After revisiting Sarah My Story with you, Shauna, I have come to the realization that Andrew had been trained from childhood that his role in the family was to support his mother, the Queen. It makes perfect sense to me now why he failed to support Fergie who was acting irresponsibly in trying to satisfy her own needs over duty to the crown. In contrast, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, understands the assignment and carries out her duty to crown and country effectively while still managing to raise a beautiful family and maintaining a loving relationship with Prince Edward.

Unless it’s a small family business, in which corporation can you speak to the CEO or senior executives directly? You have to call their assistant and set up a meeting at their convenience. If they’re even willing to take the meeting! Their assistant will inquire as to the nature of the request and may direct you elsewhere to get help. The reality is that the CEO has direct reports who are supposed to deal with issues and the only time someone should go directly to the top exec is if there is a serious issue that is illegal or unethical that could hurt someone or the business and the matter hasn’t been addressed. You normally would go to your supervisor or HR. It amazes me that Sarah or Markle think senior royals are available on demand. It seems they overestimated their importance and misunderstood the distinction between personal and professional relationships.

I vaguely recall Sarah being on the Oprah show many years ago. It was after she and Andrew had separated. She was basically complaining about having to earn an income because of her high debt load and her reduced circumstances. I recall her going on about living in a cottage (provided for her and her two daughters). I specifically recall Sarah saying, "Yes, a cottage! Can you imagine, the Queen's grandchildren living in a cottage!" The audience and viewers were shown pictures of said cottage. I recall thinking, good lord what is she complaining about. I'd love to have that "cottage" for a home.
Oprah, who was still a decent journalist at that time, called Sarah out; pointed out her victim/martyr mentality and her flawed relationship with money. To Oprah's credit she offered to help Sarah find some balance - by working on herself, putting her in touch with professionals. Sarah would return to the Oprah show a few times after that.
I've not be particularly fond of Sarah; never really disliked her either. At times I have found her amusing, kind-hearted, generous and yet peevish. I've always felt there was something lacking in her upbringing and, perhaps, her own character. When she was young she was very immature and naive. Her book is providing some insight for all this; her perspective of course. Well, maybe I'll buy her book after all. but not until Shauna has completed her book review. 🙂

I have a different opinion to the one generally held on the topic of the late Princess Diana’s dress. She embodied the vision of the fairytale princess. Her height and slim build enabled her to carry the large sleeves and ballgown skirt and that lace was just opulent and dreamy. The fabric crumpled too easily but her tiara glittered above the cloud of tulle so who cares about glass coach rumples? And that waterfall ivory and white bouquet! No one else in the world had worn a dress or carried flowers styled like that. It was unique and did the job to stand out in the prestigious St Paul’s location. The dress also reflected the style of that period and her age. Now we’ve seen elements of other royal dresses in the mainstream before and except for Princess Anne and those long medieval sleeves, none had a striking appearance. That being said, Catherine, Princess of Wales was as beautiful but in an elegant and serene way. Her dress wasn’t as dramatic as Diana’s but there was no call for it. Catherine and William were together for years whereas Diana was the beautiful aristocrat who had stolen the heart of Britain’s prince and heir to the throne after a long search for Ms. Right. Oh the romance of it all! That wedding was an event for the ages and would be diminished by something streamlined. She had the budget, build and desire to wear that gown and did so magnificently. I recognize the dress looks like it’s wearing her by today’s standards but fashion is mercurial and those big sleeves are back :-)

A thought about Sarah wanting an extra half hour with a Down's syndrome child. I never dealt with anything like that, but I was working for a bookstore in the late 1980s when a Secret Service detail arrived and explained that George Bush was considering shopping at our store. They went through the place looking for security concerns etc and deciding which members of staff might be acceptable to meet Mr Bush. But in the end, it didn't happen because Mr Bush needed to make a different appointment or whatever it was, and there wouldn't be enough time to browse. And we were disappointed a bit (like him or not, this was a President), but we also understood, because security is a big thing for these people.

Yes, Shauna, I see your point. I've always liked Fergie. I always thought she had a good heart so I excused a lot of her behavior as just being slapdash. But I see now that she was very immature and selfish in her actions. I blame her for that, but I also blame her selfish mother who chose her own happiness over the wellbeing of her daughters and husband. The old fashioned upper class British characterization of being raised by strict nannies doesn't sound so wrong now, when you look at the end result of overindulged children who never grow up. Also, I think the Queen was a good enough Christian that she could accept people as they were, warts and all, and still love the person, and I think she was that way with Sarah. ..,I really miss Queen Elizabeth!!!

I know Charles still does not carry a phone, and that is his choice and comfort zone. Nowadays, I imagine the lesser royals bypass the grey suits for personal family matters, making life less stressful. I get how Sarah would have been chafing under that system. A bureaucracy that huge, conducting your entire life would be hugely aggravating.

In her visit to Canada, while pregnant, I was absolutely horrified by what Diana wore. IMO, SOME of what Sarah said about her style during the early 80's was correct. Yes, yes, big hats, a most unattractive hair style and some bows ( not on the butt, of course) and shapeless maternity wear. However, Diana, as she became more confident in her role, found a style that suited her figure and beautiful face and public personality. I loved her shorter more sleek hairdo, those fabulous suits and outstanding evening wear.

Hi Shauna. Oh my goodness yes! Diana was known for her frills and bows. The Shy Di look and then for several years when married during the mid 80s style. Big time! It took a few years before she gained confidence and learned how to dress more streamlined with the advice of designers recommended to her by the Vogue Editor at the time. There is an old program on youtube where they discuss her fashion and how she matured into a more sleek look. Power dressing. Poor Fergie. Like many of us, the big bows, the polkadots, and frills just did not flatter her. And Princess Diana could wear a burlap sack!
There is one photo I distinctly recall maybe it was Royal Ascot, in the mid 80s where Fergie and Diana were both pictured walking together in bright dresses with a great big bow on their butts! 😁
Thinking back now from 1981 to 1997, we didn’t have Diana for long. Seems like a short time now. But what an impact she had! And somehow Sarah has hung in there. I agree with many other people who know Sarah. She gets herself into trouble. But there’s just something about likeable about her. As long as you’re not staff, I guess! ha ha

Maybe it’s time for a review of how they integrate new spouses into the family. The only one who was successfully integrated was Catherine and she had a very lengthy courtship which must have given her time to get used to how things work. Diana, Fergie and certainly Megain all rebelled to the cost of everyone. Now Catherine was the only one with a stable family life. That obviously helped as she knew the world did not revolve around her. Interesting.

There's Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. She remained under the radar and quietly supported the late Queen, her husband and raised their children to be humble and not look for entitlements even if they're born royal. Even willing to forego royal titles, just like Princess Anne did with her children. Like all marriages, it's usually not about how the in-laws should adjust to the new couple, it's down to the individual character and commitment of the couple to be integrated. Or at least that's my opinion.

Also, Prince Phillip's reference to the Mountbatten's endurance of Royal Navy life is funny considering Edwina was having several affairs. His mother may have given him an allowance but there was not the sort of money that Diana had access to (Duchy of Cornwall income) to give her that lifestyle. The Queen Mother was as bad, when she died she had something like a £4M overdraft at Coutts which the queen paid off.

Diana's style/fashion sense evolved over time... Her wedding dress was all ruffles and frills. But Diana was lucky because she was tall, slim, and had loads of money of her own (beyond what the Prince of Wales had). But sadly Diana was not a "healthy" woman. Sarah thought she should live like an aristocrat from a bygone era, but she lived like a lottery winner. After leaving the RF Sarah appeared on a daytime television programme, and turned up with an entourage of 11 people who all needed lunch - not the standard sandwich, fruit, non-alcoholic beverages and a cookie type of lunch. Her entourage gained the nickname ‘Fergie’s Flying Circus’.” Sounds like another pair we know of at present!

Deliberate name drops is textbook narc shifting blame of what you don't already know that they're guilty of. When Rachel mentions Fergie greeting her, she had just said that they were discussing why does any of them need to curtsy to his granny. Bla bla bla. My guess is that was setting Fergie up for a potential blame of not showing Rachel the curtsy or praising Fergie for trying to teach her...sucking up. Narcs way of giving people a purpose for their benefits.
