Stevenson was definitely Cuba's version of Muhammad Ali. He just had more humility and didn't boast like Ali did, but the guy looked like he could have been Ali's brother.
You are mistaken on this account. As far as I know Ali was very humble to compare to Stevengon. Stevenson had a tremendous ego and was not always agreeable.
At least you don't ignore Vysotsky. The Cubans are where they are in boxing at least as much because of Soviet sport science (and initially coaching) as they are from their talent and prior pro experience ( not discounting Alcides Sagarra's contributions and his like). But what happen's now that the USSR is gone and Soviet sport science is more or less from what I understand "non-existent". Hopefully the Cubans will run training camps for visitors that for a fee will show JUST THE BASICS. THEN resurrect sport science (if Cuba still has any of the Soviet style infrastructure left or even if they don't).
I remember Vysotsky. He did beat Stevenson but was never considered great. He very well may have, but what I recall reading was the Soviet Union sent other heavyweight fighter to the Olympics because Vysotsky would tend to cut easily. If he's in the Olympics against Stevenson and beats him, totally different trajectory for Stevenson's career.
Frogtown the reason Stevenson won 3 olympics is because he never turned pro while the world was so he was fighting inexperienced little boys of course he won 3 he should have won 10.
Not really, they have been good "amateurs". They fight for many years and have great experience over their much younger rivals. In recent years, may Cuban boxers have defected to the US and very few have won anything.
And look where Usa has come to..Homeless,poorness,run by bankers and enterprizes,no public goods, everything owned by private companies..A hell if you ask me..So the decision of staying to Cuba and have a life with meaning,is the right decision.
So,only if you live in a country, you can tell whats going on there, thats your point here??And by the way,i m not talking to trolls man,so if you re going to blow this up,lay off.
Kos Evagg No, I do think however that if you do not live here, you lack context. You have thrown many accusations. And while some of these have kernels of truth, you have blown them well out of proportion. Hence why I ask where you are from.
The Soviets taught them boxing. They added their own style and flavor (so to speak). More movement but they still came right at you. Not so "bulldogish" as the Soviets.
Afro-Cuban is a major ethnicity in Cuba, they're descendants of the slaves brought over to the Caribbean from Africa. Many of the country's best athletes are Afro-Cuban.
Still going strong Arlen Lopez, Julio Cesar la Cruz, Andy Cruz, Roniel Iglesias, Lazaro Alvarez
cuba has some great fighters. My father said he knew Stevenson, he was a great man
A place where love and recognition are core values.... And hey it works! Great Documentary and yes these guys are the best boxers
Stevenson vs Ali would have been epic!

RESPECT TO THE PEOPLE OF CUBA,they dont sell their souls to devil..RESPECT TO CUBAN PEOPLE from greece
cuba is awesome at boxing, the more competitors the more compotation and the better the average fighter is and there's a lot of competitors there

Respect!
Помню начало 80 х бой Стивенсона с немцем ...
Teoflio Stevenson was great but people forget about
Igor Vysotsky and Yuri Nesterov.
We forgot because he never won three Gold medal ,but he did beat Stevenson twice.
I will give him that.

I agree. From what I understand the Cubans had Angel Milano (sp?) waiting
in case, the Soviets had sent Vysotsky to Munich.

+Mr X los unicos negros que siguen hablando de la esclavitud son los afroamericanos en US. El negro cubano se considera solamente cubano y punto.
