Very active 71 year old man. Gym, trainer, walk, etc. I have bad hip pain in my right hip and an xray has shown arthritis. The pain travels to the groin area and the knee. I can do fine during the day but sleeping is a problem because the pain wakes me up. I am doing physical therapy right now, ( 2nd week) and it is a tad better, but I am making an appointment with an orthopedic doctor next week to determine what can be done. I've never had pain before so this is all new to me. If I need a hip replacement, I am fine with it. I just want the pain to go away. Like your channel doctor. Very informative.

I hope you were able to get your hip replaced by now and all your pain is gone. That worked for me and everyone I know who's had one or two hip replacements.

Since you're active, IF you end up looking into replacement, also look into resurfacing. The first doctors I saw did not even mention it, probably because it's a procedure they didn't do, but it's worth looking into if you're very active.

If you are a side sleeper, try a pillow between your legs and lay on the side that does not hurt. If both sides are painful and inflamed, get used to rolling over with the pillow between your legs. Hopefully you’ve had a resurface or relief by now.

Good Explanation. Xrays revealed that both HIPs are bad but only the left hip is giving me pain, gait etc. I just had left HIP Surgery 10/23/24 and it went very well. Currently recovering.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and that comes with some mean pain, however back in 2013 my right hip only started hurting out of the blue, upon visiting with my doc, he had me get x-rays an my follow up he told me I was when walking, rubbing bone on bone,he called it bursitis and said he anticipated my hip would need replaced, i can NOT tolerate my hips hurting at all. I was given a defective body I think bc I also have narrowing in cervical spine, along with an infusion done years ago that is simply destroyed by arthritis today also herniated disk right above c5-6 which were infused, doc said I basically needed my entire cervical area replaced, said he wouldn't do that to me tho. He said I also was blessed with inheriting my mother's Degenerative disk disease, spinal stenosis, I have the worst pain in S1 & L5-6 wheres there's a fracture that causes me severe pain if I'm on my feet longer than a 3 minute period..... so when I started here recently having Charlie horse cramps in my buttocks that radiates to my hip. I would love to feel better where do I start?

Tammie, you and I have very similar stories. I don't have MS but do have Parkinson's fibro Rheumatoid Arthritis
      Osteoporosis Osteoarthritis Sjogren's Syndrome
I have a fractured ramus pelvic bone that won't heal and need both hips replaced along with cervical stenosis bulging discs and esophageal dysmotility that causes severe chest pain at times.
I'm 59 almost 60 and don't know where to start my surgeries.
Mobility is top priority but I'm afraid of the post op pain and recovery. I had a right knee replacement last Nov and it was the most brutal recovery. That's what makes me so nervous about doing hips!!

I started with the chiropractor then went to an orthopedic surgeon. He said physical therapy isn't going to fix this after xrays and exam. He did send me to physical therapy and I go back at the end of this month. Yup, he was right. I am ready for a hip replacement.

My PT group kind of kicked me out because it got to the point where all the exercises were exacerbating the bone-on bone hip and all the referring pain down to my ankle. 4 weeks after hip replacement surgery everything is going great. Goodbye excruciating pain!

Yes the Xray (free in Australia) is actually the best tool for initial diagnoses. BUT everyone is different and you may have bad damage and still be able to walk ... and vice versa.

I've been an avid walker for the past 44 years. About 2 years ago, I started to feel pain in my groin that got worse. I had tendinopathy that appeared in my upper thigh area, sometimes front, then back, bursa pain, and the worst & most persistent nuisance pain, nerve pain all around my knee on that same leg.
Now, my Orthopedic doc claims my X-ray shows "mild osteoarthritis."
    Wthell.
I don't want to wait until my arthritis "looks" worse on a X-ray before I get surgery!
As you say, pain is very subjective.

I have been having arthritis pain in my hip for quite a while. Saw my ortho guy, he had an x-ray done and came into the exam room and said “let me introduce you to a surgeon.” Said is was shockingly obvious I needed the surgery. We schedule d it right then and there. Surgeon said after the procedure it was one of the worst hip joints he’d seen in years. He used the medical term “it was a mess in there.” Guy did a good job, recovery was excellent and I am pain free, at least around my hip joint, my lower back is another kettle of fish, getting a lumbar CT tomorrow.

Xray of left hip showed mild osteoarthritis, yet i was having great pain and occasionally it felt like my hip was dislocating. Because of the pain, doctor ordered MRI which showed a labrum tear and advanced arthritis and subchondral fracture. Xray did not show all this , but MRI revealed the problem. Had a hip replacement as soon as possible. Right hip started to hurt, but again xray didn't look too bad. However, i had a cam fai, multiple labrum tears, and advanced arthritis in the right hip. Had a second hip replacement. For me, xrays did not reveal anything about my conditions, is that commonplace?

My hip replacement is 11 years old. I have groin pain but the xray shows the replacement to be ok. What could it be? Perhaps the back?
