OMG Go Tell Aunt Rhody! That brought back some memories. I had completely forgotten that I was a Suzuki kid. I remember the book, having it around my violin case, and always wondering what the Suzuki method really meant. I think like you I fizzled out with violin but kept a life long love of music as a result. Went on to piano, guitar, and now as an adult I've been learning tenor sax.
Suzuki kid and parent. It was ok for me. Transferred to different music after book 4. My non Suzuki teacher said I was the worst student she has ever had - but I don’t think that was Suzuki’s fault... My youngest tried Suzuki guitar. He lost interest with the endless variations. He was much happier after learning to read music. I never ever ever ever ever want to hear Twinkle Twinkle Littler Star again.
Honestly can't remember the method I learned piano with when I was younger. All I know is that the method was experimental and my sight reading was nonexistent. I would just wait for my teacher to play an example of it and then mimic what he did. Started playing cello later in life and found that I had really good intonation but my sight reading was lacking. Funny enough, I started learning cello with the suzuki books and I also stopped using them after starting book 4.
OK it seems Suzuki Method had the same "Mad Science" effect it did on you as it did on me. Fun! I went through all the books until it was futile. Awww my Mom is a trooper hey? Theres at least 10 books!!!!! Tuka Tuka Tee Tee anyone? .....this must have been so agonizing for anyone in range!!!! Buttttt....its a beautiful way to teach pitch, timing and Practice to children. Essential life tools. Then it gets a bit too serious!! Where next right? Now this 17 yr old kid is an actual Violinist!!! Oh Crap!! 14 years of Suzuki paid off though, another 10 yrs with overpriced teachers from Conservatories, the good ones!...... Boom guess who won all the competitions ....played with a few Orchestras even!! Music and the life skills learned with this path still pays my bills today
