I love my Tranx 300 and my Conquest MD 400. The MD Tune is really a game changer and makes my time on the water less stressful when making bomb cast with swim baits or surface irons. I wish the new Scorpion MD 300 had numbered brake shoes. Makes adjusting a little easier. Overall I think I’m gonna wait until they make a new Tranx.
I'm using my scorpion 300md here in Guatemala for roosterfish 30 to 50 pounds equip with 4onz stickbaits and it's a beast. The only change I did was the power knob I put the heighten 130mm and is really nice and match the red color. The tranx 300 is also really good and more comfortable the power knob.
A little late on Shimano's part. Tatula 300 has more features that swimbait guys find appealing. 110mm handle, a variety of ratios to choose from, neutral color to match any rod, easy adjustments, solid frame, etc. It's the gold standard for reels right out of the box. The Shimano guys will buy it because its not a Daiwa and that's about it.
I kinda have the same opinion. I would buy this MD reel if it were available in lower gear option. I have owned a Tatula 300 and it does what you ask of it. This reel probably will do too, but not offering it in different gearing options is a big mistake. At least for my fishing. Have been getting used to ~32 IPT and now that is what I want in all reels, high gearing but not crazy high gearing like this.
@@OutofluckpikerMJK I prefer ~40 IPT for most of my glides. I really don't see an avenue for improvement on the Tatula 300, it's perfect for the price. A Zillion HD 200 would be an interesting addition to Daiwa's lineup. It would essentially be the IMZ Limit Breaker without the tech. The Zillion HD 1000 is too low capacity for swimbaits and the Tatula 300 is too big for small swimbait rods.
Perfect timing. I just received my MB Orochi XX Leviathan and was looking for a new SB reel for it. I already fish a Scorpion 300 MD, so I'll wait for the updated model. Thanks
I have Tranx 300 and 200 along with a few others for swimbaits. Unless you are throwing baits over 9" you don't need a special reel. And by the way Reel Test, I am the Authority on all things Fishing. LOL . 😂😂 Hope you give those jigs a sling soon.
Finally a 300 reel with SVS Infinity. I do get that infinitely adjustable brakes are more useful for lighter lures, but, i still see a place for it in bigger reels. Very nice feature to just scroll the outside wheel if the wind is picking up or whatever.. This Scorpion 300 MD would definitely be my nect reel, if it wasnt available in only a extremely high XG gearing..
Aldebaran Bfs update? We just got one less than 2 years ago… Ask again in like 2026-2028. What I’d like to see is a new Aldebaran 30. That hasn’t been updated in 7 years after the ”facelift” Mgl-version from 2017. The base model came in 2015 and it desperately needs a refresh.
I have the 21 scorpion 300 MD and love it id like to see a reel comparison and test between the 21 and the 24 im still going to buy the 24 but just curious to see how 3 year progress if upgrade, equal, or the old is better than the new
No, unless you prefer a slower gear ratio. This new Scorpion MD 300 has literally everything the current Tranx 300 has and in addition to that it has a full metal frame and Svs infinity.
@@vieterisikaFIYeah, for me the trouble is the top high gearing. I'm pike fishing, and would love a 300 SVS Infinity reel, but this IPT is just way to high for most of pike baits. Would not work for jerkbaits, certainly not for reel jerking, and I think it is too high even for rod jerking. I hope a 300 normal HG SVS reel is in the near future. Have had a Tatula 300, great reel but it was overkill for my fishing. This would be too, but I'm contemplating getting stiffer rods, some time. Then this imaginary reel would be perfect.
@@OutofluckpikerMJKyeah the gear ratio is a shame. I’m on the same boat with you. I also do pike fishing and prefer slower gear ratios overall. Tranx with 5,8:1 was about perfect. I’d only use this Scorpion Md in like with live sonar to seek fish. Then there wouldn’t be too much issues with vegetation and long periods of cranking. The fast ratio is also somewhat preferable to reel back missed casts fast.
Thats allot of specs for 18 lbs of drag. If its built to battle in big fish i dont think 18lbs is enough? My go to big swim bait rods are running 25lb copoly and 35 lbs drag...
drag pressure is so dependent on so many variables. I bought 3 Aldebaran BFS and all of them had different start up pressure. Shimano usually underrates their drag numbers.
Same parts inside as the Calcutta conquest md 300xglh How is it better than the 23 Calcutta conquest MD 300 XGLH NO WAY$381.72 over a 24 scorpion md 300 xglh $237.12
@ if you want swim bait reels the conquest is way to go. Tranx and md will keep you wanting more. You can find most light use conquest for 300$. I start out with tranx and sold it back and got the conquest md and never look back.
Daiwa Tatula 300 has all metal side plates, and frame, 28lb drag, 115mm handle, outside adjustable breaking, yes Mag Force brakes, for heavy lures, Mag Force Z isn’t for anything over 1oz to 1-1/2oz. It doesn’t say it, but it’s basically a Tatula Elite swimbait reel. Smooth as butter, comes in 5.1:1, 6.1:1, 7.1:1, 8.1:1 gear ratios in Japan, and 6 through 8 in the states. Haven’t used a better swimbait reel out of the box. Especially for the price. They also make it in a 400 size. So, Shimano is a little late to the party, and the small handles and micro gears are not good for a big bait reel. Those gears going to be torn up throwing giant lures and especially fighting anything saltwater game fish.
I have to correct a few things. I have two Tatula 300 and have serviced really many of them and overall they are great reels in many ways, and in some ways better than Tranx 300 platform. But they have some disadvantages unfortunately. Tatula 300 actually only has metal frame and gear sideplate. The front cover and palm sideplate including the spool housing are graphite reinforced polyamide. The palm sideplate doesn’t have the metal spool housing like more expensive Daiwa’s. Why they didn’t do it in a 300 and 400 reel is beyond me. It just needs the metal spool housing for the palm sideplate and they should left the sideplate cover itself non metal, so it doesn’t feel as cold in hand in cold weather. The one big problem is the thumb bar mechanism which is really underbuilt for this size reel and often gets stuck in down position due to flexing. This issue has been since then introduction of Ryoga 2020 and Z2020 for the very same reason and they didn’t fix it in the newer platforms. Just an annoying feature that has no real fix. Ryoga 2020 has some aftermarket really expensive metal mechanisms that fix the issue, but they won’t fit Tatula 300/400, unfortunately. The second very big problem are the bearings which seem to be very poor quality. Tatula only has some regular BB and a few CRBB but the Prorex should have all CRBB. The Tatula 300 pinion bearings can’t take even brackish water at all and even the Prorex with its CRBB isn’t much better either. Daiwa here says both are saltwater compatible. I’ve had replaced sooo many bearings to these and the larger 61701 series pinion bearing in good quality stainless steel from Ezo for example isn’t exactly cheap. Don’t know what is going on with the quality of these specific models and their bearings, but they seem surprisingly bad. I do agree with micro gears maybe not being the best option, but it doesn’t mean they are bad to begin with. I have changed some Tatula 300 gear sets too for going geary in a season or even less. Unfortunately local Daiwa dealer here gives them a ridiculous price tag of nearly 80€ per set and i have to order them from Japan directly because of that, if I can. Don’t get me wrong, I like the reel a lot, I use two of them. But it isn’t a perfect one. Neither was Tranx and neither is this new Scorpion Md, even though it has some improvements over the Tranx it still lacks some features I wished to see in it. I’m still waiting for the dream lowprofile 300/400 reel in modern specs as this Scorpion Md isn’t it yet. And to some who might mention other brands, there is a reason I didn’t mention them until now 😅 (edited typos)
