    I was virtually finished with my scientific paper, but I ran into a problem so I decided to put it on ice. I then called for help from scientists around the world for assistance.

    • @bbclearningenglish
      @bbclearningenglish  Год назад +54

      Great - one small thing: 'Both help' and 'assistance' have similar meanings so you don't need to include both in your sentence. You could say 'I called for assistance from scientists around the world.' Or, you could replace the word 'assistance' with the word 'help'!

    In English, you say, put on ice. In Chinese, we say, 凍結. Also, the meaning of the characters is the same as the words in English.

    Friendly advice for English learners 🌎…be very intentional about the English media that you choose to listen to 🎧. In my opinion, I recommend listening to interviews or podcasts instead of dramatic films 🎬, as they simulate more realistic conversations 💬 🇨🇦

    Is this version better? I virtually finished my scientific paper. However, I ran into a roadblock, so I decided to put the publishing of the paper on ice. I thought about the problem, but I couldn't solve it. I then decided to call for assistance from scientists around the world.
    By the way, how do I use finish? Should I say 'I virtually finished my work' or ' I am virtually finished with my work'?

    When spoken she said "I was virtually on the bus..." but the written text says "at the bus". Surely it should be "at the bus stop". No?

  • @ambedkarkorapati3870
    @ambedkarkorapati3870 Год назад +2

    Good evening presenters of the video.Thank you for your productive and resourceful videos on a wide range of subjects. In this video, while referring to the casual usage of "virtually" Beth gave the example "I was virtually on the bus when it left without me".While summing up, it was changed to " I was at the bus when it left without me " I think " on" is the correct preposition in the said context. But why is the preposition "at" used? I am a little perplexed to make sense. Are "on" and "at" both acceptable there? I would be grateful if the BBC could clarify the correctness of the preposition "at" there. In my opinion,a premium institution like BBC never errs.

    • @bbclearningenglish
      @bbclearningenglish  Год назад +2

      Hello. Thanks for your question - the use of preposition changes the meaning slightly here. 'On' the bus refers to actually sitting inside the bus, whereas 'at' the bus refers to being at the place where the bus is - maybe at the bus stop. So both are correct in this example, but the meaning changes slightly.
