Clever Cowgirl is dealing with 40 below temps in Montana. Both of you use many of the same methods with regards to care in extreme cold. Her horses are like yours, they want to be outside no matter the weather!
Ok, I come from very cold country. Mountain country. We are cattle ranchers. The horses and cows are outside. They grow a winter coat. They are outside with the cows❤❤❤ They have hay, they have water, they are fine.
I'm Canadian, and yes, my mare grows a winter coat, very dense, but it's not long enough to give her wind protection, so she's blanketed all winter. As long as she has enough hay, she's fine.
It's nice to see someone who knows how to take care of the horses during winter.🙂 I live in Norway and we usually have that type of weather or colder 2-3 months in winter. Horses are meant to be outside like you say, and they are doing just fine. If it's extremely cold I put two blankets on. An idea to keep water from freezing: Fill water jugs with 3/4 water and mix with about 3 cups of salt. You can use soda bottles too.(tie them if the horses take them out) They keep the surface moving so it takes much longer before the water freeze. Hope you get warmer weather soon. 😊
Just read this, and thought I would share. I’m sure you know this already. “Some of the best states to own a horse farm in are Kentucky, South Carolina, and Florida. Kentucky is a great place to own a horse property because the climate is generally mild to moderately cool, especially near cities such as Lexington. This fair climate allows equestrian properties “
I'm in Scotland and half the country is closing down tomorrow due to a storm moving in from the West. Winds of 70 - 100 mph are forecast. Schools and many businesses are closed, no public transport at all. Government has advised not to travel if you can avoid it. BUT - it isn't freezing! I'd rather have a day or two of your weather than these awful winds. Thanks for the video Shae, great to see all your herd looking so well - and great to see I'm not the only one who gets a red nose in the cold 😊 ❤ from Scotland ❤
I should put the horses inside at night, but you have also horses like mushu, who has a good coat and many hair, like also the two fillies 😊 There is even snow in north florida❄️☃️
I live in Sweden and nowadays I appreciate windy weather simply because the electric bill will be less expensive. I do not like the cold and the snow. Snow means so much work and it is slippery. I am in love with fogs and mists - the world looks so much more forgiving with no rough edges. Guess I would be happy with the weather in UK 🙂. Cool summer weather and fall season are my favourites.
I don't think that people understand the constant work that goes into owning horses. I love it when you make these kind of videos. P.s. I absolutely love the way your horses greet you when you enter the barn. So adorable ❤❤😊
I caught your comment on how you got a massage from the same person who does your horses. A number of years ago, I was a competitive runner locally and the local massage therapy school recruited a number of us athletes as subjects for a sports massage class they had. The class lasted six weeks and each of us was assigned to a massage therapist who saw us once a week to work on specific muscle groups. The woman who was assigned to work on me specialized in massaging horses. I asked her if it was difficult to work on horses and she said the biggest problem she had was some of them would get so relaxed that they would lean on her with their full weight. 😂🤣😂LOL. I thought you might enjoy that story Shae.🥰
I'm DYING here! 🤣😂🤣 I no longer have any horses, but back in the day, I had a Connemara Pony mare that would threaten to dump over my full wheelbarrow unless I came over to scratch her NOW! Needless to say she had me trained. 🤣😂🤣
Horses evolved during the ice age. As long as you’ve let their winter coat and undercoat grow, they are perfect like able to keep warm as long as they are fed and watered and have a winter break. That’s what they do for themselves in the wild. Only when we clip horses’ winter coats for our own convenience, then they need blankets, indoor stalls, etc.
There are exceptions of course; a couple of the horses I know get blanketed during these more extreme temps due to either less full coats or being a little on the thin side. If you're able to monitor a horse and see that they're not shivering at all, then yes they're well-equipped enough on their own without a blanket 👌
I don't know if anybody else recognized this or if I'm just seeing things, but about 9 minutes into the video where the horses are all standing around the hay barn. If you look up at the clouds it almost looks like angel wings over the horses. It is so cool! With the Sun being down on them I thought it was pretty awesome. Sorry it's so cold. Shay❤
Oh yeah ....😃😇 I see it too !! Exactly 9:00 and even better at 9:04 minutes, and there is the light gleaming down ( the sun is the head, right ? ).... They are well protected.😌✝️🌺💗🙏🏻😇

Here in Canada, we use an ice breaker to break up ice on sidewalks and walkways. It has a long handle and a small rectangular blade on one end. So much easier to break ice, not as heavy or awkward as a shovel, breaks ice easier and quicker. ❤
@ Dorothy, I was on the Lowe’s website looking at other things when your question came up. I searched sidewalk ice scraper and several examples came up. You may not have Lowe’s near you but the website will give you an idea of what you need for your situation. Good luck. 👍🏼

Oh no! You know it's cold when your nose is pinker than your lips! LOL, been there. I lived a total of 24 yrs first in Canada and then Alaska. The good news is this deep freeze is only temporary. Not yearly and won't even last all winter. Regardless, it's not fun! You take such good care of your horses! You go girl! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Directly across the state from you in Southwest Michigan. Three days with subzero temps here as well and my horses didn’t go in the run in shelters one time. Have tried to keep their environment as close to a natural horse environment as possible, in over 20 years have not had a sick horse or colic.
Hi Shae! Thank you for being such a good teacher in showing responsible horse ownership in extremely cold weather. You hit the nail with the hammer spot on! Horses do prefer to be outside. Providing hay 24/ 7 along with a proper feeding schedule and full access to water, keeps a horse healthy and happy in inclement weather. You constantly monitor them, and make sure they are handling the extreme cold well. A true “horse lover” that can also put on a great vlog! Tell Kyle he is appreciated too:) It’s definitely teamwork!
I teach lessons part time and I appreciate hearing you give yourself permission to chill. It’s easy for me to guilt trip myself for not getting more done during the slow season, rather than enjoy the natural break in the hustle.
I live in northeast Minnesota, and our winter temps can be as low as -30 degrees. I always insulated my water tanks. With a stock tank heater, insulated stock tank, and cover about half top of the tank, the water never froze. My horses and cows had luke warm water to drink.
Know it alls have no concept of how these animals survive in the wild. Or how thick their winter coats often grow. You’re more than fine, Shae. These horses are practically spoiled! They lack for nothing. Be confident in that. You’re doing more than right by them!
Am a California woman, if it gets below 40 degrees, it's too darn cold! Have gotten below freezing last few nights here in Northern California . Love Shae and all the horses, especially Mushu , Ezzy & Ariel ❤
When I had my horses all I had was a lean to in their pasture. There was a barn I could use if I absolutely needed it. I respect you so much for taking such great care of your horses, dog, pig and cat. Thank you for always explaining why you do what you do, even though you don’t need to justify your actions. Stay warm Shae and Kyle!! I had a pipe burst last night. I’m not a fan of winter at all.
Shae, I could tell your hands were getting cold. I can't handle cold weather with my hands for more than 10 minutes. My husband gave me some heated gloves. Now I can through all more chores without a struggle. I highly recommend.
Cold weather is a lot of work. I am working my tail off with my outdoor animals. Having water available is a pain but so necessary. You & Kyle are awesome. Changing subject, I loved what you were saying on FB re motivation & discipline. You are wise beyond your years & so fortunate to have such a good mind & character. Spring is coming. 😊 L
If you cut-to-fit a piece of 2" insulating foam board, so that it covers half of the water troughs, it will keep much of the heat in. Foam board just floats on top of water.
I get the same weather as you, and the last couple of days have been brutal! I have a friend, who's lucky enough to have her farm on a natural gas well, so all of her buildings are heated for free. Now that's luxury!
Here in Germany we had 4 month of heavy rain. We would have appreciated the cold. We had water inside the barn. The pasture turned into moor. The horses were suffering of "wet eczema" on their legs. I have been around horses for more than 40 years..that was the worst case ever. Now it is cold dry & a bit chilly ..the horses are in good shape. As you say: tons of hay a shelter & may be a blanket. Your horses will be greatfull 🤠
Love how you take such amazing care of your babies. It is hard work and you do it all with a smile. They all know that they are loved and don’t have to worry. That is why they are so happy and carefree. ❤
I don't have horses but having any outdoor animal is just the pits right now. I relocated my rabbits to the basement where it's warmer, not as warm as the house but rabbits can take it pretty cold but it's due to their water not freezing. This weather is just way too cold. We are in Southern VA, we aren't used to this frostbite weather
I live in the Tampa FL area and we didn't have any risk of snow but it has been very cold for here. And rainy so it's damp and cold and gray. I grew up in the Midwest but haven't lived there for decades. So, low 40s feels VERY cold to me now!
The heat not only keeps the water from freezing, it warms the horses when they drink it. In Russia where it's cold in winter, they have a custom of drinking heated water in winter to stay warm.
Feel for you! In my later 50’s, I got out of Minnesota in winter time more and more, now spend 6 months in Arizona and 6 months in Minnesota! BEST of two worlds! Stay warm as possible❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing and loving on your animals!! Still work in nursing, even at pushing 70…..so there is always something to do! Appreciate your videos!
You look so pretty in pink... Especially with your pearly pony pink lipstick! You take such wonderful care of all your horses... What a busy day you had in such cold weather!
When I was younger my family had a nice cozy barn with stalls that our horses could go in when they wanted too. They did use them some but mostly they choose to stay out in all weather. My three I have right now have a similar choice here, but they choose to stay outside most of the time.
I grew up with horses in Alberta. They stayed out all winter with food and water. Their shelter was wind breaks or trees. They did fine, never died or even got frozen ears.
Hang in there Shae, summer is coming! I don’t like the cold either! It’s cold everywhere in the US! I’m in Kansas and school has been canceled because of the bitter cold so I can only imagine how cold it is there! COME ON SUMMER! I still love Ariel! She’s my favorite!
Hey! thank you so much for doing this ! If you want horses you need to know about the winter ..and we know .. but even when you know you still have to go day by day horse by horse !❤😁🦋 And I am SOooo ready for warmer weather ..you know above 50° LoL 🎉 And a quick tip for troughs An empty gallon jug( milk) about a cup of table salt ( regular uniodized) fill with water and hot glue the top on after screwing it on ! Float and helps keep a hole open to drink from ..yes even with the heater . Safety first and watch YOUR time out side too !
My horses love coming into their bedded cushy stalls at night with their heated water buckets and free choice hay to munch on. They also get a nice warm mash. When I go and get them out of the field at night, they are waiting at the gate for me, anxious to get in out of the cold. My neighbor does the same thing. Our horses seem more relaxed inside at night but outside during the day. I think there are many different views on taking care of horses in cold weather. Each horse owner has to do what they feel is best for their animals. Keeping them out of wind chill and a dry bed to sleep on inside or out is important. Horses can adapt but can also get frostbite so they need protection from wind chill especially. These winters seem to be getting more brutal lately. Not fun and a lot of work.
Oh how I miss being greeted by my horses when I’d open the barn door to feed. Frozen buckets are the worst!!! I’ve had buckets crack when trying to remove the ice. Uugghh! I would carry 4 milk jugs filled with hot water to the barn. I used bale twine, tied up the jugs and carried them around my neck. Oh to be young and strong again. You’re doing a great job caring for the horse. They appreciate you!❤❤
As far as the cold goes I live in Florida and the entire Panhandle had three to five inches of snow since 1989 and before that it was 1960. So it certainly have understanding about cold
When you were stood at the gate with Ariel I thought what a huge difference you’ve made to her in confidence, demeanour etc, and then you said look how she’s come on from when you got her 😁. Belle and her friends at the end ❤
Like she was saying, Mom, why is it so cold out? My cats in Arizona won't even go out on my patio for long till it reaches 70 degrees. Only for a minute, then they run back in.
Pretty in pink. I don’t usually like using pink. But, if you’re going to use pink, do it well. You do it well. And…. Nice to see the horses well cared for in this cold weather.
Such an informative video , thank you for always sharing your knowledge and teaching others, you are a true asset to the horse community and to You tube oh and thank you for showing beautiful Belle at the end 😊❤
Ariel seemed to me to come out of her shell when Belle was moved to wean Essie. Then she wasn’t pushed away from you. Now that’s she’s older, hopefully when you get a larger property and Belle gets to come home to the herd, Ariel will be okay. Thank you for sharing your Arctic Blast routine, very interesting!❤❤❤
Becky here. I love summer as well. I live in TN. The humidity can be brutal here but I will still take that over the 8 degrees and 10 degrees I woke up to the last couple of days. My honey and I need some wind therapy on the Harley that is sitting in the garage all cold and lonely. No one hates winter more than bikers, boaters, and horse people. 😃
Wow, I am from the UK and yours is too cold even for a Scottish woman. I use a sledge hammer for my water backets, so much fun. Everyone knows their horses, and it makes me laugh when people judge and give opinions these days. Horses are amazing when controlling their body temperature. You are doing a great job, you know who to rug and not. People are to quick to rug a horse, not realizing horses can't cool themselves down. I love how you explain and go through your decisions on why, I hope people learn and take a step back before judging. Every horse is unique. Good luck with your winter, spring is just around the corner 😘
"That's not too bad!" she says, while she's looking like a popsicle! Brrrrr!!!! What can I say... I love living in California! (Although we have other challenges here.) Your horses look very well and I enjoy seeing how you take care of them. Good job!
I remember I would break up the ice in the troughs with an axe. I am a July baby and don’t like the cold either. You’re very attentive to the horses needs. ❤
I long for spring. Warm enough and no biting insects. It's good to see that you take care of yourself as well. January really feels exceptionally long.
Summer person here too! Got the privilege to go to Maui in early December for our daughter and son in law 's wedding on the beach. I was in total heaven.Temps remained at around high 80's to low 90's. And in the 60's at night. That was the first time ever there and I definitely will go back again when the cold seasons return. Beautiful, safe, clean, American, fun with lots of bird's and flowers. A bit pricey but worth it! It broke up the winter blahs. Hang in there, we know it won't last even though it feels like it.
Great Video, Showing that running a horse farm is not just "all fun". It is a lifestyle choice and many days can be really crappy. Hope the weather gets real better soon
True enough, the weather has been brutal here too… near Niagara Falls Canada! I’m taking extra care with my two dogs…only letting them out under careful watch, and feeling their paws after going out. Warm water to take ice off their paws. They are pampered, but still! I’m glad you’re taking extra care with your herd and explaining how you manage during this extreme weather. God bless you & Kyle.

Kola is built for that environment. I imagine she is loving it. All of you stay safe and happy. ❤😊❤😊❤😊
I think Koa’s scarf probably isn’t necessary, Shae puts it on him for decoration. He’s a husky mix and they’re made for cold weather. ⛄️
I in FL and we got almost 8 inches in the Panhandle. It snowed all the way down to the beaches! Lows in the teens. Crazy stuff lol
Have you ever seen anything like it?.
Great question.
We are in the Florida panhandle too! I just posted a video. It was crazy!!
I live in the Tampa FL area and we didn't have any risk of snow but it has been very cold for here. And rainy so it's damp and cold and gray. I grew up in the Midwest but haven't lived there for decades. So, low 40s feels VERY cold to me now!
@@sBaum Yes but not in Florida lol.
The heat not only keeps the water from freezing, it warms the horses when they drink it. In Russia where it's cold in winter, they have a custom of drinking heated water in winter to stay warm.
Don’t scare us like that! Happy all is okay. Love you and your herd! Kyle too! Lol
Only 57 Days left till Spring, I am crossing out each Day on the Calendar for the Countdown 😂❤
Hahaha!
Me too. I start Nov 1 every year.
You look so pretty in pink... Especially with your pearly pony pink lipstick! You take such wonderful care of all your horses... What a busy day you had in such cold weather!
Love Mushus cuteness ❤❤
I love Ariel! She is 23:41 special ! Love Essy too. All your horses are the best! I have watched you for three years! Love you all
When I was younger my family had a nice cozy barn with stalls that our horses could go in when they wanted too.
There’s even been heavy snowfall in Florida of all places. Hope it eases up soon for you all. ❤
Horses grow a lovely purpose-built coat for cold weather.
Hey! thank you so much for doing this ! If you want horses you need to know about the winter ..and we know .. but even when you know you still have to go day by day horse by horse !❤😁🦋
And I am SOooo ready for warmer weather ..you know above 50° LoL 🎉
And a quick tip for troughs
An empty gallon jug( milk) about a cup of table salt ( regular uniodized) fill with water and hot glue the top on after screwing it on ! Float and helps keep a hole open to drink from ..yes even with the heater . Safety first and watch YOUR time out side too !
Love your coats. The high heat retaining collar & super furry hood. It’s lovely that although you work so hard but you do it in so much style💖🇬🇧
I love that too ❤❤❤ she always coordinates her barn outfits and colors .. I love all of her lipsticks ❤
So cute at the end with Ariel she looks so good 😊
My horses love coming into their bedded cushy stalls at night with their heated water buckets and free choice hay to munch on.
They appreciate you!❤❤
We are going through the same arctic cold and wind. It’s hard to get motivated when it’s that cold. But you do what you do for ur animals safety
Shae you take such good care of your Horses 🐴 You think of what is best for each Horse 🐴 They Love you so much ❤
As far as the cold goes I live in Florida and the entire Panhandle had three to five inches of snow since 1989 and before that it was 1960.
This cold is crazy. Stay warm!
You take better care of your horses than anyone I’ve ever observed! You are a great mama!
Thanks for showing precious, precious Belle there at the end.
What a Great baby blue coat with the cozy fuzzy hood. You are prepared for that cold in top style .you and that Mushu. What a fluffy thick coat.
That greeting nicker is what makes it all worthwhile!❤
Lightning and Arielle are in LOVE ❤
Arielle has always been bold and connecting with the males 🙂
As long as they are digesting food, they are staying warm! Keeping the water from icing over is fun.
I hate being cold! I get the shivers and can't stop! I live in North Queensland, Australia. I love it!
Love your parka!! The powder blue looks great on you!!! Take care of yourselves!!! ❤😊
The horses look so different with their Winter coats ❤.
They are all looked after beautifully ❤
In Pennsylvania it's so dang cold ❄️🥶❄️🥶 my dogs look at me and say No!
Wow! Look at Belle's dapples😊
Loving that rainbow blanket on the horse❤❤
Bagheera looks good in her multi colored blanket. 👍🏼
Yes we know which one she is 😅
"That's not too bad!" she says, while she's looking like a popsicle! Brrrrr!!!! What can I say... I love living in California! (Although we have other challenges here.) Your horses look very well and I enjoy seeing how you take care of them. Good job!
Love your compassion for your animals! All of them! (that blue looks good on you)
I remember I would break up the ice in the troughs with an axe. I am a July baby and don’t like the cold either. You’re very attentive to the horses needs. ❤
Beautiful sunrise. Your farm looks so pretty 😍
Agreed
Thank you!
I long for spring. Warm enough and no biting insects. It's good to see that you take care of yourself as well. January really feels exceptionally long.
There you all are Dear !! I used to watch you for my Panic Attack mode..😅 You and your Horses and wonderful for that.
So COLD ❄️...
STAY SAFE 🙏🏼
It sounds like you like the cold weather. ❤️
Summers my favourite season and it's good for us Leo's ♌️ , our ruling planet is afer all the sun...Mushu looks majestic in the thumbnail shot...it's been a beautiful sunny Winters day in my hometown down South in the U.K, i even took my coat off as i sat gazing blissfully out to sea on my seafront....Keep warm and well...🐎✨️
"A Bougie Piggy Princess" You crack me up! 😂🐖 You do 10x the work of most. You absolutely deserve a "chill".
I received my Free Spirit hat - it is so soft and warm! I’m in Michigan also, so need something to keep warm during these low temps - and that hat does it for me, AND looks pretty! Thank you for quality products, Shae!
Spring, Summer & FALL are my most favorite times of the year!!!
Brrr! It looks like everyone weathered the cold temperatures just fine! ❤
you above anyone else know what those “ beauties” need ❣️thanks for sharing what it takes to keep safe & sound ❣️🥶🧤
You and Kyle are professional, knowledgeable and dedicated to the herd. I am sorry that some think that they know better than you. The FSE herd is Shae's priority. She works constantly to ensure their health and well being. 🐎🐕🐖❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing the work that’s going on at super cold days, very interesting! Your horses are in best hands ❤
Heat wave coming then another freeze here NW Illinois. Was -32 wind chill on 😢😢Tuesday… 18 degrees now wind chill 9. Snow on ground only 2 inches. Your horses look warm and cozy. Reminds of the days I used to manage a barn in winter. Have a safe and Warm day.
Sounds like here in Maine. Below zero, windy, not much snow to bank the house. Stay safe!!!❤
Your videos just make my days better. Thank you ❤😊
That's all I've been doing cracking icebergs in the ponds. I didn't let my Canada Geese out of the barn till noon. Changing de-icers in the troughs. Being on top of food , straw bedding and alfalfa.
Our amazing beautiful beasts ... they know we love them. ❤
