    Haha on #9. I gave myself swimming lessons as my 50th birthday present. Until then, I could only do a head-out-of-water “freestyle” and barely did 100 metres before I was done my “workout”. It took time and regular practice, but now, 2 years later, I can swim all 4 basic strokes smoothly and even managed to swim a whole mile (1600 metres) last week using all 4 strokes on alternating laps. I’m still a slow swimmer, but I *am* a swimmer!

    • @KeithHiew
      @KeithHiew 5 лет назад +6

      Was trying to teach an 8-year-old who was doing the head-out-of-water dog style paddle and who was convinced he could "swim". Naturally, he didn't want to learn underwater exhaling, or anything else for the matter. Even challenged me by saying even if I could swim "my" way, if a tsunami comes, I'd die anyway.
      This is why sometimes people beat the crap out of kids sometimes.

      Maya Kurup Thank you Maya . So glad to read your comment. I started 2 months ago . Still struggling with technique and breathing. How long it took you to master freestyle? I do times a week 45 minutes 800 meter

    • @mayak.8831
      @mayak.8831 5 лет назад +3

      nada sulaiman, I think it’s going to be different for everybody. In my case, the breathing in freestyle was really the toughest to master. Weirdly, for me, learning the backstroke was what got me totally comfortable in the water, and then I really practiced the freestyle breathing, which, in turn, helped with getting my body in proper horizontal position.
      I think it was almost a year of lessons and two to three times a week practice swimming at least 30minutes at a time before I finally was really comfortable with freestyle breathing. That said, I know others who mastered it in like 3 lessons, so I am definitely not the standard to judge yourself by!
      What really works for me is to focus on only one thing for each swim session. Sometimes, I’ll just work on feeling the way I lengthen my body forward on the glide for each stroke, sometimes, it’s about the hip rotation, and sometimes it’s simply the breathing. Take it easy, try to feel really relaxed in the water, and that really helps get better faster!

      Keith Hiew LOL. Poor kid, and poor you. Sometimes it’s hard to listen to those little twits, isn’t it? I tell you, though, that head out of the water freestyle really built my upper body strength! :P

      Depends on the person, but for me using Polar With pulse band it says I burn 400 to 600 kcal with continuosly wimming at average pulse at ca 130 for 1.5 hours. When breaking up the meters and swimming faster (but still fewer meters in total) I burn between 600 to 900 kcal, my average pulse is then at about 150-160. For me a break in the pool is normally between 10 to 30 sec :)

    I cannot stress #1 enough. I'm a sophomore in high school, and all the time I come up against people who are completely jacked. Meanwhile, I'm 6' 2" and only 145 pounds. Yet while they swim their 50 free in around 25 1/2 seconds, I went 23.56. The difference is not really how much muscle you have, but what kind of muscle. They have a lot of bulk, which is great for pulling water, but It's not very hydrodynamic. Meanwhile, I kind of just knife through the water, since the amount of drag is much less. Think of a bodybuilder trying to push an open umbrella against the wind vs an average person just closing the umbrella and walking into the wind.

    An old miner's myth, weakens your back. I can see where that one is coming from, actually. And, in a miner context, it relates to long soaking baths rather than swimming per se. Keeping that whole thing taut is pretty important. Like I'm pretty sure, after a lot of back pain, two of my vertebrae have fused in some way; whatever, the pain went away but my flexibility is reduced, and I can see how swimming might interfere with that process. Nowadays, I still have a back weakness, but I compensate by doing most of my swimming underwater, with my body in a straight line. Works for me. But then my main stroke is the breast stroke, which is particularly punishing on the back. Working on the crawl; I'm a natural swmmer but unfortunately after primary school there were no swimming lessons, so it's all self taught stuff.

    With #3 and #8, I would guess that there isn't much difference between sweat and pee, but I still never use the pool....
    Extra side note, for those of us who have gone through joint replacement (bi-lateral hips and left knee), water exercise is the best thing you can do to prepare for and recover from this type of surgery. You build up your circulatory and respiratory systems, which is crucial for recovery, and there is zero impact. If all you can do is shallow water exercise, that is much better than sitting on your butt... I got through my rehab in about half the time and half the therapy sessions than most others I talked to...

    Actually we were told to wait 2 hours after we eat was because we could get cramps while swimming that could be dangerous, it was weird being told this for bathing as well. This “myth” was also written in our health textbooks when I was in elementary school. Also it was common for us to get a side cramp, called a “stitch” if we exercised or walked fast or ran immediately after eating, so there’s a good reason for this myth?

      Because it's true to an extent. Having a full stomach means there's more mass jostling around in your core. I always eat light or wait a while to digest before going on runs or working out. This is just anecdotal but get side stitches and worse gas if I eat too much before. Not instantly cramp up and die, exactly, but it's something I keep in mind.

    I currently wear two layers of rash guards and swim leggings, all for drag (and modesty) there are swims where I perform better than I ever did not wearing drag gear. I've not experimented with just the bathing suit to gauge my gains from wearing "clothes" since I started layering a few years back and I don't know if I'll go back to that ever cuz I really like wearing stuff in the water I feel like I'm getting a better workout and getting stronger. Slowly adding to my repertoire in the water and ashore
    Great channel. Thanks
    P. S. I have silicone short fins and they do feel like cheating compared to my stiffer ones that I used to have I think I'm going to get some stiffer ones and alternate.

    With the fact that some microbes like the Nagleria Floweri aka the Brain Eating Amoeba being so small that when seen through "clear and clean" but warm, fresh, and unchlorinated ot inadequately chlorinated water, being almost guaranteed to kill you of it goes up your nose, number 6 is especially true. And since I also own a small Intex pool in my backyard, I make it my topmost duty for it to make sure the water is not only adequately chlorinated but is also properly balanced and stabilized so that the chlorine can be in its best, most effective fighting shape.

I only recently learned after water splashed me that it didn't burn my skin. And I decided to try to dip my arm and nothing. So I decided to take this and learn how to swim, now I don't like leaving the water. But sad cause I feel too fat to learn and too old... But this did help ease my mind.

    Peeing in the pool is actually fine it doesn't harm anything. The chlorine and ph levels in a pool are not gonna be affected by it and pools know how many people are swimming and what generally comes off their bodies during a swim and they adjust the chlorine levels accordingly or they do regular tests and add chlorine if needed if they aren't counting.

    Your #2 point is partially correct/incorrect. Yes, swimming is better than NO exercise. And, yes, it is indeed one of the best exercise - no impact, whole body exercise (I, myself, swim over 12 km every week).
    However, calorie burn per unit time (i.e. Calories/minute) is significantly low for swimming compared to running or cycling with the same perceived effort. What it means: the amount of effort you feel that you are putting (i.e. running out of breath or feeling exhausted or some form of the same) = perceived effort. If your perceived effort is the same, and you run for 30 min versus swim for 30 min, then Calories burned-by-running is way more than swimming.
    If you are a World Record holder long distance triathlete (Ironman), then in 30 min of swimming you will burn about 450 Calories (maximum) (and you will cover more than 2 km in 30 min). Compared to that, a very average 150 lb (68 kg) runner would burn 450 Calories by running in 30 min.
    So, if you cover more than 2 km in 30 min swimming and really suck at running, then this #2 is correct. However, if you are of similar capabilities in both swimming and running, then #2 is False.

    • @chickenslovegrimace

      Rana Saha that’s true if you’re swimming frontcrawl, but if you’re a swimmer you have to do other strokes. And we do butterfly which is the hardest movement in sport so if you’re not doing it competitively running burns more but competitively swimming burns more.
