Exactly, we probably butcher the names of places in their country. Americans especially pronounce things the way they are spelt, here in Australia not so much.
Tip to the wise, get yourself a UHF two way radio and then set it to channel 40 which is the frequency for all highway travellers. You can then listen as regular travellers swap details about road conditions ahead as well as delays.
You are getting some good advice. Here's my "two bobs worth". Some of the nicest spots in north Queensland are on the Atherton Tableland. To many attractions to list here but you should definitely see the volcanic crater lakes at Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine. One of my favourite spots is out along Boar Pocket road, right at the top of the Gillies highway. Not so busy as the other parts and has the Cathedral fig tree along the way and one of the nicest upland rain forest walks to Mobo Creek. Usually quiet, lots of birds and platypus in the creek (if you are lucky). If you keep going along the dirt road, you'll come across the forestry camping areas at Tinaroo dam. Kauri Creek and Fong On Bay are probably the pick. There is a fee but it's minimal. Behind the lovely little township of Yungaburra is Petersen Creek and you may see tree kangaroos and platypus along that walk. This time of year, keep an eye on the weather and have a healthy respect for the crocs and stingers in the coastal waters. Enjoy your holiday. Just remembered, if you end up walking in the rainforest, stick to tracks and be mindful of the stinging tree, (Dendrocnide moroides ). It has a big heart shape leaf and a decent sting from that for your children could be problematic.
Love your commentaries. Welcome to Australia. Your positivity of Australia is inspiring. We know we live in one of the best countries but don’t know how the rest of the world Think. Keep up your research of destinations before you arrive. Please keep your videos coming.
Things I love to do in Cairns. 1. Take the train up to Kuranda - they have a nice Butterfly place up there, as well as a Bird park - then take the Skyrail back down. I prefer to do it this way, as the view out over Cairns and out to Green Island is spectacular as you crest the last ridge. 2. Take a trip out to Green Island - it's lovely and there's a nice Crocodile park there too. Hope you have a great time.
Love following along on this adventure. I have family and friends around the Cairns area and I’ve told them about your travels and that you are on RUclips and everything and they said please let me know if you need anything at all and they are more than willing to help if you need it ❤️
On our way back stop off at Babinda Kayacks and do the trip down the Babinda Creek it is absolutely one of the most beautiful family things to do. Have been a Cairns local for 30years so much to see. Don’t forget the Atherton tablelands.
Make sure you go to the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a must. Also if you go inland there’s some beautiful swimming pools. Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation. There’s cape York but that might be to high up for you.
The highway goes right around Australia that's why its over 14,000 ks. Melbourne to Cairns is just a small part of it. The big trucks are called B doubles. Go further west and some will be towing 4 trailers so double as long. The stacks with the smoke are most likely a sugarcane mill.
It's great seeing you 2 sharing the driving. I've found through trial and error that 36 hours non stop even in a bus, Brisbane to Cairns eg is just too much. Better to break it into 9 hour stretches with overnight stops to catch some zzz and stretch your legs.
Brisbane to Cairns is further than Brisbane to Melbourne! (1,142 miles) Bne > Mel 1,105 miles. Have a dip at Josephine Falls. There are several rockpools and slides. Some tame, others deep.
If you can goto Etty Bay Beach and Mission Beach. Also around the Elandra Resort, at Licuala Lodge, and along the Dreaming Trail walking track. In the early morning and late afternoon to see Cassowaries in the beaches. Remember to keep a distance as they are easy to scare and dangerous when angry.
We pronounce the word 'air' as it is in 'Cairns'. So to the Aussies, we are saying the letter 'R', but to most foreigners, they likely will hear it as a silent letter. 😄
You guys are doing it right! If you get a chance Hartleys Crocodile Adventures are the premiere place to see wildlife since the Cairns zoo closed down. Mossman Gorge just north of Port Douglas has some great walks and the swim in the Gorge if the conditions are right is amazing. Enjoy!
I drove Brisbane to Cooktown on my bike during Covid. That first stretch is mind numbing. Palm cove and Trinity beach north of Cairns I thought were nice.
Longest single drive I've done in Australia is from Philip Island in Victoria to Brisbane in Queensland. We left at 9:00am Philip Island and arrived in Brisbane at 3:30am the next morning, so 18.5 hours straight. Was ultra buggered (tired) by the end of that. Went to Philip Island for the 1989 1st 500cc MotoGP motorbike championship race there and where Wayne Gardner won, an Australian, was awesome. I was 28 back then, now 63.
Driving at night is super dangerous especially in the middle of Australia where animals like camels or other animals stand in the middle of roads at night. You're driving one of the most complained about sections of roads in Australia (by Australians). Road truck trains come with up to 3 extra carriages. But regardless cool video. Stay safe 🤙🇦🇺
G'day, Once you start heading inland and away from the more populated coastal areas you will see the big rigs on the roads (3 or 4 trailers and well over 50 meters, 150 feet) If you are on narrow paved roads, move to the sholder and let them use the black top. If you try and force other road users onto the dirt, be prepared for stones through the windscreen. If you are wanting to overtake a truck on dirt be prepared for them to move onto the wrong side of the road. They do this so you can overtake with clear vision out of the dust they are creating. This is just one of the unwritten rules and as such is not an absolute. A cheap UHF 2 way radio from somewhere like ARB or TJM might be handy so you can communicate with truck before passing. They don't need to have extra antennas and the sales rep should be able to advise you on usage, Get one that is 12 volt rechargable so it is always ready to be used.
@@TheWickmansLife2024 A hand held UHF radio from TJM or ARB are most likely to be one of the better well known/trusted brand rather than the "Cheap" ones found in some outlets. A lot of people who drive in rural areas have UHF radios mounted in theis vehicles (I do). I also have a hand held that has an optinal "Pork Chop" mike.
Just thought you might want to listen to a song to remind you of FNQ (far North Queensland) The band is Ganggarjang and the song is Sounds of then . Hope you enjoy your travels. Cheers Keith and Margs 😊
Things to do. Check the conditions from locals beforehand but in the Daintree, you should be able to get through to Bloomfield via the Bloomfield track (iconic). At the other end, you have the Lion’s Den. You can camp there or at Home Rule at Rossville (both very special). From there, make it to Cooktown (arguably Australia’s oldest town). For the best fish, have a feed at either the RSL or Bowl’s club. Spend a night at Elim Beach, about an hour north of Cooktown. Come back via the Mulligan Highway to Cairns. On the way check out the Quinkins (aboriginal art work at split rock) and views from the Byerstown range never get boring. If you like, you could even prospect for gold.
As someone else said, the stacks are from a sugar mill. During the harvest season, the fuel used to operate the factory is the leftover sugar cane plant, which is called bagasse. The factories are self-sufficient for power and export electricity into the power grid. Each mill has its own private narrow guage rail network to transport the harvest sufar cane to the factories. Please be careful travelling at night as there is a lot of wildlife out next to the roads eating the grass beside the road. You'll end up seeing lots of dead kangaroos on the road.
Looks like a huge road trip - well done family! We recently drove 33 hours from WA back to our home town in Qld and it was a lot... :P Have fun and enjoy Cairns, it's a beautiful spot

@@TheWickmansLife2024 yes, once you get on the road you realise just how big Australia is and how far everything is from each other on the other side 😂
