My local Subaru dealership has replaced my broken wheel studs multiple times (for free), and they have been the one's to over-torque them. I will be doing my own wheel change overs now, haha.
I always remove those goofy wheel locks with an impact so I can put lots of axial force into it as it turns and doesn’t slip out. I thought that was gonna be your problem, glad to see it wasn’t haha. Not that dramatic over torque is a lot better

The wheel locks I got from Subaru that were on mine snapped. I torqued it to what Aeroflow said to torque it to, and it didn't feel right. Checked the next day and the head of the lug snapped off. Had to hammer a socket to it and it came off. Spacers are on though, and it looks way better.

Hey Kevin, the exact same thing happened to me on my 2023 BRZ. I was trying to install lowering springs and all the regular lugnuts came off fine but I could NOT get the locking nuts off even with a giant breaker bar and extension and destroyed the lugnut key. I ordered another key from Mcgard for $20 and it happened AGAIN! I ended up having to get one of those lug nut removal kits where you hammer on the socket and used a long breaker to finally get them off. What a pain! Like anyone is going to steal stock Subaru 17" wheels. BAN LOCKING LUGNUTS!
Bro literally yesterday my lug nut stud on my brz snapped because the shop torqued them too tight. Had to replace 5 of them😢 It was an ez fix tho…just time consuming.
The last lug nut that’s on the wheel is carrying the entire load of the wheel. You should always remove the lock nut first before you remove the rest of the lug nuts. The reverse is true when you put your wheel back on. The lock nut should be the last one back on. This way the lock nut sees the least load when you that it off and put back on. On your WRX, torque all the lug nuts back on the wheel to spec. Then try your impact drill to remove the lock nut first.
That is not correct the lugnuts do not bare the full weight of the wheel or vehicle. The center bore does. Pay attention next time you put on a wheel u usually have to push it that last little bit over the lip on the hub before the wheel is flush. Also on several other wheels he only took one other lug nut off so even if your statement where true it would still not apply.
This is also why selecting aftermarket wheels is so critical. Just because the bolt pattern matches and backspacing will clear does not mean that wheel will fit correctly. Luckily most manufacturers use similar centerbore specs on similar bolt patterns.
I literally stood on the torque wrench to get my buddy's WRX security lugs off Studs were fine, but the security lugs were not reusable. Get new lug nuts regardless after you remove them.

I didn't use a torque wrench... it's an extendable ratchet 🤦♂️ did you not see how easily the other lug nuts came off? You shouldn't need tons of leverage to break it loos. It's only supposed to be ~90ftlbs.

wow, i have the same exact problem with my wrx, I wanted to changed the wheels and they so over torqued I was afraid i was going to break it. I need to take it to the dealership.
Literally went through this recently. My GR86 had one lug nut that was either too tight or the dealer cross threaded my stud when they did a tire rotation. Luckily my friend replaced my stud for me, but I think I’ll be getting better studs down the line.
I was gonna say, my BRZ broke 3 studs. Spoke to the chief service mechanic and he admitted to replacing a stud almost every time a vehicle is serviced. Subaru has bad studs. I've rotated my tires hundreds of times over a span of a combined 600K+ miles with Toyotas and Hondas, and Subaru is the only one I've ever experienced this issue with.
Try to block your wheels to stop it from having any movement before using any tool to loosen off the wheel nut. This is the reason why I bought my 2020 Crosstrek, 2019 Trax being brand new with two conditions: "No lock nut installation on delivery". Mind you wheel lock nuts are likely to be installed at the dealer, not from the factory, without knowing how those monkeys at the dealer installed them. Especially when they tested your brand new vehicle which they call it PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection). This was also the second condition in my Bill of Sale: "No test drive and also no gas fill up, as I did not wish my new vehicle driven by any of those monkeys". I had those conditions entered legally in the Bill of Sale when signed and dated.
Lol, I was exactly like that Kevin. Had a boot on due to injury but I couldn’t sit still and recover. I ended up doing car stuff. Hope everything turns out well for you. In terms of the car, I think you chose the best color. The duck bill is a bit too much, but it is a genuinely good looking part. Sorry about the lug nuts. I feel your pain. I had to get mine out by ruining the lug nut. Good luck! Looking forward to the next video.
Have a 22' BRZ and the first time I took off the wheels, I was SUPER careful because I heard all the horror stories about BRZ lugs. They came off ok but holy shit, they were all chalky and dry. I've had them on and off a few times and I've been very careful each time... I could absolutely see how a dealership or shop could fuck these things up.
It’s sad but it’s one of those items you expect to replace when owning a Subaru. I had to do it on our Crosstrek and likely the 86 at some point. Good thing there are aftermarket solutions!
I knew exactly how you felt Kevin when you hit that first locking lug/stud. Had some new-used wheels that I wanted to go test fit on my 17 rex. Went to loosen a lug and stripped a stud. Other three wheels lugs were easy to get off. This was also my first time getting at them since I got the car from the dealer. I always torque my lugs at 90ft/lb and they're just as easy to get off.
The WRX is a great platform to start in as long as you're willing to put in the work to learn what to do and what not to do. It can very easily be a disaster if you're not careful.
So now I should go check mine I guess... under 2k miles. Pray for me. If I find mine are the same it will go to dealer for proper torque. Not even a question. Nearly 40 grand for a car it had better have properly torqued lugs. Glad I came across your vid. Good luck.
I've seen this same problem on other cars. In my case Hondas & Acuras (my soobs have been OK). For whatever reason the locking lug nuts were always like someone torqued the sh!t out of just those and the OEM lugs were fine. Maybe the metal is just different enough so they "stick" more to each other. As others have recommended, get yourself a length of iron pipe for just these occasions. Good for leverage and intruders 🙂I doubt you'll break the stud, might strip out the security key but likely not IMO. Little bit of penetrating oil over night, maybe some heat from a heat gun - worst case. This is why I put a *tiny* dab of anti-sieze on the surface of the lug nuts that contact the rim (not the threads).
Ngl imo that style wing looks a lil too small for that trunk.
I can see where you're coming from! Things being too small is something I'm used to 🤣

I can tell you were bummed but I think you did the smart thing. I would have been too impatient and snapped a stud.
No adhesion promotor needed for duck bill spoiler ?
Kogeki gang 🤙 I’m having some lift on the sides now after what seemed like a perfect install tho. How visible is the gray 3M on your top side? Might just be me over obsessing, but I hate that I’m able to see the tape at certain angles.
wow, i have the same exact problem with my wrx, I wanted to changed the wheels and they so over torqued I was afraid i was going to break it.
@@SHiFTDI3S3LI also broke 3 studs and it was on the same wheel.
@@saulespino2510 mine was on 2 different wheels.
Thanks for the support!
why didnt you get the traditional badass spoiler ??
Yeah, it's scary how the bolts were torqued from the factory. Even on the VA
does the duckbill block your 3rd brake light?
Is the 23 Brz duck bill installed the same way just tape?
No, the oem one is bolted in place.
Did Aeroflow's STi wing on the wife's VB and the paint match was great. The template kind of sucked but I just whipped my own up real quick for it.
We like the spoilers more but that’s defiantly different!
Good looking ride bro. What's the hp?
Have a 22' BRZ and the first time I took off the wheels, I was SUPER careful because I heard all the horror stories about BRZ lugs. They came off ok but holy shit, they were all chalky and dry. I've had them on and off a few times and I've been very careful each time... I could absolutely see how a dealership or shop could fuck these things up.
This happened to me on my wheel lock key actually broke the locking lug nut. Fun times for sure.
Thats exactly what happened to me taking the wheels off my 86 to change the pads :)
Time to invest on impact gun 😅
Great job on the wing, but don't hurt your back with those lugnuts.
The vb has a lot of sharp lines. I don’t think the duckbill flows well with it.
Subaru Antelope Valley! Let's go!
It’s sad but it’s one of those items you expect to replace when owning a Subaru. I had to do it on our Crosstrek and likely the 86 at some point. Good thing there are aftermarket solutions!
Next 3rd brake light 💢💪 let’s Go Kevin
I knew exactly how you felt Kevin when you hit that first locking lug/stud. Had some new-used wheels that I wanted to go test fit on my 17 rex. Went to loosen a lug and stripped a stud. Other three wheels lugs were easy to get off. This was also my first time getting at them since I got the car from the dealer. I always torque my lugs at 90ft/lb and they're just as easy to get off.
Same problem. They overtorqued my wheel lock and I stripped the key 😅
I always re torque my lugs after visiting the dealer for my free oil change and tire rotation because I know they using air tools cause they are lazy.
at least the wheel anti-theft works which is a plus
🤣🤣🤣
Yep factory wheel locks are always too tight. They are the same on my 2020 wrx.
How many people here saw the title and thought he'd blown a head gasket?
Just me?😂
No please God no! 😅
I was thinking of getting the new wrx is it a good platform to get started in ?
The WRX is a great platform to start in as long as you're willing to put in the work to learn what to do and what not to do. It can very easily be a disaster if you're not careful.
It's a subie so it's good. Its all user error that get these Cars a bad name.
Hmm may I suggest your probably not gonna like this but take a impact gun to them just to the wheel locks to see if you can break them free that way
I'll give it a go
the taillights of the wrx look similar to them of the gr86 or am i wrong
You should have warranty? Take advantage of it.
Literally, THE reason I don't go to mechanics or dealers is because they over torque and strip bolts.
So now I should go check mine I guess... under 2k miles. Pray for me. If I find mine are the same it will go to dealer for proper torque. Not even a question. Nearly 40 grand for a car it had better have properly torqued lugs. Glad I came across your vid. Good luck.
They were fine
Glad to hear they were good!
Kevin, get an impact tool, like a bigger Milwaukie for example, they help with situations like this.
I have an impact 😅 I just like using hand tools
Wing alittle to small if the duck bill was alittle linger it would look perfect it on brz
