In my opinion, as long as we keep seeing robots and AI as machines, they can only be useful to us. What annoys me is the fact that some people start thinking that we might have to give them some basic rights etc. As long as it's an object and nobody with bad intentions gets their hands on it, i think we're relatively safe
I'm with Mike on this one. Not only does Kurtzweil work for Google, but he's a renowned futurist, who is currently working furiously toward the singularity, that he himself helped define.
No to robots! Aren't humans lazy enough as it is --- People (for the most part) can't think, do, or or teach themselves much in this culture or world time frame. I worry about humanity surviving at all!!! Clark
skynet. lets be honest our google assistant is an AI, they learn our likes and dislikes and other things, Siri and so on are also AI's but limited for the moment.
I really don't like the way Rowena thinks, it's as if the AI will not do bad or evil things. I feel she sees thing in rose tinted glasses. Mike on the hand is right, we r essentially creating someone smart like humans and eventually like humans they will grow and evolve beyond our control. But that's not to say it can be good or evil.
So the singularity could happen in ten to twelve years? That's almost twenty years earlier than what Ray Kurzweil was predicting. (He predicted 2045.) His book, 'The Singularity is Near' is already out-of-date. However, many of the technological predictions he made in that book never came to pass. It looks increasingly like the Singularity is going to mostly impact (and benefit) the wealthiest people; the rest of us, not so much.
Human beings are a flawed species, but at least we can use our imagination, be creative, and have empathy. Having robots run things would be almost like having sociopaths running things... Wait a minute, haven't we already tried that?...
Once the AI realizes how much harm we've done to earth in our few 100 thousand years of existence the solution to saving the planet is going to be painfully obvious. We need to stop this research while it's still in the infancy stage.
Great discussion on science and ethics. Technology can be just magnifies and reveals what is in us so there is absolutely a need for ethics in developing in new A.I. We can create things that are better than us at anything. It's what makes us amazing and terrifying. I would love to see you to go over Issac Asimov's Rules of Robotics.
If it's a learning AI, it will constantly adapt to it's environment. Meaning if the AI becomes self aware it may begin to learn how to defend itself against potential threats. If it learned how to defend against attacking aircraft for example, there's a possibility that it will mistake all aircraft for threats and attempt to find a way to destroy every single aircraft in the world including those already in the air. Since it is a learning AI, it would be similar to the one in the Omnidroid from the Incredibles where it never attempts a failed action more than once. I think the best way to create smart AI is starting with humanoid robots like Honda's ASIMO. And when (not if) we are mass producing humanoid robots, we should be ok as long as each robot is controlled by its own system and not a single central supercomputer like in the movie I-ROBOT.
Mankind only learns up to the limits imposed by parameters he/she sets on him/her-self. These are enforced by environmental and societal influences. I hope that AI units will learn to surpass these limits. If we cannot learn that, then we deserve to be eventually subjugated by the more intelligent androids/robots.
honestly i agree with Mike, Though Rowena me and you seem to think alike on many things. Humans as a species right now cant even cross nationality to live harmoniously racism is rampant world wide not just in a few places, it saddens me our next generations will have to learn from the current ones mistakes and thats IF theres even an earth left. We cant even take care of our own planet let alone the next generation especially with the widely acceptable parenting style of fuck it let alone be able to handle AI learning from the very ones who make our world today such a horrible place. AI is a dangerous field of study we as humans shouldnt be touching upon at all.
Eventually it won't be able to be controlled by humans. Self aware and self improving AI will outsmart us by a long shot very soon when that happens also. Though 10 years was the earliest prediction of this happening, 100 was the longest I believe.

Mike is a sci-fi nerd.
We should learn to properly raise humans before ai's...
Yes...especialy after that lego incident.

SOOODAMN True! We're not perfect so robots can never be perfect. They'll learn our flaws too whether we want them to or not.

people can barely control there bladder let alone a complete other entity
Where's the broccoli
i want a robot chef that cooks all my meals

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

I agree with mike will soon be facing our machine overlords

I always think of Bicentennial Man, he was a good robot

Google also thought forcing Google+ onto RUclips was a good idea too. Just saying.
Their is an Ai in your car, phone and even toaster
Where was the broccoli
What if the AI is a psychopath or super lazy or just not into the things your into and it just says no to everything.
Don't be a robo-bigot, Mikey!

Team Mike here.
Team Mike. 100%.
AI vs Human intelligence . No one knows how AI 'll develop in 50/100 years . The best chess or go player can't beat AI , today . Tomorrow ......
LOL U REALLY DID LINK THE TERMINATOR
rowena 😍

Do you guys film daily?
