Roger Moore's era is the only time when you get every type of style Bond from Serious/low key FYEO to overblown spectacle Moonraker and shows what an underrated actor Roger was

It's a good argument and he does have range if the viewer is willing to look for it. I view it slightly differently in that I wish Moore had leaned into the badass _For Your Eyes Only_ mode Bond a little more than his default lightweight setting. I guess what it comes down to is Moore's take was one of irreverence - he never really believed he should be an action hero and so he undermines the proceedings, which then resulted in a feedback loop of the writers tailoring the script to his more eyebrow-raising tone. Ultimately I do want my Bond actor to have enough confidence when they're on set that they can play a cold blooded killer.

For Your Eyes Only is a down to earth serious movie, your right! But Octopussy also often gets overlooked. Because it may have gags but plotwise its also a dark and realistic spy thriller! The entire train sequence is nail biting! The race against the clock is as serious as Bond possibly ever gets! I mean he hears the explanation and knows he has 4 hours to get the nuke. He is then spotted by henchmen and is slowed down and fights them over a long period of time. Then he has to get all the way to the base, plus he has to figure out how to get there! Some people pick him up, but only drive him to the payphone. Then he has no choice but to steal a woman’s car in order to get there! He is slowed down by police who dont believe him, he is so serious that he has no choice but to wear a clown costume. Only like this he can have cover. He has to warn the base commander general about the nuke who also doesnt believe him at first and then he‘s there and Octopussy promptly decides to shoot open the lock, which can also end terribly... Then Bond finally gets the nuke. I have a hard time finding a scene in which Bond ever gets more serious than here and people laugh at it all the time because they are too lazy to properly look at it.. shame..

I love the cast of characters, I love the cinematography, the locations, the colorfulness of the film, the plot and most most importantly I love Rogers performance as Bond etc... in my opinion this is a perfect film. Two of my favourites are The Man With A Golden Gun and Live And Let Die. For me, The Man With A Golden Gun is a very underrated Bond movie. I love the setting in Asia, and the island scenes are beautiful. Also, Christopher Lee is a very good and suave villain, and Herve Villechaize, although short, is both menacing and an interesting character, who even shows some humour. Bond escaping a fight with an experienced karate fighter and then pushed back to be defended by two young schoolgirls is really amusing. The fact that the main villain is an experienced assassin who never misses is intriguing, and also the return of JW gives it a comic touch. I even like the soundtrack and theme song, and the final scene sailing away on a Chinese style boat (junk) is very exotic. Although I prefer the Sean Connery movies in general, Dr No being one of my all time favourite movies, I really do love The Man With The Golden Gun, as well as Live And Let Die. I also like View To A Kill, mainly for the villains, Christopher Walken and Grace Jones, and also the setting in San Francisco. Everyone has their own personal taste, and people's choices and reasons for that choice should always be respected. It was really interesting to see your list and to hear why you ranked them in that order. Thank you.

I've always loved the 'clown Bond' scene in Octopussy, it's so frustrating that it's usually pointed to as a 'jump the shark' moment, I feel as though the criticism comes from people viewing the scene out of context. A clown frantically trying to warn a big top full of customers that they're in danger is practically Hitchcockian. It's great.

    • @magnusprime962
      @magnusprime962 3 года назад +7

It’s so frustrating because even people who have seen the film act like that scene is a joke, when it’s actually being played completely straight. Bond is not a joke in that scene, but with the clown appearance the people who most need to hear his warning are the least inclined to.

    • @christhornycroft3686
      @christhornycroft3686 2 года назад +2

I completely agree. Except for the clown scene and telling a Tiger to sit, it’s a pretty grounded, well paced movie. And Maud Adams is terrific. If you honestly want to see a guy in his 60s bed a 21 year old girl, I don’t know what to tell you. FYEO and Octopussy aged Roger Moore perfectly and put him in a setting where you can easily get into it. It’s not just science fiction that would make George Lucas roll his eyes. They’re movies made for adults, like the novels. Moonraker, AVTAK and DAD are films made for kids.

I think the deal with the Craig films is they try to encompass the beginning of his career as a 00 and then jump to the present, or end if you will, indicated in Skyfall by the reference to the exploding pen, and the Goldfinger modded DB5. WRT the DB5, I find it amusing that they sold off all his stuff, but overlooked the car with all the weapons sitting in a storage unit. And Apparently, somewhere along the way it became his car and not a company car? M's statement, "go ahead, eject me" indicates they are aware of the car, so, guess they just spaced it out... :D

Octopussy was the 1st Bond i saw in the cinema. It was playing along side with Return of the Jedi & Superman III.
In short its a fun movie. Has a bit of everything.
With Moore's movies you'd get little moments of where he's Bond is ruthless. He's line to the twin he throws the knife at. "& thats for 009" is said with real contempt. At that point in the movie the audience isn't thinking about the death of 009. But it shows Bond hasn't forgot he was killed,& He's pissed ! as 009 was one of MI6's own too. Brilliant stuff 👍

    6) Moonraker
    7) The Man With The Golden Gun
I love FYEO and it's in my top 5 of all Bond films. LALD and TSWLM are the next best for me and I really enjoy both (awesome sound tracks in both too!)
Octupussy is right in the middle for me, very solid film but not quite as good as the 3 above it. I like AVTAK, with Zorin being one of my favourite villains in the franchise and May Day is awesome too - sadly Moore's age (and lack of him in any action scenes) really detracts from the quality.
Moonraker is a fun film, it only gets really rubbish to me in the space stuff. I wasn't a fan of them bringing Jaws back and some of the editing/back projections were a bit shoddy, but it's solid on the whole.
TMWTGG is really close to the bottom of my Bond rankings. I found it incredibly boring and it was only redeemed by the presence of Moore and Lee. The script was very much lacking and I can't stand Pepper as a character.

You've made me want to see For Your Eyes Only again. Got all the films but not seen that for a while. I always judge them on how many times I've watched them and how good they make me feel watching them. With that 1. Spy Who Loved Me 2. Moonraker 3. Octopussy 4. Live and Let Die 5. For Your Eyes Only 6. Man With the Golden Gun 7. A View To A Kill. You're so right about that Octopussy but I remember at the time the film came out I wasn't into Johnny Weismullers Tarzans they were showing during school holidays in the UK and that cracked me up when Bond did the Tarzan call - Roger always said lots of actors played Tarzan so there's no reason why they can't do that with Bond. Rogers "sit!" which a lot of people today our outside the UK don't get is that dog trainer called Barbara Woodhouse used to say in her programs. She was a fearsome woman and she only had to go "sit!" and the wildest dogs immediately obeyed. Sit! LOL

This film franchise has been and remains my film guilty pleasure. My first Bond film was Diamonds are Forever. I was 6 y.o. and you can forgive me for thinking that Roger Moore was the star of that film as that was my memory of Bond for the next 6 films. It was and still is a special occasion. The musical theme, opening scene, dry English humour and witty dialogue to start. With that said it is with some excitement that I have discovered this channel just within the last 6 hrs and have been sampling the reviews these last 4 hours. Bond films I think of as its own genre and its hallmarks are an iconic character, a 2 hr. thrill ride of near impossible stunts and larger than life moments. So to use the description "over the top" is required and not derogatory. After all, Ian Fleming's writing, I propose, does shoot for the extraordinary Hero.

Great and (for me) surprising ranking video. Octopussy has always been my guilty pleasure Bond. I remember it didn't get much love from critics at the time. To see true Bond lovers like yourself acknowledge it's pure joy made me smile. I totally agree that without Moore the series would have died. Sir Roger has often been dismissed as a lightweight but like classic actors of the calibre of Cary Grant and David Niven...he made his Bond charming suave and effortless.

I grew-up w/Roger Moore and he was my favorite Bond for a while. Then, Pierce and Daniel came along and changed my mind. Here's my ranking of the Roger Moore films:
    1. Octopussy (9.5/10) Lots of fun, love the Bond girls, the villains and his sidekicks. I even love the theme song.
    2. A View to a kill (8.5) Tanya Roberts is annoying but she doesn't bother me. Roger Moore is noticeably older, but that doesn't bother either. I love Christopher Walken as Zorin, Grace Jones is great as Mayday and Patrick MacNee makes a cameo, which I love as an Avengers fan. Great theme song!
    3. For Your Eyes Only (8/10) I like the location, the Bond girl and Topol. The story, not as much. Good theme song.
    4. The Spy Who Loved Me (7/10) It's got all the right elements but it's one I don't reach for often. The theme song is not my favorite but decent.
    5. Live and Let Die (7/10) I think the script is so silly. But I like the scenes in Harlem, their time in Louisiana is fun, love the boat chase which is the best part of the film, and the theme song is good.
    6. Man with the Golden Gun (6/10) I agree that it's pretty bland. Christopher Lee was the only thing that's remotely interesting about this film. Everyone else, meh!
    7. Moonraker (5/10) It's not awful but it's too silly for me to take seriously and it's not one I reach for either.

I grew up in the era where most hardcore James Bond fans resented Roger Moore as 007 because they thought he was just a light follow up to Sean Connery who never took the role as seriously as they thought he should.
    Boy how times have changed!!
These days every James Bond fan just loves Roger -not only because of his films-but because we know that out of all the actors who have ever played him it’s clear that it is he who truly loved being James Bond more than any of them.
His class and graciousness to the fans over the years only made us appreciate him even more.
His movies were all FUN and remind us of a simpler era with stand alone 007 adventures that came out EVERY TWO YEARS!!
Wow did we take that for granted!
    My take
    1.The Spy Who Loved Me
    2.Octopussy

    3) Octopussy - great action and well paced.
    4) The Man With the Golden Gun - great villain and locales makes up for a lot.
    5) A View to a Kill - bizarre fun, more 80's proof that cocaine is a hell of a drug.
    6) For Your Eyes Only - good action, dull plot, villain and climax.
    7) Live and Let Die - nothing but a chase film with the occasional cringe.

Really love these commentaries, Joseph. Good work! While personal taste factors in to a large extent, your reasoning is as balanced, persuasive, and well-thought out as any professional critic on the Moore films. It's easy to dismiss them as silly and not up to par with the Connery films, but you recognize all the dimensions of them. After seeing your reviews of For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy, I re-watched them recently and I have to agree with you. These films represent the best of the Bond canon. Roger Moore is so smooth and witty, yet he has a strong moral backbone - you can really believe him as a genuine hero.

Joseph, it`s Howard Weber. Back in July 1981, I attended a James Bond luncheon put together by my friend Steve Rubin. Would you believe I met a guy from New York who thought The Spy Who Loved Me was the worst Bond film of the series so far. Go figure. Also, I agree FYEO is a great Bond film but when I saw it back in 1981, I thought Roger`s performance as Bond was more like the Saint. I still feel that way. I`m sure I don`t have to tell you how popular TSWLM was when I saw it back in 1977. Eveybody was talking about it along with Star Wars. Glad that you and I agree on Octopussy.

Hey Joe this was an awesome critic on the roger moore bond movies, i really loved the scenes and discussing, them that really made me think of it, to be honest, roger moore played a huge part in my upbringing without me knowing, first off my dad, grew up with the saint, and then later, persuaders in his teenage years, and then to have bond be the series in which he is awesome in, is just crazy to me, my dad told me about those times, the funny thing was my dad was an usher for the MCT back in the 80s, and he would be behind when screenings would happen, and roger moore would be doing movie premeres back then, and to show my cousin the bond movies, since he never seen it, but only played the games, never seen the movies, so when he told me his favorite was roger moore, i felt that there is a bond for everyone, and what i can say from much thought of roger moore, is how great he was, the comedic bits are so good, and not that many actors can have the comedic bits and then switch to seriousness. Also there is alot in terms of what he brings which is so different from what came before, he wanted to be different and that is what i liked about him. I would love if you can subscribe to my new channel which is a travel channel believe it or not is called thrilling cities, i would like people to see it, i will do filming locations at some point of bond, but i already did some like captain marvel or pineapple express. So just let people know it helps alot, and I really liked this video, thanks for everything you do for the bond community.

I did not mind octopussy but some of the scenes like the dinner out turned me off, & it felt to go off a bit from the Bond formula, but it had one of the best villians imo, that slick Khan or w/e his name was awesome. View to a kill just kind of sucked, also went off the bond formula imo, that ending firetruck and house scene was just bad, first part was ok.

Your Lazenby rankings will be a short video. :). Love your videos, you David, Calvin, Tom, etc have been a blessing this year.
I like LALD, FYEO, Spy. But Octopussy is a surprise top for me. The auction house scene is classic Flemming James Bond. Just Kamal Kans stare at Bond speaks volumes. The backgammon scene is one of my favorite Bond- villian scenes. Bond sliding down the staircase bannister is brilliant James Bond. Magdas spiraling down from the balcony is a beautiful, stunning scene. Orlov is done very well as a " get Russia back to superiority " General. Gabinda is a good, loyal henchman. The cart chase is so cool and refreshing. The pre-title is one of my favorites with: TLD, GE, TWINE, Goldfinger. Moore looks competent fighting in Octopussies room. Q gets some screen time. And 009 dressed as a clown sets up a mystery, all making it a great film.
Orlov's knife throwing henchmen were a good fit. The villians using Octopussy's circus for their smuggling and ultimate goal of setting off the nuclear device on an US base in Germany, the henchmen fit. And when i had wnt to the film then, the scene of 009 running from the knife throwers, made me jump. As i thought it was one guy at first. 009 pauses after balloon pops, and the knife thrower is over his shoulder, way in the background. 009 turns back and right into the thrower.
I do like the score and pre title in AVTAK. And love Bond on the snow mobile ski, playing to the Beach Boys. Burton created snowboarding, and it was in its infancy, and getting going when the film was made. So the snowboarding was pretty well done.
