I remember this very well. I normally support my own countrymen and women in the Netherlands. But I followed skating closely in those days and I was admiring Dan Jensen in those days as also some others (also because his great skill/graciousness in technique). He was one of the best in those days but did not always win. After the former olympics you'd feel for him not winning. Especially because of his past away sister who began speed skating in the first place. It was a story of a hero who had to win regardless of your favorites at the beginning. And... he did! I still get emotional while watching it. Then countries don't matter anymore, only people❤
US Speed skaters were always better known in the Netherlands than in the US. Some like Jansen and Bonnie Blair became somewhat known but, to this day, most in the US don't know about Eric Heiden who won 5 gold medals in the 1980 Olympics, winning all 5 events which nobody else has done. All anyone remembers is the US hockey team winning gold whereas Heiden's feat is the more impressive. I live in Wisconsin where speed skating has been big for a long time. For decades, the only US training facility was here. More were built when short track started to get popular.
Wow! So much to look forward to with skating in the Olympics! Love the Dan Jansen story and would have never known how it could have inspired someone into skating without such a touching bit by the birdman!
That wouldn't have been enough for me. I would be so annoyed by the final result of just one Gold medal, that actually could be a lot. I would just be so angry. All my respect for this man.
92 was the last year they held the winter games the same year as the summer games, after that they started switching between summer and winter every two years like they do today :)
They used the to have the Winter Olympics in the same year as the Summer Olympics, then they changed it. When '94 was the first year of the new schedule.

If they are every 4yrs and he didn't do it in 92... How is it possible in 94 to have an Olympics
