-part video series coming. It's a difficult one as there are a few moving parts and we really want to do a good video everyone can understand. But it's all filmed. Just need to do the wizard editing stuff.

    Coming along nicely. I would have just painted that vent white. Also, love your Victron setup. Do you have a more detailed installation video on that other than the 1 min short?

      Thanks so much! Really appreciate it. 😄 Well, the unit is under our mattress and it kind of acts like a huge soundproofing thing. But we have never really noticed the sound at all. We heard a few people doing that! It's a good option I think. We didn't have the space at the back of our bus as we have a ladder where most people put it.

    Hey mate, love the install, I'm installing one right now with the same concept. My unit is located in a seperate "room" to what I'm cooling. I think you missed a vital component which is sold as an additional accessory for this unit. This is applicable for both of our applications in order to circulate and regulate the air temperature properly as well as balance the positive and negative pressure produced by your air conditioner. In order for you to recycle the air in the space you are cooling properly and for the sensor to regulate the temperature properly you should have installed an additional accessory part number: 40090-59100. With the way you installed this unit you are still sucking air from the "garage" area because the temperature sensor for the unit is on the face of the unit. I understand the concept of the vent you installed but you need this accessory so when the unit sucks the air in it will go through this accessory to the sensor and you will be able to regulate the set temperature more efficiently and your air compressor won't work as hard. Otherwise your unit will continue to suck air from the other space in your bus in an effort to bring that air down to the desired temperature.

      Hey Nick. Thanks for this I didn't know this piece existed. I understand what you mean. Our space is a bit restricted to put something like this in... however I'm going to try make it work. Thanks so much for the tip and the time you took to explain it.

    A great video.
    Just found your channel.
    Would love to see another video now it’s installed, & what the vents are like under the bus.
    Also how’s the fins under the bus going on the air cond with all the dust.

    hey guys... very helpful video.
    We're just about to fit one of these to our off road van and I have some questions (if you have the time)...
    is there, or did you fit, any kind of dust filter(s) underneath the vehicle? All I can see is 4 holes that will let bulldust in. If not into the vehicle, at the very least into the air con unit itself.

      Hey guys thanks so much! Glad you liked it. So the only dust seal we used in at 3:14 in the video. You can get it at most caravan stores. We don't have any problems with dust getting into the bus with this seal. They also do provide you with chicken wire type stuff that keeps anything large out.

    Great video, we have a Mercedes Vario which is probably as close as you can get to a Coaster over here in the UK. Like you we have all our bits installed, so need to think out some ways to run the ducting. How many amp hours are you using in those 4-5 hours over night? Thanks for the vid - new sub here for sure.

      @saltandcharcoal  Год назад

      Ah awesome vehicle! So we have 300amps at 24 volts. We could probably go a little longer if we are using the power wisely. Although, we find we just put it on a timer to stop at around midnight and then the bus normally stays pretty cool overnight with our insulation. We also have 2 fans that we run all night.

    As all the workings are inside the van does it not put some heat in the van, like those portable air con units even with exhaust ducting the machine generates heat? Looking at the web they don’t list the BTU

      We keep it under the bed where it is in an isolated area from the main cabin. I haven't noticed it gets hot at all. To be honest it wouldn't make a difference. It's mainly the windows that give you trouble.

    Hiya. I wonder if you could tell me how you are getting on with your trauma aircon. We are looking at putting in to a van build over having an on roof type. Would you recommend it? Thank you

    • @saltandcharcoal
      @saltandcharcoal  Год назад +1

      Hey! Loving it at the moment. We would recommend it. If it's a smaller van, make sure you think about space though. It does take up a little bit of room on the inside of your bus/van. The most important part is you get the ducting to everywhere in the van to ensure it cools evenly.

      @@saltandcharcoal we have an Iveco daily lwb and it's the company that are doing the build for us that have suggested this aircon. It's purely for the couple of weeks we get hot weather in the UK so s long as it cools the space a little that's helpful. We are leaving our bulkhead in so it won't have to fight against what comes through the windscreen and we aren't having loads of large windows either. We have a cat and I'm more concerned for her than us to be honest. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply xx

    Hi! If i dont have outer power supply at camping site and If i use 2x 120Ah AGM batteries parallel are they gonna feed the AC unit overnight when van is well insulated. Its short wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter. Also what batteries are you using?

    • @saltandcharcoal
      @saltandcharcoal  Год назад +1

      Hey man! So 2x AGM batteries would only give you 120amps total. As you can only use 50% of AGM batteries, otherwise they deteriorate faster. Assuming you are running 12 volt you need an inverter to get 240 volt. Even still you probably would only get an two or three hours of aircon usage at night. That's in a perfect scenario where your battery would be completely full and you wouldn't be using it for lights or anything else, etc. Definitely recommend getting external 240 volt outlet or upgrading your battery pack.

      @@saltandcharcoal actually what I ment is that I have 2x 120Ah batteries so it’s 240Ah. Thanks for an answer!
