YES, RESULT!! Followed these directions, and now have the LCD back and working on my beloved 26 year old XP-50! BTW, I am one of the owners that has 2 black leads (pins 1 and 2) instead of a red lead in pin 1, but this fix still worked. So happy right now 😍😎😍.
hello I'm Mario I'm from Brazil I used the translator to see your tip and it was really worth it. my congratulations friend, very good your video, it helped me to solve my problem, I sincerely thank you for sharing this information. I'm already subscribed to your channel, hugs!
Man, you are a genius! I just fixed my XP-50. The hardest part was to strip those tiny wires, other than that, it took me about 10 minutes. Thanks again, God bless you for sharing your knowledge!!!
This fixed my XP-50 LCD. Thanks very much for sharing!!! 🎉 🙏🏻 🎁 A Side Note: There is another fix for a dead LCD posted on the Web which I tried. It involves replacing five SMD capacitors on the Main Board. Some of the other SMD capacitors on my XP-50 were leaking so I replaced all 27 (Yipes!!!). After doing that capacitor repair, it did not fix my LCD screen issue... but I'm glad to say that your fix works great.
How do you know they were leaking? If they were not the culprit afterall? Did your keyboard completely crash when the screen went like that or you could play the default preset when booting? I experienced crass in the middle of a song and it stopped playing when the screen went blank. I wonder if it's the capacitors or the LCD thing. The LCD should not affect the sounds I suppose...? The keyboard had been unused for a long time and when I turned the power on it first give some noisy and cracky sounds from the headphones, but soon it went away. Until playing around with it like 10 minutes it broke and went mute with this blank screen.
@@seafarer7954 - I could tell because of the dark gooey residue underneath the capacitors on the PCB. It was dissolving the epoxy trace layers on the PCB. No sounds would play and no text was shown on the LCD... the same as shown in manufacturedsoul's video 🦙
It works !!! Thank you so much !!
I can't thank you enough for posting this! You saved me from having to get a new keyboard and more importantly from losing all the songs I've saved on my 3.5 floppies :) Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds promising ! I have this problem and this weekend I'm gonna try your fix, will let you know if it worked. Anyway, thanks for taking the effort putting together this video trying to help us out, that's so kind of you.
That is the problem with my XP 50! The screen went out probably 4 years ago and I haven't fixed it yet. But after watching the video, i will fix it myself! Thanks so much. This was my very first synth and it's been up on a shelf in my music room all this time!
It worked, thanks ! Only strange problem that remains, is that it takes a lot of time to boot, sometimes 15 minutes or more, when it has been turned off for a while. It seems it needs to "warm up" before it can boot. Once "warmed up", it boots normally when I turn it off and on again. Any idea what that could be ?
Was the keyboard mute when the screen went blank like that? I mean could you still play the default preset that was first loaded although you could not see it on the screen? I experienced the device getting completely out of sound(crashing) when the screen went like that in the middle of playing a song and the song stopped playing. Ever since it won't boot normally, but gives that screen you demonstrated. Maybe it's the capacitors? I even tried to take out the battery and put it back but no help.
Hi - like others here, I have black wires going into pins 1 and 2 (no red wire). Will this same fix still work, or is there a different recommended fix for XP-50s with two black wires instead of the red wire? Any guidance/feedback is appreciated.
hi - really clear explanation. I have not got no characters - instead I have got a row of black squares on the top line and then blank on the bottom line - cant get past this point. will this fix solve this problem too? any thoughts welcome.
Thank You so much for the Video. I too had this same problem and now it is fixed. Thanks to You !!! You are a " Roland XP-50 Techno GENIUS !!!! I give you... " TWO THUMBS UP !!!!!
Hiya Did the repair as you suggested and I have 2 black cables on my connector. I cut pin 3 and connected to pin 1 but Ive just got a static lit display..Any ideas would be most helpful.. Thank you
Awesome fix. My XP50 is now useable again. However the left most column of pixels aren't working- not a huge problem as I can still read the display- just wondered if that might be something simple to sort too?

Hi, just a question about reapairing an XP 80 with no sound. It looks like an small surface mount small flat resistor burnt (close to a capacitor).. do they can replaced?
brother i was also having roland xp 80 and its display is getting weak is their any procedure to go though and solve this display problem and i also searched for the replacement of display but I dont get any one please help me
Sumit Music World I also have a dead display on the XP-80. I'm wondering if the procedure from the video would be the same. Did your issue get fixed already?
@@ericz7320 Have you guys checked out the mainboard? If it's the same (or very similar) I would bet it's the same wiring harness and pin layout which would probably mean pin 3 to ground should work on that one, too.
Thanks for the video but mine has two black wires instead of single red wire(pin one and pin two) and then pin three is the first white wire. Which wire should i cut in this case?
Hi, Does anyone know if this will work if the LCD screen is not even showing any orange blank screen? (I know for 100% the LCD screen is working fine because i had another Mainboard to test and it worked fine. SO obviously it's a fault on my Mainboard. I have recapped it but still nothing, Any suggestions?
At first: Thanks, it works! Although I didnt expect it to mean operating on such a microscopical level XD Important: As you all see in the video - afterwards not only the display is finally displaying something, the lights on all the buttons do that as well! So this fix does not only "repair" the display but also restores the functionality of the instrument and menues. Now I only have to fix the damaged user memory and get a new battery. ;)
Works perfectly! Thanks for posting this! I wonder - if one were to split the wire that goes into pin 3 and solder that to the ground cable, would this repair still work and not lock the contrast?
I did this fix and it worked, I now have my screen back; however after playing it for a little while now there is a high pitch squealing noise when I use headphones or plug it into and amp. Does anyone know what can be causing the noise? The keyboard is unplayable at the moment. Hopefully it’s something easy to fix.
Hey Lucbats, I'm not exactly sure why it would take 15 minutes for the synth too boot. That sounds like you could have more than just a screen problem with your synth. It's also possible maybe some of your caps need replaced which is also another common problem with the XP-50. You may want to look into doing a cap replacement as well as this fix.
manufacturedsoul Hello, I have an XP-80 with a dead display. I was wondering if your procedure would work for it as well. If there are any differences, how can I go about getting that information. Thank you
I've done the same, but unfortunately it seems my problem is bigger.. When I power up my Roland, all the red button lamps are turned on, and the screen is still ORANGE. It was the same before I merged pin 3 and ground.. do you have some tips? Thanks for the video!
Thank you for the tutorial, it is helpful and has saved many XP 50s from the dump. If I may ask for some advice. When turning on my XP 50 the screen lights up briefly displays a row of bars on the very top portion for just a second and then everything stays orange as you describe. After opening it up, the CN14 pin head does not have a red wire in pin 1. Instead there are black wires in pins 1 and 2 and the rest are white. Do you have an opinion regarding this. I hate to trash this keyboard as my daughters was just getting interested in using it to rehearse some of her piano and improvisation songs. Thanks!
Result! Just wanted to close out by saying I implemented the fix in this video, and it worked! (even with two black leads instead of the red one). So happy to have my XP-50 fully operational again!
yo tengo el mismo problema con un teclado igual pero como tu tutorial esta en ingles no lo entiendo. no podias hacer un tutorial detallando mas con las manos para las personas q no hablamos el ingles. gracias
This is a great fix. Reviewing the schematic for the LCD contrast circuit, the root cause of this problem is likely bad capacitors. IC17 (chip) sends voltage to the LCD contrast pin 3. This chip is near the backup battery. Near IC17 should be two capacitors: C63 and C83. From a thread on this topic (search for roland clan 50CVR1) these capacitors leak and go bad. They are 1 uF (microfarad) 50 volt surface mount type, but can be replaced with an equivalent value. Once replaced, you may need to perform a factory reset.
would this fix work for any type of keyboard led screen? I have an m-audio VENOM on the fritz, and I can't get any help from anyone so I want to attempt to repair it myself.
Rob Gomez Most LCD have a pin for contrast adjustment, so it should be possible. So long as the backlight is good and bright. Typically the LCD contrast runs from 0 to 5 volts. For this repair he is setting to 0 volts (ground). But in your case, it may need a slightly higher voltage. Too much contrast will make all pixels dark and unreadable. A potentiometer wired between +5 volts and ground with the pot wiper wired to the contrast pin should allow manual adjustment.
